i can see why you'd feel that way about Inception, even if i don't necissarily agree. tbh, for me, the love story kind of humanized what could have been just a cold, action, thriller without heart and awesome special effects. but maybe they did lay it on a little thick at times, so i see what you're saying.

as far as the Pirates...was gonna say trilogy but i can't anymore...bahh, movies...it just seemed to me that the sequels (and i haven't seen the latest, mind you) just fed off the first and didn't carve it's own path.
the best sequels stand out in their own right as well as build upon the original. Indiana and the Last Crusade, The Dark Knight, Godfather 2, and Karate Kid 2 & 3 come to mind. They stood on their own as great movies rather than just feasting on what came before.
Kidding about the Karate Kid sequels btw...utter garbage. XP

My favorite sequel film ever has to be Aliens. I've heard a few people that just couldn't stand it, but really, I loved it. (The crap they sneaked in as 3 and 4 though... not going there.)
I agree with all of those you listed, also, though somehow I've missed seeing Karate Kid 2 & 3. *shrug* Odd seeing how many movies I own... I'll have to take pictures of our dvd collection, it's beyond huge.

i only buy movies now if i really enjoyed them or if they are cheap and i have heard good things. like i bought the remake of true grit having never seen it. it was like 15 dollars at walmart on bluray so i was like fuck it and bought it. and it was a good movie and this is by far my most memorable part of the movie. i couldnt find a clip but its when she goes to her fathers body and the undertaker is infatuated with her kissing her fathers body, i thought it was hilarious. If you would like to kiss the body that would be ok.

I saw Karate Kid 2 in the movie theater back when I was a kid. I'm sure liked it, but I didn't really have much taste as a kid. Pretty much anything with action would suffice

For me the romance looked too cliche and I didn't actually "buy" the emotions that they tried to convey. I'm an individual that first counts emotions in any form of art and then anything else. I had even won a vidding award for best emotional vidder when I was in youtube. I'm not trying to brag, but trying to say that emotions for me is EVERYTHING. But I felt this film wasn't really so emotional to the core. It was more of a shallow thing, that tried to look deep. Some kid shows can convey more emotion that this movie. But anway, I don't like being so harsh, although I usually express myself like that in real life about what I believe.

I totally agree about Pirates though. The other movies where nowhere near the first one.
Btw was Karate Kid 2 with Hillary Swank as a kid? Anyway, Karate Kid 1 was EPIC in every sense. But since I don't remember the rest, I'm sure you are right! :P

i will have to watch it again with that in mind. i think maybe i was too caught up with the concept (which i loved) and the epic nature of it to catch onto as much of what you're saying. i value emotion in films as well, and i did see what you were saying to a certain extent, but maybe it'll take a second viewing to take hold.

the Karate Kid with Hillary Swank was actually The Next Karate Kid, the 4th installment...and yeah just as bad as the 2nd and 3rd, for me. the 2nd was Daniel-san and Mr. Miyagi going to Okinawa and "confronting his past" blah blah blah...it was bad. the 3rd was coming back and Daniel turning to the "dark side" of martial arts, aka the Cobra Kai style. bad as well.

I don't say there is right or wrong when experiencing a movie, so please don't take my words as I'm trying to dictate how you should feel about the movie. It's just the way I felt when I saw it. I was expecting more as a whole and that part totally ruined it for me. As well as some other typical overdramatic cliche. But I must admit the effects and the whole concept were STUNNING.

oh I'll go watch the rest now, just for the lols! :P
I like how you state your opinion though, very discreet like mine! xD hahaha

oh i understand totally, of course. i'm just saying i value other's opinions when it comes to such things and it's good to get other perspectives (esp those who you respect). i may watch it again and completely disagree with you. but i want to watch with an open mind to other viewpoints because it's enriching. no need to see things stuck in a box.

and yeah i guess i don't mince words when it comes to how i feel about those. for those who loooove those two sequels, my apologies for tramping on your favorite movies =p

Then humbly arigatou gozaimasu! ^.^ I feel the same way about your opinion!
So, I might just go watch it again too! :P Thing is although I like Mariyon who played Di Caprio's husband, I just couldn't see her fit in that part. I didn't see any chemistry, so maybe that's an additional reason that made me dislike that part of the movie.

Haha I don't think there could be anyone here that regards those sequels as favs, but if there is, then it's ok I guess! xD

well as far as the relationship between Di Caprio and his wife...i think maybe it was supposed to be that way kinda...because of what was going on...without giving anything away (and spoiler buttons don't work because everyone clicks them anyways, esp in this club.....except for me =D ), but maybe they were supposed to be distant because of that. idk, like i said i'll watch it again at some point, with that in mind.

All this talk about Karate Kid spurred a weird dream last night. I dreamed that I was watching karate kid, but there were different scenes than the ones from the actual movie. For example, there was a scene where they were fighting eachother whilst atop jetskis.

I thought of some other movies that I like, plus this will bump this topic up for the newbies.

I like period pieces set in Europe set before 1920. So that can be anything from Greeks and Romans, Braveheart, Shakespeare, all the up to beginning of 20th century.

I also like Jackie Chan movies. Rush hour, Rumble in the Bronx, and The Forbidden Kingdom. Other noteworthy martial arts movies include Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, and anything with Stephen Segall (kidding about the last one)

I liked the book, but I don't know if I'll watch the movie. Maybe I watch movies 6, 7a, and 7b in a few years when I've forgotten more of the plot.
