Ah my bad, skimmed over it too fast I guess. Still, pretty disappointing sales for the rest. I thought at least Sacred Seve and Ikoku Meiro no Croisée would make the cut this week

Also, I must say that it really surprises me how well Uta no Prince Sama did. I thought it was just another average visual novel adaption, but the fujoshi really ate it up so it must of done something right

Anyway, just wait until Ro-Kyu-Bu sales.

^ Also, Ikoku Meiro + Sacred Seven + Neko Kami + KamiMemo did not rank this week either.

Oh, and you forgot to add No.6 for the Summer release...

Ranking threshold is just way too high this week. Even when we get the full Top 50 list on Thursday, some of them might not rank (well Nekogami definitely won't). Sacred Seven might get on the BD list, but the DVD list is already the full Top 100 so nothing there. Ikoku was only estimated to get about 1.7k BDs by Stalker anyway so I don't think it had much chance but the BDs might squeeze in. It's a discounted v1 too, so that's doubly bad. I won't fret too much though, I thought it would be a guaranteed import at the start of the season but then it kind of lost me and just became a "pretty decent" series. I blame Claude. Needed more Alice.

Comes out 9/28, isn't included in this week's rankings. Not that it'll sell much anyway.

Madoka topping the BD chart doesn't surprise me. as that was expected since volume 1.

I am a bit surprised at YuruYuri doing so well. I mean, I loved the show, but I didn't know it was this well-received in Japan as well.

Dog Days ftw, Airi's song hit the charts as well.

Mayo Chiki in 15th that's a surprise.

Oh nice the marrying couple in Yuru Yuri have their songs in the ranking, right next to each other as well. I can see them fighting over which of their songs are better.

Ikoku Meiro only getting 1700 in sales is a big disappointment, I guess Japan doesn't enjoy their lolis too ladylike.

I don't know if that's a typo or what, but I fail to see what's particularly homosexual about UtaPri given that it's a male harem otome game adaptation.

It's selling because it's enjoyable, silly fun, has rather good production values and is just all around well-made. And I say this as a guy - I rather liked it. Not enough to import, but if you ask me it's a lot better than many of the female harem shows for which I'm supposed to be the target audience.

Really, I'd think by now people would have gotten over the sales success that certain fujoshi shows enjoy. UtaPri and Natsume (I am importing the latter) are currently the two best selling shows of the season and probably won't be topped (given the oddities of Idolmaster's release and how it will or rather won't be counted accurately). If you ask me variety is a good thing. Not all anime needs to be aimed at guys. These shows are never going to displace my top favorites but a fun show is a fun show.

Sure is logical, rational, well thought out and understanding post around here... are you sure you're in the right forums?

That being said Uta Pri selling more then Natsume is weird if understandable. Natsume is just amazing. (Uta Pri was a fun time though, haters gonna hate)

Natsume we more or less could predict sales for - first two seasons were extremely consistent in average sales and assumptions were this would do the same, as it has so far. It's the third season now, so odds of it going well above 10k were pretty low, as the fanbase must be pretty settled in at this point. I agree Natsume is the better show, but I don't dwell too much on what sells better than what, I'm mostly just happy if a show I like sells well, period.

UtaPri was sort of a wild card... I don't know how popular the original game was, but after watching the first episode I had a pretty strong feeling it would take off with the ladies. After seeing the CD sales, it was looking pretty definite that it was something big. Have to say though, if I didn't watch Amazon Japan preorder rankings pretty much every day, I'd also be a bit surprised by it having first week sales over 20k. I had come to expect a hit but not quite that high.

It's definitely great to see female fans flexing their purchasing power muscles more than ever in the past couple years, because an industry that ignores half the country's population is missing out. Hetalia, Kuroshitsuji, Oofuri, Natsume, UtaPri, Tiger&Bunny, Hakuouki, all of these successes mean more money for their production committees. And those production committees are made up of the same companies and and investors that make all that anime for us guys, so it's a win-win situation when stuff sells well. It's really a shame that so many fans can only see everything in black and white, zero-sum terms, and that male otaku who on the one hand defend the shows that target them, feel like it's not blindingly hypocritical to use the other hand to smack down anything that might ever excite the fujoshi.

BakaTest isn't doing so hot (even if it probably did about 2k BDs, which we'll find out on Thursday), but Yuru Yuri did very well. Sure you didn't overlook its Blu Ray sales?

DVD: 1,425
BD: 8,367
Total: 9,792 - third highest vol. 1 of Summer so far, could even pass Natsume and take second, and just a very good number no matter how you slice it, especially for a yuri show. Basically, YRYR is one of the biggest hits of the summer season...

