what the?

somehow this has a blood-c feel to it. i mean that in the end its a ploy to fool the main character into believing something unreal and everyone who died are actually alive and then killed again

Oh god. The ending with the umbrella was beautiful. Lmao. Didn't think this was that type of show, but oh boy. Colour me entertained. She was a dumb annoying bitch anyway, no loss here.

ooooh I like the "one sees Misaki before death" theory. Seems to be legit.

HO. LY. SHIT.

Best show of 2012 right here. Nope, can't argue with me. Nothing will touch this. THIS is how you make a show. Take notes, directors. This is the only show that I literally cannot wait for the new episodes to come out of.

Watching it in the brand new 1080p Crunchyroll offers on a 42" HDTV was LEGIT.

Nice reading choice there, Sakakibara. H.P. Lovecraft... couldn't find a more fitting author.

One I don't like how everybody is avoiding the past. Something must really bad must have happened to Misaki.

So Misaki Fujioka is Mei's cousin but Mei doesn't exist? I dont understand.

And I will say the ending was a lil too brutal yet awesome. There will be prolly more death as the story gets revealed.

I'm surprised how many users don't seem to like this show or even call it comedy. This series has such fantastic atmosphere and direction for horror. Watching it in the dark with my headphones, the music and sound really works wonderfully. I was shocked by the ending, I thought this series would have a very slow build-up.

...So it was just a false eye? Kinda of a weak reveal, hopefully it'll have some point to the anime. And oblivious as the main character is about everything, that ending is exactly what this anime needed, built up or whatever, it's hard to not want to beat the obvious into the main character with a baseball bat after almost three episodes of the other characters practibly shouting at him something fucked up here.

Still decent enough to watch, and might end up good (Instead of being meh or decent).

Wow!!! I thought the mystery around the girl was intense but death in episode 3, bloody, and of the umbrella variety blew my mind. I didnt sign up for this if it means characters around main character will die. Teshigawara!!! The order of characters in the ending?

This anime is scaring me and I cant stop watching.

So I am like "nice, Sakakibara is really dedicated to advance the plot foward in this epi, all out to find about the mysteries" and then "OMG umbrellas aren't supposed to work that way!"

Hell yeah episode 3! That was way better than relying on the creepy static soundtrack all the time. xD

The eyepatch was meh, so she got seeing-what-cant-be-seen powers from it? Like see herself? XD Because she already stated she doesn't exists... (maybe metaphorically? nah...)

And the rest of the story of class 3 was "everyone dies and that will happen now too"? Or can they be more creative than that? XD

omg this funny and grim at the same time. I was expecting someone to die by the end of the episode but not here... things got really interesting.
There is no tag for supernatural so ill give this the benefit of the doubt. Maybe everybody is purposely ignoring her and the girl got surprise at the end since she was holding a conversation with someone instead of acting as if she didn't exist... idk... just shooting ideas -.-

I had a feeling there might be a body count, but was hoping it would stay with atmospheric rather than visceral horror. Definitely wasn't prepared for it to go into so much detail. Well, it's time to get in the practice of not getting attached to these characters. I was getting fond of twintails-chan too.

For some reason this whole episode made me think of the manga Uzumaki, and I'm not sure why. There is no whole deep enough I could crawl into to escape an animation of that.

They don't make umbrella ferrules that pointy and dangerous anymore. Who's umbrella was it that she took anyway, the Penguin's? Did it have a machine gun hidden as well, or was she just going after Batman? Because it may as well have for the absurdity. ...unless the umbrella was made in China.

Still, I don't think I should have read the manga before watching the anime. Would have made me more on edge if I watched the anime first, especially when Misaki tells Sakakibara what made him nearly shit his pants.

The overall feel between the anime and manga is completely different despite the story remaining more or less the same. Since the death scene was animated and uncensored...it was super more grotesque and disturbing than when it happened in the manga. In the manga, it felt like an instant-kill, but the anime made it so she lived a few more seconds wriggling in pain while bleeding to death. This is a pretty creepy and gross horror story alright.

SERIOUSLY GUYS, you're killing me here, I'm laughing at you trying to put together realism for anime. Stop trying, it's a futile act.

I'm not asking for realism. But i would like it to be somewhat plausible. She would have been more likely to have taken the umbrella outside and get struck by lightning holding it than to have that one in a billion freak accident death they gave her. The stupidest part is that the umbrella itself, which was wrapped and bound closed, magically flung itself out her hand and beat her down the stairs fast enough to magically become unbound and unfurl itself in the incredibly unlucky proper position. On top of that, the tip of the umbrella looked more like a damn secret spy umbrella than a household one.

