According to the official website, the Blu-ray box set of Fate/Zero was announced to be released on March 7th. The price is 39,900 yen ($525). The uncut edition of the first thirteen episodes will be included. The animation will be in 1920 x 1080p and subbed in Japanese and English. Fuck the value of the Yen.

Looks like I'll be waiting to see what price Aniplex USA will be selling it at.

I wish I could spend that amount on a Blu-ray box set. Sadly, I'm not that hardcore of a fan, so I'd be blaming myself for a long time if I actually bought it.

That's why I hoped that a certain politician became minister in Japan, Kan or his rival, I don't remember exactly, only that one of them was thinking well by lowering the values of the yen... Anyhow.

Damn, 525 dollars. That really is sick.

I was reading this and somehow I missed the price. I was thinking that I might actually buy it. Then I saw the price. I wouldn't pay that much even if I suddenly won a million.

Hmmm, uncut makes it sound interesting, I am always fond of things that are never included and are special additions to something, however if i had 500$ lying around i am sure i could find a better use for it. But props to the hardcore fans who are devoted enough to buy this

3000yen per episode? For a 25 episode anime that's even somewhat expensive for japan. Guess because it's all "quality" and stuff? Heh...

Well, if you think about Madoka Magica (6 Volumes à 7,350¥) which was ~44,000¥ for 13 episodes, I think the price is quite reasonable. And this was not a Blu-Ray Box of awesome, you know?

But of course for people outside of Japan that sounds somewhat hard to afford. They also have very pricey movie tickets compared to the US/EU, that's why I ask you to compare the price with recent series (like Madoka Magica above) rather than juding by the price in US-Dollar. Having said that, I'll probably wait for a local release as well.

as for the extra clip written by Nasu Kinoko (Give us Mahoutsukai already)

Not really, this is the equivalent of 9 discs at ~¥8800 MSRP each for two cour, assuming the second box is the same price, as seems likely. Maybe a couple hundred yen more per disc than I would have expected, at the absolute most.

So this costs about the same as any other two cour anime aimed at otaku. It just sounds more expensive because you're buying it in two parts rather than 8-13.

In fact it's better for importers because you only pay shipping twice rather than 8+ times. I put big orders in at Amazon Japan (9+ items each time) so I get per-item shipping down to about ¥450-500, so I'm paying ¥900-1000 (~$12-13) rather than ¥4050-4500 (~$53-59). For someone who spends more per item in shipping (smaller orders or whatever) the savings are even bigger.

Honestly I'd prefer more releases like this.

Edit: When are we going to be able to type ampersands again? Oh well at least quote tags dont break on edit anymore.

Which is fine and understandable, but you probably don't want to even contemplate imports, then.

Don't worry, I did the math. It is somewhat expensive. Most shows like this have episode-prices of 2200-2600 Yen. Nichijou is a lot more expensive, but that's a weird exception. Stuff like Hanasaku Iroha or K-On had ~2600yen per episode. It's not by a whole lot, but it is a bit expensive.
Of course that doesn't include any "extras" yet. Does the boxset have as much extras as 4-5 discs would have?

And I was expecting them to charge more...

Still pretty damn expensive. The tax alone on that would make me shudder.

It's actually a reasonable price in Japan. They tend to mark down the price of DVD/BDs if it gets released in the west, probably because no one here would touch it with that kind of price tag.

For example, Kara no Kyōkai had a price tag in Yen equivalent to $450 USD and it still rapidly sold out when it was released.

If it is 13 episodes, having a slightly higher price than average is somewhat reasonable, since the first episode was double length.

KnK's length was equal to 22 or 23 episodes of regular anime though.

I'm defining anything below ¥9240 * 9 to be within the "average" range for two cour anime. `¥8800 is the high end of average certainly, but still better per-episode than most 1 cour shows. Once you apply the typical 27% Amazon preorder discount the real difference in price is even smaller. When I think "more expensive than usual" for two cour I'm thinking of your Kadokawa 12-13 disc releases. I guess all in all this won't cost me (if I import F/Z) much if anything more than I would have guessed were it singles.

Of course that doesn't include any "extras" yet. Does the boxset have as much extras as 4-5 discs would have?