Oricon reporting basically goes like this:

Tuesday:
Top 30 Animation DVDs - includes western animation as well, hence the numbers might not be a straight 1-30 since things we don't care about like Cars or Toy Story are removed to reduce clutter.
Top 10/20 Animation BDs - I believe this is a combination of Top 10 Anime + Top 20 (or 30?) All categories, so you could see up to 20 anime BDs on a Tuesday.

Thursday:
Top 100 DVDs, All categories - usually, the Top 30 Animation DVDs lists already goes beyond this because there's less than 30 anime in the full DVD list.
Top 50 BDs, All categories - this is where additions come from on Thursdays, since there are usually more than 10 anime in the BD list, and usually extending beyond the Top 20. Sometimes upwards of 30+ out of 50 are anime.

dtshyk usually posts new threads only for the Tuesday list, and if I remember correctly tends to add the finalized Thursday list in the subsequent wee's Tuesday list as a spoiler-tagged reply.

BakaTest Ni is present on this list in its DVD format, with 1,513 copies sold. We won't know until Thursday how many BDs it sold, and even then we'll only know that if it sold enough to make the Top 50 All. it probably did, since the Top 50 threshold should be like 1k or so and this should have done maybe 2k BDs.

There's a lot of variety on this list; that's unusual, since it's always been the same old, same old.

Glad to see a lot of titles up there, like A-Channel, AnoHana, Oreimo, Baka to Test, Gintama, and then the usuals.

IS: Infinite Stratos is still up there...*sigh*

And oh, wow, No.6...hahaha that last episode was priceless. XD

It's the busiest week of the month and the first week of sales for a lot of first volumes from Summer, so that explains why you see so many different shows. Some Winter and earlier shows are ending now (Index, Madoka, IS, Hetalia WS) so you'll start to see them drop out soon and be replaced with the newer shows.

You tend to see the same old Ghibli DVDs every week during other times of the month because TV anime mostly comes out in the same week at the end of the month (there was a massive amount of stuff released this week) and does most of its sales in 1-2 weeks then drops off until the next volume a month later.

Good to see Madoka Magica consistently maintaining that 50k mark BD sales in the first week. Also very strong in the DVD sales. Madoka Magica should be in the rank 3-4 all time in average sales per volume in its time-slot on TV.

It did not rank this week, at least not yet. That means it sold less than 1047 DVDs and 3114 BDs. We get the full BD list of Thursday; it may be there. It's also been out of stock at Amazon, although I don't think that had a huge effect. Basically, it got a bit of a rally in preorder ranking in the second half, but it was a rally from very low rankings, so it's still not high. Couple thousand at most. And I agree, it's a bit of a shame as the show has been much better than I expected (need to watch the last ep this weekend), in pretty much every way.

For shows from 2000 to present, it's currently #3, although it's been #2 most of the time. This is only the first week of sales for Vol. 6 so it's brought the average down a bit (since the other volumes all have 4 or more weeks clocked in). In a week or two Madoka will be back at #2 and it'll stay there, ahead of Seed Destiny but behind Bakemonogatari.

Bring in shows before 2000 and it's a little sketchier, since sales numbers aren't as comprehensive back then, but at the very least Evangelion and 1st Gundam are ahead of it; although for 1st Gundam that's only true if you count all its re-releases, which total way more than what's recorded for its first run. For just the first run, only Evangelion is ahead of it.

Basically your top 4 in terms of first run sales are:
Evangelion (~112k)
Bakemonogatari (~78k)
Madoka Magica (~68k right now, should end up around ~72k)
Gundam Seed Destiny (~68k)

Also, that chart you linked is only first volume sales, and a bit is out of date.

@jmal, I'm aware that the chart only caters the first volume sales. Can you tell me a link to a more updated version? I get mine from wiki.

Ah, I didn't mean there was a more updated version of that specific chart (well, maybe there is, I dunno), I just meant the numbers on it were a little out of date.

Madoka v1 is up to 78,237 (66,695 BDs, 11,542 DVDs) as of the last time its BDs ranked in the Oricon charts, which was the week of July 11 to July 17.

-- (43) 47 *,308 *66,695 12 Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica v1

There was a news story today saying it's now at approximately 80k, although we'll know the precise number when 2011 yearly totals are released early in 2012.

The volumes are currently:
Vol. 1 - 78,237 (12 weeks)
Vol. 2 - 72,507 (8 weeks)
Vol. 3 - 66,648 (6 weeks)
Vol. 4 - 65,888 (6 weeks)
Vol. 5 - 64,548 (4 weeks)
Vol. 6 - 60,189 (1 week)

Average: 68,003
