Original anime was in short supply for quite some time before K-ON, so while 2009-onward had even less than usual, K-ON has nothing to do with it. Even so, 2010 saw all three Anime no Chikara series as well as Angel Beats, among others. Whether you like the shows or not, it's not that companies weren't trying. It's just that original anime rarely pays off - before or after K-ON! - unless it's got some big names on the staff behind it. Like Angel Beats (Maeda, Key), or Madoka (Urobuchi, Aoki, Kalafina, Shinbou). There are occasional surprise successes like Dog Days though, which is always exciting. I rather enjoy original anime and think what we've gotten in 2011 is really extraordinary, but I understand why there isn't a load of it made too. Why so serious? Of course K-On has nothing to do with it. You are assuming too much from my sentence. u.u~~ |

Art looks pretty nice, not blown away about the story but I'll give this a couple of eps when it comes out. |

Well, if I put more valid reason, I heard an interview of animator who said about the power that producer has on animation. They do not ask 'to make surprising animation'. They ask something like 'anime looks like K-On' or 'animation with high school girls and their daily life'. When there is a hit series, every other mediocre producers will ask for the similar series, not risk taking one. According to that animator, that kind of request was most of the case for animation since K-On boom. Sadly, now producers wil be asking for 'animation with high school girls with dark atmosphere'... >_> And, that's why noitaminA and Iwakami PD is brilliant for trying new things. |

They ask something like 'anime looks like K-On' or 'animation with high school girls and their daily life'. I'd take anything like that with a grain of salt. Is there pressure to mimic the most successful? Totally. The anime industry is an entertainment business and therefore will prefer to make shows people will buy, because otherwise there's no money to make anything with. But should we really buy into the idea that nobody is asked to make anything else? No, that's absurd, the evidence right in front of our eyes disproves this each season. Look at a season *as a whole* and you can see that there is a variety of genres and settings and artistic styles represented. One can argue over how much variety they want, one can argue that their personal favorite genre is underrepresented, but there's really a lot of different stuff there if people bother to look for it and don't just prejudge everything based on superficial criteria. When there is a hit series, every other mediocre producers will ask for the similar series, not risk taking one. Even if true, it would not necessarily explain the lack of original anime. You can make a high school slice of life anime with original characters too. You can make anything with original characters. Original anime doesn't get made as much simply because it often doesn't sell and is a larger investment risk due to having no manga/game/novel original to fall back on or drive sales toward. Sadly, now producers wil be asking for 'animation with high school girls with dark atmosphere'... >_> No objections here. Sign me up. BUY YUYUSHIKI BDS ALL DAY EVERY DAY |

Might watch it just because Yukari Tamura and Haruka Tomatsu are doing the main characters voices :P But yeah, probably nothing groundbreaking :x |
