I don't know if its a cultural thing or what but it seems in terms of anime genres there is drastically different stuff. When I say sex scenes I don't mean hentai I mean closer to sex scenes in movies where its just love making. In anime its so different. For example hentai is just porn with no story, and ecchi/romance anime may have good stories but no sex scenes. Its just stupid, their are so much more perverted stuff that putting a sex scene but covering up most things like real life movies would make the anime better and would actually be less perverted. It pisses me off to no end when you have a romance or ecchi anime where the perverted material is drastic but apparently sex is bad sometimes even kissing is considered dirty. how does that make sense? Thoughts? |

If it gets a sex scene it's automatically defined as hentai. I haven't really seen it but I'm sure Shoujo Sect has sex scenes which are shown, and it's love. Again, I've only read some summaries but yeah. Oh, and it's a yuri. Sorry, bro. |

This reminds me ... http://myanimelist.net/anime/1639/Boku_no_Pico Try B Gata H Kei, there's a sex scene at the end of the series. It's not really necessary to have sex scenes in every Ecchi/Harem animes as long as the story is going well. There are times when fanservice animes are better off w/o sex scenes. |

Well there's Bokura Ga Ita where Yano tells Nanami that he had sex with his dead girlfriend's sister. (The name escapes me at the moment) There's also REC where in the first few episodes the two main characters 'hook up'. |

ef - a tale of memories. Had them, and wasn't ecchi or hentai. But I think the reason for limited sex scenes in anime is that the characters are usually quite young. In western movies for example the sex is quite often between two adults. |

This pretty much, but i agree that there should be some sort of interaction like that in more animes, mostly because i think the idea of it is amazing, as if it solidifies the relationship between the two characters even more so. Onegai Teacher also had implied sex, and it did have a sort of a scene on episode 13. Clannad After story: Nagisa had a kid....And unless storks exist in their world =p..... So overall, i think the majority of your animes that are straight out romance should have more implied sex. It just makes you smile and think it's cute when you watch it =). |

Ok guys I actually saw some of the ones you mentioned but they are mediocre animes mostly. I am talking about the top romance animes with great plots not having sex scenes. Note that I am not talking about explicit sex like hentai. I am talking about love making type scenes where you aren't really showed that much similar to many real life movies. So no boobs showing and no privates showing. Aki sora and Yosuga no Sora are usually categorized as soft hentai and their plots are trash imo. Yosuga no sora was like, meet a girl talk for a few days and then sex repeated 5-6 times. I am trying to point out that some ecchi anime/ romance anime are so perverted that having a sex scene wouldn't mean much at all. In fact I think a toned down sex scene would be less perverted that the stuff they show already. sex shouldn't be considered dirty in romance animes, it should be considered something passionate and stepping up a relationship. EDIT: also about characters being generally young in anime is not true. I understand shonen anime where its HS kids but if its seinen where they are in college or older i don't understand what the problem is. |

Try Nana and Paradise Kiss. That author puts alot of sex in her romances, almost entirely implied. Those two have the most tasteful and dramatic uses imo, none of that childish "oh I'm pregnant" stuff from Clannad or cheap ecchi/hentai. |

"Their" sex scenes? Whose sex scenes are you talking about, exactly? For example hentai is just porn with no story, Partially true, but the average hentai still has a lot more story than the average Western live-action porno movie.Also... http://myanimelist.net/anime/145/Kare_Kano http://myanimelist.net/anime/1941/Moonlight_Mile http://myanimelist.net/anime/63/DearS (heavily-implied sex involving a secondary male character) http://myanimelist.net/anime/8795/Panty_&_Stocking_with_Garterbelt (LOL) Some reasons why ecchi/harem romance anime might not have sex scenes: * They usually only adapt the early portions of the manga or light novels, so sex scenes and "choosing a girl" would mean anime-original plot developments. (And we all know people would rather have inconclusive 12-episode manga commercials than any anime-original content whatsoever. * The creators don't want to ruin the images in otakus' minds of the characters as pure/virginal/whatever, as seen in incidents like this one (link NSFW!). And that all stemmed from a backstory mention that a female character had an ex-boyfriend, meaning "implied implied sex" at the most. Or witness the otaku rage and CD-breaking when they find out that a favorite character's voice actress is dating somebody (see: Ayana Taketatsu, Aki Toyosaki, Aya Hirano). In a climate where selling figures and hugpillow covers is necessary for the financial success of a property, creators can't risk ruining the "purity appeal" of their characters with in-universe/canon sex scenes. Yet these same otaku are okay with all manners of disturbing gang-rape doujinshi and fan art of the same characters... |

No. People are missing the actual reason - it can't be done. Most of the time at least. Why? Because most anime shows involve young teenagers; never ones who are older. Sex scenes in Western movies involve adults, not children. Well, obviously I'm saying this in a loosely-based fashion but yeah. When they do involve adults, they usually just make it a full-fledged hentai for the sake of ease in terms of convention. Noone wants to break outside of te predefined box. An exception to this would be animes like Highschool of the Dead in which there was a sex scene similar to ones found in Westen movies. The only reason it worked in the show was because they looked pretty much like adults and the "atmosphere" of the show was a bit more mature as opposed to shows like Air and stuff. However, I feel that shows like Clannad would have been a great choice for a sex scene, but they probably choose not to include it but instead mention it to keep it a lot "safer". In short, it's just hard to find a good reason or a good atmosphere to create a sex scene. Afterall, two students from a highschool facing off against the supernatural (i.e a shounen with action & romnce) having consensual sex seems...random. |

From what I recall... Cowboy Bebop Has a little flashback scene of Spike and Julia making love. Nothing explicit is seen, anyway. Perfect Blue Two rape scenes, one in the context of the series and more subdued, and the other one more explicit at the last part of the movie. Aki Sora & Aki Sora Yume No Naka There are lots of porn scenes here lol. Paranoia Agent I bet there was something during the third episode, or at least a direct reference. School Days Many implied, I think nothing explicit. My Neighbour Totoro Ok, this one's a joke. |

It depends on the audience and the airing time of the series. Also, if the series' original source material doesn't have sex scenes then the series probably won't have them. Another thing- there's always hentai and there are hentai with good romance in them though that's hard to come across. |

Sex in different forms may be an essential part of a story as much as murder, friendship, war or other more broadly used concepts, for example Perfect Blue deals with fetish as a major plot point, and many movies use explicit sex scenes not only because of the porn factor but because they are moments where latent emotions become intense. I wouldn't mind having a scene of two characters making love if that action was used in a broader context to build and add to the interactions of the characters. Be it animated or not, I don't care. If there is something anime taught me, is that the differences between live action and animation are merely formal. |

I'd say it's a combination of the age thing and the fact that sex in anime seems to be pretty divisive among the fan community - many people automatically flag it as hentai. Those who abhor nudity and sex in anime might reject it and give the series a bad reputation via word of mouth (hence potentially losing a lot of viewers). Then again, my perspective on the question is overwhelmingly biased as my list and favorites likely indicate. |
