Very much enjoyed the manga, but the ending... It is like they said "Hey! Lets take all the character development, the main focus/theme of father-daughter relationship, and the morals and bonds shared within Usagi Drop, and chuck it out the window." I thought there was good development between Daikichi and Yukari. But that ending rather fast and unexpected. Also, it is why did the whole manga not even hint, at least for me, at the fact Daikichi and Rin not being related! Only to bring it up when Rin loves Daikichi. I have a lot of more opinions about this ending, but in the long run, I was lost on this manga after the 10 year timeskip. Many of the character to me felt too alien, too much filler information to be known, and just out of character things and changing from Daikichi's perspective more into Rin's. I thought it took away from the mysteriousness of the character. Things just ending up concluding very badly, and rushed. |

OMG WHY! I just marathoned the anime and honestly, it was the sweetest story I've seen in ages. I actually gave it a 10! I hardly ever give away 10s but I really could not find a negative thing to say about the anime. It was beautiful. It was perfect. Started the manga straight after, and alright.....the 10 year time skip caught me off guard. Daichiki became a supporting character and this turned into a high school drama. Whatever. I was still sticking with it. Oh boy, then came the uhh...'plot twists' AKA massive ass-pulls. And then the ending. Jesus fking Christ. This would be fine for a crappy hentai plot but I did not expect this from such a promising series. I'm utterly disappointed and just plain pissed off. This guy from another site summed up my feelings PERFECTLY! Kudos - whoever you are! I feared this ending possibly coming on from issue one because that is honestly the taboo of manga. Throwing in a shocker for shock value is only the MOST common thing to do in any given plot design in today's dramas. But when the plot developed in the first half, I thought we were safely in a zone where the father-daughter dynamic was set-up as a central plot device. You can say what you want about the story at the end, but in removing that device, the story was convoluted and it's value as an aesthetic and artistic work was taken down dramatically. And personally, I was so happy all the way to the end of the first half to find an anime that DIDN'T follow the before-stated taboo; instead it was honest in its approach to the slice-of-life drama that it presented within the unique family-friendly dynamic that it offered. THAT was what made it unique. As far as I'm concerned, the problem with the ending wasn't that it was too "different" or "just plain wrong" in the plot twist. It's that the author sold out completely for that ending and in doing so threw away what otherwise was a unique and beautiful story about something that was very dear to me personally. Anyone that says that their love was a real thing and can support it doesn't have a realistic mindset of how family dynamics work. If that ending happened in real life, it would be cause for psychological evaluation of Rin for developing an obvious electra complex which is unhealthy to mental stability under EVERY clinical study ever done on the topic. And Daichi's character just does an unreal 360 in his acceptance of the proposal. The justification that he'll "do anything to make her happy" is ludacris in this context; she said she didn't want to take is name in part one and he got over it, he could have said no to her and she would have done the same-- which already draws another fallacy in the consistency of the character traits they possess. There's no excuse for the ending. It's just not realistic at all, and the realism it started with is what locked us all into following it. It's a tragedy, truly... Perhaps I'll watch the anime in hopes of better ending, but for now, I walk away totally disheartened over the whole ordeal of the time that I invested into it. I agree with this quote whole-heartedly. I hope the mangaka was swarmed with hate mail from both fans and actual parents/adopted parents alike and was forced to make a public apology for this monstrosity of an ending. I'm really glad to see that the most voted option is "Hated it'. I too regret reading it. I was warned too, that something 'unsafe' happened, but my curiosity got the better of me. |

Oh god ... Are you trying to tell me that Rin marries Daikichi in the end of the manga? O.O I decided to read the manga after watching the anime, but soon gave up because the whole timeskip idea just felt weird for a series like this one ( i read like 2 or 3 timeskip chapters )... And I'm so glad that i did ... seriously ... 1/5 Sickening! |

Much as has been stated earlier, the 1st time jump was a large shock to me, but I was willing to let it slide and lump the after-jump as a sequel. Then when the premonitions of her going for Daisuke started to appear I was rather disheartened and reminded of the absurdity of it much like in Otaku no Musume-san with landlady. Then when the whole "he was not the father" thing was dropped I lost the remaining optimism I had for the series. That whole deus ex machina was expected, but I started laughing when I read it. I have to say that I wish I had stopped reading before the time-jump. Even though that part has been done several times before, if not dozens; the latter part has been beating the non-moving horse for a decade. I'm still gonna trudge through the rest just to finish the series off, but I'm not holding much hope for anything really spectacular to happen "To be ignorant and to be deceived are two different things. To be ignorant is to be a slave of the world. To be deceived is to be the slave of another man. The question will always be: Why, when all men are ignorant, and therefore already slaves, does this latter slavery sting us so?" ~ R. Scott Baker |

