I couldn't agree more.
The initial premisse with 2 sides each thinking to know best what's good for humanity, and both not shunning to get their hands dirty was interesting. But than they had to introduce the obligatory villain, and for me that cheapened the story considerably. We're led to dislike the Fractale system based on that 1 guy's actions, while they've failed to show what harm the system does on a personal basis.

I think DmonHiro is pretty much right on this. It is pretty clear that the father hadn't raped Phryne yet(since it would be pointless in doing so because they need a virgin girl to be the key) but since she was born from the capsule she has been having her body check up constantly by him(this was mention many times lately during the show and also 2 times in this episode).

@Char0079: I don't really think that you need such a "classic sign" to be your reference here. Just think about if he could do what he was doing in this episode to Phryne then don't you think something like this could have happened countless times before this?

I admit that they really know how to make a disgusting people doing disgusting thing.

And who else thought that those old women that working in the temple are also Phryne too?

The only reasoning I had for her maybe not having been abused was that the temple priestesses were protective, but then I remembered that she said she had been raised at the laboratory, which kind of nullifies that a bit. Either way, I'm not really invested enough in her as a character to care. We're on episode 10, and she wasn't in a couple of episodes. That means I care about as much as anyone can care in the span of 8 episodes (basically I want her and Clain to be together, but not much else). Abused or not, it isn't going to matter a whole lot after episode 11, if that makes any sense. As the guy in charge of keeping the clone machines going, I guess Barott probably abused his way through a generation or two of Phryne's. That's obviously terrible, but unless every generation of guys in charge of the laboratory is a predator, it doesn't really reflect poorly on Fractale as much as it does on human society (imagine all the rape that would happen if Fractale went down, for instance)

I definitely think the temple priestesses are all Phryne. The more I think about it, the more I realize that all of the temple guards look the same as well. Maybe they are all Barrot? Maybe he is just a clone himself (albeit one that is a little nutty in the head, like Phryne's older sister), who knows. Fractale could be growing its own support staff I guess (using one man, and one woman as a mold. Almost Adam and Eve style), but obviously the question of why the heck they need a virgin comes back into play, and why that particular Phryne is special when they are all exactly identical genetically.

Now that I think about it...Barrot is probably a virgin as well. I wonder if that is supposed to be one more knock on Otaku culture (that virginity has turned them into sex crazy monsters, that consume all forms of odd pornography)

@Krimson - The creator is famous in Japan for writing a book that looked (rather unfavorably if memory serves) at otaku culture. I'd read that the anime was supposed to borrow pretty heavily from the themes in that book (that Otaku are becoming too detached from reality, and that sort of thing). I think the show suffered because of that, and kind of got caught up in itself a little bit too much.

I still have mixed feelings about this show, the fact the Phryne might be abused is something far to serious, Fractale has a bit of identity crisis, on one hand they try to be frivolous and even childlike, on the other hand they add those grime elements. It all feels a bit schizophrenic to me.

Is the manga any better?

I hope the manga goes into waay more detail than the anime. I hope this anime is compressed like the Nausica anime was compressed, and that theres actually alot more to it.

I wouldnt say an identity crisis, but maybe this show is one of those "haha fooled you" shows. like "Higurashi" without that much gore.

I will drop my rating for this show, even though i enjoyed it until now. i think very bad move from authors and before someone say its unpredictable or un-cliched something, no its not. suddenly turning all plot hatred towards that old pervert is just worst, like some kind of cheap hentai plot. abuse the girl and get power/help for ...... device/fight. so that what old pervert was going to do in last episode when nessa came and destroyed everything.

Poor Phryne, her destiny is dirty and sad, like her sister, but I don't understand why Nessa is guilty... probably there is a last revelation about Nessa and her role in fractale system....

I guessed purple was another incarnation but not that she hated humanity for what it made her and that's why she wanted to keep Fractale and that she would try to kill Phryne! At least she didn't.

They saved Nessa.

The end was disgusting! I can't believe that guy.

Why do they have to ruin amazing stories with disgusting perverted characters like this?! This show could have been nearly perfect (due to some plot holes and such), but no, there should always be that one old geezer, and for what? Do people enjoy this? Couldn't the writers think of anything else or is it that they put all their brains into the actual story (because it's awesome, really) and didn't have any braincells left for this character..? It's not even fanservice, it's just plain disgusting

I'm sorry but I'm really pissed off

To think that this was made in 2011...
