General Forum/Site Guidelines

The following guidelines were written so that you, the general user, can get an idea of what you can expect and what is to be expected of you during your time on the forums and other parts of MyAnimeList.net. The FAQ is also recommended reading.

These have been written as general guidelines only, and are superseded by any more specific rule threads on a particular section of the site written by a staff member that say otherwise. The administrator and the forum moderators reserve the right to make exceptions to any of these rules whenever they feel it is necessary to do so to maintain proper decorum.

If you find any content that does not meet these criteria, please report it using the Report links (in the case of forum posts or comments), or report them here.

1. Anything considered illegal in a US court of law will be acted upon as the law prescribes. Don’t cyber with kids.
2. Links to copyrighted, non-fair use material are not allowed
3. Do not upload any NSFM (Not safe for MAL) images to the site (including user and club images). Exception: They may be posted on the forum, BUT they must be plain links only, contained within a spoiler and appropriately labelled.
4. Trolling, abuse and/or harassment will not be tolerated.
5. Impersonation of another member of the site or function is not allowed and will result in the removal of whatever part of your profile, avatar or signature constituted it.
6. Do not spam or advertise on MAL.
7. Please search for older threads on your topic before making a new one. If an older thread exists, please post in that, but make sure your post contributes and does not break another rule.
8. Topics made outside the appropriate board will be moved and posts irrelevant to a thread topic may be deleted.
9. Topics without a clear topic title will be edited for clarity. This includes typos.
10. Stretching the forum layout with text or images is frowned upon and the offending post will be edited. Please use spoiler tags.
11. Use spoiler tags when discussing key plot elements.
12. Images placed in forum signatures must not exceed a total area of 600px width by 150px height and a total file size of 300kb.
13. Please report threads that reach 10k replies, so that a moderator can make the next version.
14. Do not reply to rule violations in the violating thread. Use the report link located on each post and the moderators will handle it.
15. All posts in the main forums must be in English.

Failure to abide by these rules will result in various consequences, ranging from PM warnings to temporary to permanent bans. Recurring, willful transgressions will result in a permanent ban.

Definitions:

NSFM: Content that might be considered offensive or too sexually explicit for the wide range of age groups on MAL’s userbase. This includes, but is not limited to, erotic, excessively violent, bigoted, and harmful content.

• Erotic: Nudity, implied sexual acts, bodily fluids.
  
• Violent: Gore, disembowelment, dismemberment, torture.
  
• Bigoted: Irrationally hateful content aimed at or relating to any group or individual.
  
• Harmful: Seizure images
  

Impersonation: Intentionally posting as another user or staff member, copying their signature, avatar, or profile picture, choosing a username that may be confused for another.

Spam: Content without any purpose, coherency or relevance whatsoever. Posts that have only images with no relevance to the discussion. This includes reaction images. Quote-chaining (with or without +1/i agree/yes/lol/ type comments) qualifies as spam.

Advertising: Posting content with the intent to attract visitors to another location, either an external site or another location on MAL (e.g. Clubs).

Trolling/harassment/abuse: Intentionally angering specific members or social groups.

Spoiler: Any remark, comment, summary or description of a series that reveals one or more plot elements which will give away the outcome of an episode within the series, or the conclusion of the entire series. (Source: Wikipedia)