Hard to say, it has the OST and drama CD and on-disc bonus features and an artbox and some other stuff. Singles are so so very variable in the amount and quality of their extras that there isn't a good baseline to use. Not sure we'd get much more (of any value) out of 6 individual discs, though I suppose that depends on what kind of extras you enjoy.

Seeing as how it comes to about the same price as most other two cour Japanese anime BD releases, and is cheaper than some I've bought, uh... the same people who already import plenty of other shows? Like myself. And probably 30,000+ Japanese fans.

This set is by no means "cheap" (I'd never try to claim importing anime was anything of the sort), but as someone who regularly buys Japanese anime BDs it's nothing that makes me do a double-take. I'm paying about the same amount, except in 2 purchases rather than 8 to 13. If I like the show enough to import, the price will not be an obstacle at all.

i respect that, and i understand it's not out-of-water ridiculous pricing by any means. but personally, i could never like an anime (or any tv show ) enough to justify $525 spent on it.

I don't think I necessarily like anime any "more" than any other passionate fan. For damn sure I know there are way way way way bigger Type Moon/Fate fans than me out there.

It's just about how much you value this hobby in general, in terms of a dollar amount, and how important supporting the original production committees/creators directly is to you. Certainly your own economic situation matters, of course. I wouldn't be importing if I were 17 again and back in college, or working fast food or hourly-wage retail or anything like that.

I didn't always import. I just started importing when I got thoroughly disgusted with the R1 industry and decided I would much rather pay more to buy the Japanese releases directly. I would much much rather pay $600 to import than pay trash like Funimation $60 for the same show, for example. S I started importing, and now I'm hooked on it and just really enjoy buying and owning the stuff.

I've never bought anime before but I was going to make an exception for Fate/Zero. I knew it was going to be a lot, but it had best be much cheaper for its American release. I'm hesitant to even pay 100$. Guess I'll probably end up buying a normal dvd set.

I'd pay$100 for it even if it was only subbed.

$525....then shipping and taxes? Not a chance.

Things that $525 will buy.

Car payment.
Months rent. (depending on where you live of course)
Gas and groceries for a month.
10 anime box sets instead of 1.
A PS3, 360 as well as a Wii. (used of course)
About 9 latest release current generation games.

Any one of those for half....HALF a series and a couple little bonuses. I'm sorry, buying that doesn't make you more of a fan than anyone else. It means you either A) have a lot of spare income with little sense or B) really bad priorities.

I really hate the current OST policy of Aniplex. The OSTs of nearly all their current animes, are only bundled with the Blu-Ray Releases and not released as stand-alone OSTs. As a collector of anime OSTs, I am really annoyed, especially because I would buy the Madoka or Fate/Zero OSTs if they would be released seperately.

Except for the original market it's not "$525", it's ¥39900. Which includes Japanese sales tax already. And after Amazon discount is ¥29,526. And within Japan, shipping from Amazon is free. Fixating on the USD price when we've got a literally historic low exchange rate is misleading.

But let's take the price for importers anyway: ¥29,526 at Amazon. Sales tax is not charged to non-Japanese, so -5% for ¥28,049. Shipping in a decent-sized order is about ¥500 an item, though it's more if this is the only thing you buy. There are no import taxes/fees on BDs if you live in the US. total price, about ¥28,549 yen.

Back in the day of sane ¥100/$1 exchange rates that came to $285.49, approximately half the price everyone is shitting themselves over. Sadly the exchange rate is *atrocious* right now at ¥76/$1 which inflates the price to $375.65. Cheap? No. Can I afford it? Easily.

It means you either A) have a lot of spare income with little sense or B) really bad priorities.

I can respect that imports cost too much for most people, and don't expect you to buy it. But I lose all respect for you when you are stupid enough to insult the people who buy the JP releases and make it possible for any of you to have any anime in the first place. So in short, fuck you, I will buy what I want. I'm not going to apologize for having a decent job and making anime my #1 priority when it comes to discretionary/luxury spending. I don't buy videogames or drugs or fancy cars or trendy clothes or iPhones other things that other people consider to be important, so I can afford to pay more for anime. Don't try to tell me what the correct priorities are.

I'm shocked every time I see it regardless, but then again I'm a jobless broke college student. I'd have to sacrifice a lot to spend this much money on anime. The fact they can get away with this in Japan and the devotion of fans amazes me.

Not to mention the value of the dollar is complete shit right now. Stuff from most other countries would sound really expensive in dollar amounts.
