My most recent finished thing I did (which isn't recently at all) was a dress up game for my Gaiaonline character. http://secret-duckie.deviantart.com/#/d4mtwqj Then MOST recently was working on a base and different hair styles for a dress up game with "The Johnny Cutter" Kuroha Diana Shiratori from Eden of the East. Here's her bases (note she is in her undies!) - Image heavy because ther are 5 images in the spoiler! - (^ Not yet shaded) But alas I still haven't finished it. Sort of stopped midway. During the time I was working on those I also did some freebies for someone on Gaia. |

Just a round of critique. I usually don't say anything unless I think there is something I think that could benefit your work, so please don't take it harshly. It's just feedback. ForgoneReality said: @Keilis- I think you did well with such a difficult stance. I really like pastels, so I've been trying to get more comfortable with them. Anyway, latest drawing. http://forgonereality.deviantart.com/#/d52g6jm I like it. I feel like the scene is well presented. However, I feel like you could have spent more time with the characters. I think if you spent a little time doing some drawing using the constructive method, your line work would improve. Drawing for cartoons and animation is actually very hard. The reason for this is because you're always trying to use "economy of line". Because of this restriction of trying to define form with minimal line work, you really have to make some difficult choices in which lines to emphasize and which to drop and this is critical to a good cartoon drawing. There's a lot to say about that, but I'll keep this brief. I love your creativity. Anyway, if you need some help with constructive drawing, here's a few videos I think might be helpful: http://www.ctrlpaint.com/home/2012/5/15/constructive-form-pt-1.html http://www.ctrlpaint.com/home/2012/5/22/constructive-form-pt-15.html http://www.ctrlpaint.com/home/2012/5/17/constructive-form-pt-2.html Keep it up! playmakerjiz said: Exams are all over for me! Drawing time! I've been playing some Warhammer 40k recently. Any who, after a whole lot of trial and error I ended up with this sexy beast! Your pencil work is awesome. If I were to critique this, I would say that you could work on drawing hands. The gun hand doesn't quite look right. Also, I think some of the original energy from your early sketch is lost. This is because your level of detail is equal on every part of the image. I think sketches have more vitality when you can see some under drawing and when there is a clear focal area to the sketch. That is to say, don't render and define scratches and detail marks on every thing in the image. Give a clear idea of what you want the viewer to focus on (focal point) and for the rest of the image, indicate things a little more rather than rendering all that detail on what is unnecessary to convey in your image. Just like economy of line, there should be an economy of detail level so that your images don't looks so flat and lifeless. Honestly, I can see your line work is above most who post here (probably my own included), but when you compare to a pro's level of work, you can tell that they make a lot of choices.. not just what to put in, but what to leave out. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'll be posting some of my own studies pretty soon for feedback. |

@perspective- I'd like to really thank you for your advice and bit of critiquing. I've attempted that rough/simplified foundation type of constructive drawing before and it just feels really uncomfortable to me. I've never been good at making rough drafts or early versions of drawings, and usually strive to get it right in one go. I checked out the videos you linked, and found some of the things said to be interesting, and possibly useful, so I might give it another try. Perhaps I'll have a better experience with the process this time around. You were right though, I spent somewhat less time and energy on the characters. I had saved them for last, and that might not have been the best move. So, thanks for your opinions, and I'll give your advice a try next time. |

Really it's nothing more than a tool to help you realize spatial relationship. My other piece of advice if you want to get better is to draw from reference constantly. For artists, drawing is a lot like writing. You've got to do research, and write draft after draft until you have something solid. Many times this includes thumbnailing ideas so you don't waste time drawing and rendering something that will suck. Even after that it may take you a few times of drawing and re-drawing something to get at something you like. To get decent results you gotta work your butt off. That's something every artist struggles with. |

Stuff I was working on this week. I have not worked with a tablet for a very long time, so my line work is not where I want to be. I'm working towards eventually using the tablet 99% of the time and only using the pencil/pen/markers for field sketching. Given that, I think these still came out pretty decent: |

morgainelesad said: my aunt wanted a portrait of herself... this is what I came up with.... any constructive criticism would be welcome :)))) Since you asked, The value structure doesn't seem quite right. You want to make your darks dark and your lights light. That's to say, you don't want to have 100% black or 100% white in your drawings, but you don't want muddy grays. Also, the shape of the head doesn't seem right. Try to focus on your measuring more. Draw lots of plumb lines and make sure that all of the features of the face line up correctly. Silhouette of the far side of the face just isn't correct. Nobody's forehead juts out further than their brow. Or if the hair is in front, there needs to be a better way to subordinate the face. There are other little things, like eyeballs are never completely white and often have a shadow from the lid on them. The eye lids also have a thickness and the skin folds over on itself (this one always gives me trouble) that you want to show. The nose should have a shadow along the base of it and some of the tip as it turns downward also needs to be shaded. My suggestion for improving values is to draw on toned paper with a soft lead pencil and a white charcoal pencil. Learn to push and pull the tones. Also, form change = value change. Remember that when you are putting down tone, you are deliberately changing the form. http://www.enliighten.com/guts/reference/asaro_head_ref.jpg Many artists use this type of model to help them see the planes of the head. Once you know where the form changes are, it's easy to imagine it under different lighting and how to tone your drawings. You can buy an Asaro head online and pose it under different lighting. Then draw from observation a ton. This will really help your portraits go up a notch. Good luck! |

I used to think that it wasn't needed to buy an expensive tablet since I'm not a professional, then I got one finally (the medium Intuos 4) and was like OMG I WILL NEVER GO BACK EVERRR. It's honestly woth the investment! You'll keep it for a loooot longer, too. I'd blow through the cheapo's (like the old graphires or the bamboos) in like two years. It will help you get a feeling for proportions and the way the human body actually holds itself. It's especially useful when you're working on perspective or strange angles, because those are sometimes hard to try and make up, and a lot of times the proportions are really strange compared to your average view. |

Ooh!! All right. Thank you very much for the advice. You should watch the proportions of the shoulders. They are pretty wide in your drawing. The average female is 2 head widths across the shoulders. Given that you're drawing in a stylized anime fashion, this should be adjusted to be smaller than that due to the over-sized heads. |
