According to film critic Otaka Hiroo's tweet, the box office revenue of the K-On! movie in the first two days was 316.3 million yen. Considering the relatively small number of screens (137 scr), it was a record high number.

Initial box office takings of other movies
The Adventures of Tintin: 319,3 million yen (895 scr)
Gintama: Shinyaku Benizakura-hen: 200 million yen (90 scr)
Summer Wars: 127 million yen (127 scr)
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance: 512.2 million yen (120 scr)
One Piece Film: Strong World: 485 million yen (188 scr)

Same. If it was there then it surpassed the others.

@dtshyk: how long were the other movies shown to reach that high btw?

Lol inconsistency. Or maybe its's consistency in its own perverse way - always finding a way to justify hatin', no matter the disingenuous contortions necessary.

You deserve a cookie for your coherence, good sir. The best way I could have put it is "haters gonna hate."

@OT: So the K-On movie did well, eh? I'm interested in knowing the sales and screening for the Sora no Otoshimono movie, the Hayate no Gotoku movie, and the Negima movie.

Why has the way of writing K-ON! changed to K-On! on MAL actually? The official is K-ON!, it's written like that in all official announcements, posters and logos. I have no idea where K-On! came from.

Anyway, staying relevant here, I guess that's good for K-ON!; I'm indifferent toward the franchise, but I can certainly agree with those that have mentioned it that this only proves its staying power~

I think that's just weird wording from dtshyk, it's not a "record" of anything in particular, but it's really incredibly good for an otaku movie. Obviously kid/family movie (SJ stuff, Ghibli, Conan, Pokemon) do way more, they're the titles that gross over ¥1bn lifetime. And Evangelion is Evangelion. It's its own world.

I actually think number of screens isn't super important to otaku movies, I mean Shoushitsu only opened on 24 and it did over ¥800m from Feb to end of 2010. I don't know how much K-ON! movie will do lifetime, but it's not like having 2, 3, or 5x as many screens = 2, 3, or 5x as much revenue.

Otaku movie ? i don't think so , there is statistic that showed that K-ON has pretty good share of normal people audience ( people who doesn't watch anime frequently ) since K-ON is pretty much for everyone except maybe some elitist

Anyway nice to see K-ON doing well , can't wait.

Unfortunately Box Office Mojo doesn't list historical data in yen, only USD, and I don't know how they calculate exchante rates so I don't know how apples to apples the converstion is, but:

2011 Yearly Box office
Rank - Title - Total Gross - Release date
139 Mahou Sensei Negima! Anime Final $509,926 8/27/2011
146 Gekijouban Sora no otoshimono: Tokei jikake no enjeroido $270,495 6/25/2011

I assume Negima includes Hayate, they were shown as a double feature, right? For comparison, K-ON! did approximately $4 million USD in its first two days.

Edit: BOM might undercount a bit though. They have haruhi Shouhshitsu at $7.4 million USD, when we know it did over ¥800m yen which is actually over $10 million USD.

Oh dear. That's not very good. T_T
Did the studios take a hit because of these adaptations. Will these performances affect future adaptations of the original material?

Really really hope we don't need to wait any longer than late May or so, but it could go until next Fall easily.

That's why I didn't set a date in my head for the K-ON movie and just thought that we will get it sometime, because it can easily take a year for it to come out on BD, and I'm absolutely NOT watching it with camrips. I have seen a few minutes of a Haruhi camrip and turned it off immediately.

According to your logic, not every series is a series for Otaku. I'm pretty sure every series created by a Japanese mangaka are meant for Otaku and families alike. A movie like any studio Ghibli movie can be enjoyed by Otaku and obsessed as well, While an anime like Naruto or one piece is primarily enjoyed by Otaku. In my opinion and truth, every series/movie created by a Mangaka of Japan are for Otaku and there is not one that I have came across that myself being a hardcore Otaku has not enjoyed. By calling it "Otaku movie" you're saying it as if not all the animated movies are meant for Otaku that come out of Japan, when that is their primary audience. I guarantee there are loads of Otaku that watch studio Ghibli, Conan and Pokemon that are not children. And let's not forget about the millions of Otaku internationally that love this stuff as well.

I've been wondering the exact same thing.

my theory here is

K-ON! or K-ON!! = Official Anime Name as per majority release

K-On! = Keion-bu: formal name written english (Kei=K, on=On) but still has the meaning light music club

in short, no actual difference. it is just that capitalization...

there are instances Clannad is written as CLANNAD in various anime picture and magazines but it is accepted as Clannad... same with the Clannad: After Story

just my COMMON SENSE...