Hi there, I just wanted to put in my piece as a psychologist. Brains do not change. They do not adapt to change well. Daikichi going from a father to a lover is a very, very disturbing idea, because brain-wise, the neurological pathways he has built in ten years of parenting will still be there. The times she wet the bed. The times he had to take her to the bathroom because she was scared. How small she used to be. How many things he taught her. It is often possible for a young woman to have affection for hr male guardian, however, this is usually fleeting. Daikichi should have said no, gently but firmly. They have both built up neurological pathways which will conflict horribly in a romantic relationship. So please, nobody else post sillyness about how "Incest isn't a bad thing as long as it's not blood related" because to be honest that's completely wrong. Conflicting neurological pathways cause stress and depression. From what we've learned, Daikichi will always see Rin as his daughter until he dies, just as she sees him as her protector and father figure. Incest is not a "Moral Gray Area" - there are reasons people feel sickened and offended by it. Also, to whomever said "This sort of thing happens in manga, if you don't like it, don't read it!" So for five volumes - more, actually - we see a strong, realistic father-daughter relationship. And then in the end we get slammed with psychological incest, and you're only response is "Don't read manga"? Plenty of manga don't have incest or pedophilia. When I read five volumes of something like Yotsuba, I get comfortable with the way it is written and what it is about. If Yotsuba suddenly became a Hentai, or there was a time-skip and suddenly Yotsuba decides to sleep with Jumbo, I would also be angry. As I said at the start, humans do not adapt to change well, and springing this ending was a huge disservice by the Mangaka. |

People parroting this "sickening" line have to relax. People are acting like Rin's the victim lol, are you kidding me? She is in complete control and got everything she wanted. They may have had a father-daughter relationship, but ever since she rejected taking his name (ironic isn't it?) when she was six, they've usually appeared like an older guardian who treated Rin with a lot of respect and gave her a choice in everything, and a girl/young woman who took care of the house, tended to and cared for Daikichi. Neither of them can see a life without the other, and it mentally and physically pains them to imagine an alternate life. And this didn't come exactly out of nowhere. The first "proper" hint was in chapter 38 I believe, when a few frames showed her being upset about another person caring for Daikichi. Then her school gets her thinking about her future, Reina-chan starts talking abou their fathers, they continuously show her disinterest in boys her age, with the exception of Kouki. And that idiot blew a number of occasions, eventually making her shift focus from what might have been desire. Then the idea of Dakichi remarrying comes up, and she gets even more upset. She can't imagine another woman taking her place in that household. In meeting her mom, she realizes how much Daikichi gave up to raise her so beautifully, and she begins to desire to reciprocate. She may have been "attracted" to Daikichi for a long time, only coming to the realization upon getting older and being made to think about the future, and what she wants. Through their interactions, I always felt like he was watching over her as a father, but there were moments that reminded me that he really wasn't, and looking back her refusal to take his name is one of the highlights. "You're not my father, you're Daikichi!" Daikichis wish came true in that Rin found total happiness, and hers obviously came true too. Also, I thought this would be intriguing to some people, read the age range where this applies, apparently it ends at six years, precisely when they met each other. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westermarck_effect Also, this is a picture, it's relevant but it's a little noogie to people who don't like the pairing lol. http://chrisman1991.deviantart.com/art/Usagi-Drop-by-echo24-from-zerochan-net-334657024 Modified by Nyanks, 03-13-13, 3:54 PM |

This was brilliantly said earlier by another: "I loved the ending! It was pure entertainment for me. Especially with Rin basically declaring that she intends to have sex with him, because she wants to bear his child in the future. She opened up her bedroom and flashed her bedroom eyes his way. Daiki cried because he knew there was no way he could change Rin's mind and she was probably going to sex him that night as soon as he turned the lights off. It's still a bit of an open ending leaving me to a few of my own conclusions. 1) Daikichi hangs himself because he can't live with the idea of nailing and impregnating a woman that he sees as his daughter. 2) Daikichi continues to stall and put marriage off causing Rin to lose interest and move on to someone else. It would be ideal for Daikichi, but probably not likely. 3) Daikichi decides to roll with it. After all, it wasn't like women were beating down his door to get to him while he was raising Rin and this may be his only opportunity before he dies." I think he would definitely roll with it. In all this whole long manga I don't recall Daichi ever having sex with anyone. There are hints in the story that he had decided, maybe as early as high school, that women would never like him, and then had just gave up trying. The had to be agonizing---agonizing so very often, over all those many years! Now after all that hopelessness here comes one former-girl, now-woman, who wants you, when in your whole adult life no other woman seemed to. I can't see how he could say no. And as for why this scandalous development is in the story at all: I've noticed that Japanese mangaka like to put lots and lots of echhi stuff in their stories, and quite often it's shocking ecchi stuff. They spice up the story and make it more saleable that way. These people are in a business, after all. .... I don't know why the mangaka did that dumb time skip. Even with that mistake, I found this to be an excellent manga overall. Modified by cecropiamoth, 04-12-13, 3:11 PM |
