So she gets "mad" because he's got a girlfriend but there will still be no romance. Why put unnecessary stuff like this in an anime?

Another very good episode :) Hard to believe a show about a card game could be this good!

I just wanted to post and say that this episode is where the plot gets serious! One of my friend's favorite anime that he just recommended to me and one of my first sports anime. I'm enjoying it thus far.

Chihaya was great in this episode. It was predictable that Arata stopped playing, I guess because his grandfather died or something like that, but let's see....

Ughhh I can't get into this anime no matter how many episodes I watch. Guess I'm not in the mood for this type of anime right now.

Is it only me or the quality took a dive in this episode? I mean the animation/drawings, not the story/plot. Even then, I must say I found the plot more interesting during the flashback. Not that this episode was bad, in fact it was great, but still. Also, Chihaya is only 15, I thought she was around 18 in the present. She doesn't look 15 at all. Speaking of her, I love how much she loves karuta.

Lastly, great, now it is Arata's time to be a douche. -.-

Agh Chihaya, your being too cruel to Taichi by being so innocent. I suppose that's what he deserves for being such a jerk to Arata as a kid xD

I'm guessing Arata's grandfather passed away which somehow led to him quitting Karuta.

There must be some very very unhappy incident, which arata faced, so he give up karuta.

Such intensity during Chihaya's match, going into this series wasn't expecting karuta to be so interesting to watch and to keep my attention so much.

Gloomy scene prior to the call gave away that Arata quit karuta due to his grandfather quitting for me.

This anime is genius, why? it takes a boring card game and transforms it into something great.

The soundtrack is amazing too.

I'd love to be able to fall asleep instantly (with eyes open, no less) as Chihaya does... Arata's attitude is mildly annoying, though.

Chihaya worked really hard to get to class A.
Arata seems to be really lonely, I wonder what happened.

Some of the GODIVA chocolates I ate sucked and their ice cream was so-so. What sucks the most is their shop assistants, at least in my country.
That being said, Taichi was really kind to buy the expensive chocolate for Chihaya.

Still I ship Chihaya×Taichi, even since the first ep when he's a little jealous jerk. Let's be honest, who's always been so kind & nice like Chihaya in your whole life? At least he's always sincere to Chihaya.

Chihaya had a tough match, but still managed to win.

And Arata stopped playing karuta..

Not surprised that Arata has seemingly quit Karuta. No way things could be that easy.

I'm not liking Chihaya so far... there's plenty of genki girl types like her and the whole "I have a dream" thing doesn't bring anything new.

Poor Taichi. I could see myself buying the $70 chocolates in a situation like that, so I can really sympathize. LOL.

I think Arata quitting karuta was telegraphed pretty heavily, so it wasn’t a surprise. Most likely, his grandfather’s death and/or his father’s influence had something to do with it. Recall the scene of him seeing his father with that woman?

Anyway, these episodes are blowing by surprisingly fast. This must have been excruciating to watch weekly back when it first aired. It’s just like those chocolates; you want to keep scarfing them down.

I knew he was going to not play anymore!! I wonder if it's storyline such as 'now my grandfather has passed, I can't stand to look at the game anymore' or something.
It's so sad though! It made him so happy as a kid!!

Back to the present! Chihaya finally became an A class karuta player. But wow, who would've thought Arata would end up quitting? He was so motivated as a kid.

Finally, the childhood part ended. I really liked this episode, my only complaint is that Taichi definitely sounds different than when he was younger but Chihaya sounds too similar to her past self at times

Predictable, haha. But I like it! C:
Maybe he injured his hand or gave up Karuta to work and help pay for his grandfather's medical/funeral expenses (or trauma in the case his grandpa died? v likely considering it's a cerebral hemorrhage + old age-- that combo rarely ends well).

But man, Arata's still wearing those type of clothes? I wanted him to grow up super HAWT. Husbando material. Lolololol xD

Taichi's gf isn't that pretty :3 he shouldn't have dated her on a whim, smh. Cuz he clearly still has strong feelings for Chihaya. O whales. He can take his beta male L.

Happy to see Chihaya reach class A which I assume is a somewhat high ranking in Karuta but damn is it depressive for her to hear Arata stopped playing karuta.

Apparently she's got quite a few roles in Chihayafuyu. I'm a bit disappointed that this one is nameless but here's hoping!

The after match theme stood out to me too. It was pretty cute~

There was gonna be some conflict but I didn't think he'd bloody drop Karuta, his one personality trait aside from sucking at losing. I sorta expected him to become an elite St instead so I'm surprised it went this way.

The animators injecting all that intensity into those card swipes never gets old.

Watching the drain for Chihaya's enthusiasm from winning get pulled was heartbreaking man, not to mention the state Arata was in to give an answer like that.

You could see it coming from a mile away, the kid's grandpa passed away from a brain hemorrhage, the kid gets depressed and can never play karuta again or he loses all his interest in the game because every time he plays it it reminds him of his grandpa
