THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Death by rats = DISGUSTING.

Although the monologue about self-fulfilling prophecy was interesting, turning a fictional narrative into a documentary isnt very entertaining and breaks the tempo. A lot of anime fans probably dont notice because they're too busy reading subs, but there are a lot of instances in anime where the story essentially stops and turns into a montage of slow pans of inanimate objects, or of locations, while a voice over just rambles endlessly on, providing exposition, and then afterwards in the episode thread its praised for finally "explaining the story" or "providing character development".

Anime writers = STOP IT.

I disagree with you. I think the exposition by the narrator tied the ghost story to the series as a whole pretty well, and served to make the "curse" much more interesting and real than skipping it. Same goes for the "montage of inanimate objects and locations" - it contrasts sharply with the animation and tends to bring the viewer back to reality. If nothing else, it was original. Anime writers = DON'T STOP IT.

So, the curse continues because viewers want it to. Very interesting idea. I was expecting some sort of hokey supernatural explanation, but that was a pleasant surprise.

The exposition tied it well, the method of the exposition sucked donkey balls. It is possible to convey all that information, and 'bring the viewer to reality' without a very cheap and lazy monoglogue/montage. I'd like to watch anime, not a crusty old man talk for 15 minutes while looking at shitty encoded buildings and crowds. Thanks.

This happens in shitty Otogizoushi too, how are these people not embarrased to have their names attached to these episodes?

I've always been in love with Japanese horror stories mostly because of the narration style and symbolism used (best example that comes to mind is "Kaidan" or in anime "Mononoke") In a way you can say the way you tell the story is more important than the story itself. This story had the potential of becoming a very interesting and spine chilling horror story but in my opinion the story telling was not good enough. These type of Japanese stories need to go on a very slow pace , building some atmosphere for the final blow but too many things kept happening and the element of suspense was totally ignored. I hope the other two stories have better plots and direction.

Agreed. Although I like that they ATTEMPTED to 'break the 4th wall,' it was not done well enough. Lets hope they improve next arc...

That was boring. There was nothing scary at all. Also, at the part where the guy's wife stabbed the demon lady, I found the guy's reaction strange. He straightaway ran to ask the demon lady if she was alright. Logically he should be angry at his wife and push her aside or something. He didn't even do that after checking on the demon.

I agree.

...*Yawn*

I only see typical revenge death scenes.

Ironically, it was this last episode that was the only one that succeeded in pulling me in on any level. The rest of it, like others in this thread have already stated, was a very under developed revenge plot line and just random murders over and over. The possibility of the curse existing because of people wanting it to is so much more interesting than the actual story.

That was scarry enough to make up for the whole story.

I feel like the narration was out of place too. Other than that, I really liked this ark. I'm kinda sad nobody else was pulled into it, because I enjoyed it immensely and it looks like you all missed out on the experience I had.

So, am I cursed now ? ;)
Otherwise, I heard polish legend about king Popiel (?), who was eaten by mice, so it's quite similar to Iemon's death. ^^

I felt this way too. The last episode of the story really pulled me in and actually scared me a little. I thought this ep was brilliant. The rest, eh, not so much.

The death by rats scene was probably the best one this episode had - it was the closest thing to a creepy moment so far. Anyway, I felt the underlying story was interesting because I like revenge stories; but the way it was presented here was just really generic. Uninteresting characters and poor execution really made this arc mediocre which is too bad because I have the feeling it could have been a lot better.

This arc was nothing extraordinary, though the idea of a "curse" does feel creepy. I do agree with the idea that the audience is the reason for the curse is more interesting. Maybe because some of the things that happen in real life occur because people believe it will happen?

The death by rats reminds me of Dishonered. Though it should be the other way around since this story has existed longer than Dishonered has.
