it was hard to get back into the mood after the previous episode. comparing to ep19, this shaping of the content (character and plot/story development) won my heart.

I'm done questioning this anime. I'm just going to finish up the series and judge it then. These episodes are all great and all but they are really just messing with my head

This was an ok episode, as Vincent has been a pretty two-dimensional MC and this gave a glimpse into his fears and desires.

But I also felt this episode was just trying to be confusing and I was pretty annoyed by the end. It was obvious it was a dream from the get go(we've seen Proxys do this many times by now) and it just seemed to be beating a dead horse.

Just rewatched EP awhile ago and figured out I'll be looking in forums section of MAL if anyone was mindfucked in this episode, oh what should I expect :p

No, this isn't a pretentious episode nor a confusing one. Anyone that doesn't have a background information in regards to Descartes' Meditation (part 1-3 is probably sufficient), and a basic understanding in the phenomenology of the body will really get mind-fucked as hell.

I'm just concerned what Vincent meant by "I think, therefore you are." This cannot translate into cogito ergo sum so I can't follow up what the writer wants us to think of this particular (deviating) statement.

Or perhaps, this is a part-mistake on the subs.

No, don't ever, not with this series. You can force yourself on stuffs such as gore and edge, but never with philosophy. Because you know, philosophizing comes natural in every human beings, and so is contemplation. Don't force, it will live inside you if you let it to. :D

I thought that was very well-executed, probably one of the most memorable and psychological episodes of anime I have witnessed. This series has been like that all the way through, very well-done.

Jeez, what a mindfunked episode. I was just about to rage when I thought it was a fast forward to the future without explaining how they got to the dome and why Rel bretrayed Vince.

So glad it was a dream.

I. LOVED. THIS. I adore how all this is portrayed in a cartoon. I'm not saying I get the whole point, but these episodes are absolutely amazing. For now, episode 15 aside, this anime could well be a masterpiece for me. This is the first time I feel this way. I hope something will be explained about that TV show episode (I'll look up for someone's explanation eventually) because I may have just found a marvel. Wait and see.

Uncontestably 5/5.

I'm just gonna be honest. I don't like Re-L, she does seem like she would back stab Vincent & Pino. Was this a dream or the other proxy showing him what will happen? Amazing episode!!

Let me try to reconstruct this episode...

So, at the end of the episode, we saw Vincent was about to fall asleep while he was driving the rabbit. And because of that, as he's about to fall asleep, his consciousness level seems to go down as well. And just like a proxy invaded Pino's consciousness on the episode 19, a proxy named Swan just entered Vincent's consciousness so that Vincent's consciousness is Re-l's sub-conscious. And he can manipulate Re-l's consciousness to Vincent's, drawing the line of what is real and what is not according to Vincent's mind.

If that's too hard to understand (like I do as well), let's imagine that we're a ghost, just like Danny Phantom from Nickelodeon, and we try to go to that one person's body just to control that person's main consciousness, at some point, the person's main conscious is struggling to fight against your will to control that person's main conscious. And as you completely control that person's consciousness, that person is remained asleep for as long as you're still in that person's body.

Also, because of the Proxy's manipulation, that Proxy can control anything because he's the god of the alternate universe. Meaning, He can messed up some people's mind by invading the person's mind and then try to take advantage what he wants to imagine to make it real instead.

So, with that being said... FUCK THIS EPISODE... IT'S FUCKING MINDBLOWING AS FUCK!
If God exists, then he should try extending my deadline right now!

I...I don't think that's how the subconscious works. I don't think you can create a split personality just like that, but...uh...I guess I'll go with it for now. Honestly, this multilayered character analysis, as well as its perceptions of reality, is what I expected Ergo Proxy to be about, and while I question many aspects of the episode, particularly this anime's persistent reliance on dreams and hallucinations, I did enjoy the imagery presented. Still...was that all inconsequential?

Gekido said:
This episode happens within Vincent’s mind. Nah, it isn’t the ability of a new Proxy (unlike in Smile Land).

The first pendant.
Worn by Vincent himself (not Re-l). A prevalent part of this episode features Vincent projecting his worst fears:
- Fear of being betrayed by Re-l, and having to kill her as a result (self explanatory).
- Fear of losing himself. He was repeatedly told that he was simply a figment of Re-l’s imagination, and having his very existence refused. This only worsened when he was told to show Re-l his past, since his lack of memories is the exact reason why he questioned his own existence in the first place.

The second pendant.
Worn by Swan, who is the representation of Monad Proxy within Vincent’s psyche. Why do I say this? Let’s review what we already know:
- We know that Ergo Proxy (Death) and Monad Proxy (Life) were lovers, from Vincent’s encounter with the representative of Light.
- 22:20 onwards… “I can’t stand it”, “No matter what, I can’t take this off”, “I hate men who smell of other women”. Someone who is endlessly bound to Ergo Proxy - I can’t imagine anyone else other than Monad Proxy.

Re-Lity ... lol

For a second I thought it was another proxy messing around with Vincent alone like with the doppelgangers and smile land.
Turns out it was going on inside his mind, that's to be expected when you're a human and proxy at the same time.

Well, i must say this episode beats NGE for being the most mind**** thing i've ever seen, but some people above already gave their interpretion nicely so i guess i don't really have problem with it. The execution is neat, pacing is somewhat nice, overall this is a decent episode.

"I don't like men who smell of other women." This implies that Swan is jealous, that she knew Vincent before all this. It could also just be something he made up, of course.

For me, who has watched Ergo Proxy first time, this episode reminded me episode 19, the episode where Pino was in Smile Land and how the other proxy warned her not to come. Swan was like a Will B. Good and showed to Vincent, what will happen, when they come back to Romdeau.

But I'm quite sure that idea will be demolished within the next episodes.

what a scary disorder this ep refers to :O but interesting~

probably inspired by some real people with Dissociative Identity Disorder who introject other people into their minds... it really happens and it can be a pain when someone introjects the very source of their trauma! Like when you have an abusive father and ends up developing a version of him inside your own mind...
