Is this separate from Trigun or would I have to watch Trigun the series first before I watch this?

It's fairly standalone.

You can watch it without knowing anything previously about the series and still get it, but you'll probably like it more if you were familiar with them.

It's much better after watching series , It felt like "hey everyone, it's been while,'m so glad i can see you crazy bad asses again" XD
( Currently interested in OP MC genre. Recommendations are welcomed, preferable those yet not on my list )

yes and no. The series actually spans over a long period of time... 3 years if I remember correctly. You can place the movie somewhere after the episode where Meryl accepts that he is Vash and before Knives's goons start showing up.

And it would not hurt to watch some episodes to understand what is going on. To understand the background of all characters you might want to see the first 9-11 episodes of the series. The movie is placed somewhere after e 9 and before episode 12.