I mean how can you take that even remotely seriously?!

I liked pretty much everything about the show until that point. I expected there to be some deaths in the show. I was even frightened for the girl as she fell thinking she might break her heck or crack her skull open and die. But as soon as I saw the damn umbrella pop open I was like," no, they're going to kill her stupidly like that?!? WTF!!"

When you have a cartoony death like that it kills the suspense and drama that it was building up throughout the first 3 episodes. That's my point.

Yes, a previous poster was hyperbolic when he stated that "Final Destination" was more real. But the point I think he was trying to make was that the deaths in that show became so ludicrous that it ceased being a action/thriller/horror and became a sick macabre/farce/comedy.

The death in this episode was "final destination"-like. I hope the trend doesn't continue.

My theory goes like this, they all see Misaki (like proved by the glassess guy and his friend when Misaki was on the roof and Kouchi ran to see her) but refuse to believe in her thinking that she will eventually dissapear if they ignore her long enough. I guess that'd be current students trying to repair their ancestors mistake of believing Misaki was alive after her death.
There's also Misaki, why would she lie about Misaki being her cousin? Maybe she really was her cousin and Misaki Mei is alive and people are aftaid of her after 26-years ago story so they ignore her?

That's one good logic there. Its finally getting clearer to me but more still a bit confusing on the other hand. I guess there are still a lot of mysteries that needs to be revealed like the old desk lying inside the room, the first Misaki's real cause of death, and Kouichi's mom relation to the incident happened 26 yrs ago. I also doubt that Misaki lied to Kouichi when Mei told him she was Misaki's(from 26 yrs ago) cousin.

What is all this talk about realism? It's a horror story. Do you have any clue what Japanese Horror is about? True blue realism is about the last thing anyone should expect out of a show like this.

The point of the umbrella death was that it was such a bizarre occurrence that no one would expect. It has much greater impact than if she had just broken her neck. Japanese Horror.

Just out of curiosity did anyone from the original class survive? We don't really know what happened to sakakibara's mom. I'm starting to get the feeling that the "curse" is maybe something along the lines of if you see Mei or acknowledge her, you die before graduating (thus the whole "I'll tell you the full story in a month" and the reason why they moved the class trip a year earlier). I'm guessing the curse gets passed down threw the generations of survivors and their family's. Whether or not it's an actual curse or something else remains to be seen though.

With that said I still have doubts that Mei is actually dead. Kids have clearly been seeing her since the first episode. You can see it in their face when they look in the general direction that she's in. If she is dead and the above curse that I'm theorizing is true...then pretty much everyone is about to die soon except for a few teachers who havent seen her (ie. the guy in this episode who ran by. The camera didn't show Mei). If that's the case then I wonder what sakakibara's role in this will be. Will he survive because he's the only one who's accepted her or will be die an accidental death like the rest?

I like the story so far. Leaves a lot to the imagination. Is Mei a Doll? Is she alive but ignored? Is she a ghost? Is she a hallucination? Is she the bringer of death? :)

I don't why people are so concern about the reality inside the Anime T.T"

here is a screenshot taken from episode 1

Okay...The sub is a bit wrong. Its not the whole school, its only happen in 3-3 class. What they mean by "closer" to death. It means that people die more easily in that class. For example, most people can survive by jumping down from 1 storey high(8-10ft), but people from that class can easily die from it.Max death coincidence .

The death scene at first freaked and disgusted me out, but then, I thought about how incredibly unrealistic it was. Nonetheless, it was still scary to me, since it rained today, and I carried an umbrella with me during the daytime. Thankfully, my umbrella doesn't have a pointy top.

I would agree with you, wasn't it for the fact that we still don't have a clear picture yet - is it going for realism or supernatural events. I do however agree that I wouldn't want it to continue in this manner.

Indeed.

It was a very cinematic and grotesque death, it did its job well.

Anyway, the slow build is starting to pay off a bit now... I like how ambiguous Mei's existence is, really adds to the intrigue. The entire success of this show hinges on its secrets, so I'm hoping for some well thought out explanation for all of this. I'm enjoying it enough so far.

A realistic horror series? I don't think I've heard of such a thing.

So far I haven't found any anime or manga that have been particularly frightening. Uzumaki came close, but everything else has been either gorey or just vaguely creepy. I'm probably not looking hard enough.
