Spotlight Manga: Detroit Metal City MAL Manga Information Page: Detroit Metal City MAL Score - 8.29 (by 1539 users) Ranked - #246 Popularity - #365 For the next week I would like to have a discussion about the manga that focuses on the key elements that we here on MAL use to critically rate a manga: Art, Characters, Story, and Enjoyment. I would like everyone to approach this thread as if you were going to write a review and structure your initial post like this: Art - insert rating Characters - insert rating Story - insert rating Enjoyment - insert rating Art - discuss any pros and cons of the art styling used in the series, try to include some specifics. Character - describe any of the things you liked or didn't care for in regards to specific characters in the series etc... If you are having trouble writing up a review or coming up with specific pros and cons, please don't worry. Just do the best you can with it and if you can only write two or three sentences about any of the 4 elements then that's OK. Not everyone here is currently at a level which will allow them to articulate their thoughts and opinions. After your initial post is made you can feel free to civilly discuss issues of contention. I am sure there will be many opinions expressed here that some of us will disagree upon and criticise and it is for that reason that this entire club exists. So I hope everyone has fun and I am really looking forward to seeing how this discussion will develop. | The anime just about covered the best of DMC, and the length was just nice. However, the manga gets repetitive as the jokes are recycled. Other comedies like Gintama are at least able to retain their freshness by offering new stuff to surprise the reader all the time. It's still good but having inducted the anime is quite sufficient IMO. I'm voting no. Note: I've only read up to where the scanlations stopped (ie. ch 84). |
| I don't think I can contribute here as I haven't read the manga yet, but I just have to point out Hattori_Hanzo just tackled my overall concern with this manga. For me, one of the strength of the anime is, quite oddly, its brevity. I usually have problems with comedy shows when they overextend; more often than not, I found them really repetitive when they get on the second season or something. And that is why I can't get myself to read this, as it may spoil the fun that I had with the OVA. Anyway, I'd like to hear more from others who have read this, as I'm curious on what it has to offer. |

| Most comedies manga over stay their welcome, DMC is not an exception. The novelty, 'rape jokes' to be exact, wears out eventually. It's always about Negishi struggling with his alter-ego. Don't get me wrong though, this was a creative attempt and one of the best mistaken identity comedy manga I have read. Unfortunately, it couldn't reach its full potential like the anime did.What's good about the anime was the hilarious yet fitting contrast between the OP / ED, something that the manga can't offer. |
