Original Spotlight Thread: Gintoki Sakata (Gintama)

For the next two weeks I would like to have everyone familiar with this character discuss what they think makes it an exceptional character. What attributes make it stand out in the ocean of interesting characters that exist in the realms of anime and manga.

Unlike the other two subjects I will not force this conversation to fall into any set structure. Characters that are nominated typically get here because they are adept at breaking the existing character moulds and defying definition.

Because of this freedom I encourage everyone to do their very best to stay on topic and keep any and all debate civil. Have fun and I look forward to seeing what everyone has to say about this character.

RESULTS OF THE RESURRECTION POLL

Gintoki Sakata was PERMANENTLY barred from induction into the club Character list:
23 Yes - 71.8%
9 No - 28.1%

28 Don't know this character - 44.4% of the total number polled
3 Abstained - 4.7% of the total number polled

Is not enough with the series included?
So far (38), it's refreshing to see a protagonist who is a parody of everything that one always sees in the Shonen Jump series, but do not look so remarkable to include it. The series is well on it. Or is it perhaps be a protagonist who makes fun of this, makes great enough to include it?. Personally, I think not.

Several chapters were hahaha, but do when it starts a "saga"?

If I recall, the episodes leading up to 50 are the ones where a major, multi-episode spanning "saga" appears. That when Gintoki's BA side appears.

Just re-posting what I wrote in the original thead again:
Gintama is a parody anime and most of the characters of the series are the parody of many stereotypes in shounen anime/manga. Gintoki above all is the parody of all those shounen heroes we see on and on. Most of the stereotypical shounen heroes, are teenagers or are very young men with exaggerated moral codes or grudges and would do anything for the sake of what they believe. Gintoki targets these type of characters. I love him for that reason. Even when he decides to "teach some morals to some random guy" he doesn't forget to do it in a sarcastic way. He even goes as far as cheating in order to win a battle since he's not too into fighting.
He seems to have been one of those shounen characters himself but now he's grown tired of it all and he just wants to take it easy. Every now and then there are hints of his past behavior in him but soon he reverts back to his normal self by either avoiding the situation or even resorting to cheating and other tricks. He's become the opposite of what he was before ( Lazy, easy going and not so good with the brain) and in my opinion the reasons given for this change are sensible enough not to make me feel uneasy with this change.
Gintoki as a character has enough depth, has many sides to him and functions the best in the setting he lives in; A world turned upside down by the aliens where samurais are not needed or welcome anymore. Just like many of the real samurais in Japan who went with the flow of the modernizing Japanese lifestyle once they weren't needed as samurais anymore, Gintoki graduates from being a shounen samurai hero and becomes a master of odd jobs. Aside from the jokes and parodies, I believe Gintoki's character is close to being a realistic representation of what many of the fearsome samurais in Japan turned into after the ban of using swords by the emperor.
