I swear I started a thread here about books ages ago, but I can't for the life of me find it. Maybe I always meant to do it but never did, or it exists and is so obvious that you are all pointing and laughing at me now.

Anyway, as you may recall, when my computer died about a year and a half ago, I was forced to use my local Library to access the Internet, and while there I re-discovered my love of reading. Now I'm getting through two to three books a month. my favorite genres are Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Historical fiction, but I'm open to many other things as well.

I just finished Brightness Reef by David Brin and was very surprised to find out that unlike the rest of his stand-alone Uplift series books, this one is the first part of a trilogy. Reading the afterward, it seems like he surprised himself with that too. If you've read his previous Uplift series books, I recommend this as being of equal quality to Startide Rising and The Uplift War.

Because I was surprised by the trilogy structure, up next is not the sequel but instead The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi. And after that there is a new Bernard Cornwell novel called The Fort about a battle that took place in Maine during the American Revolution. Then I will probably get back to the Brin series.

The last book I read was Just After Sunset by Stephen King. That was over a year ago. I've been reading manga like a manic! LOL!!

Accipiter, all I can say is prepare to be frustrated. That trilogy is one of my favorites as well, but it was a really hard read, which is probably why it's one of my favorites.

Mr. King and I have a mutual understanding - he continues to write crap and I continue to not read him. It works to our mutual benefit in that neither of us cares (read "gives a ****) what the other is doing. My opinion of Mr. King is that he may possibly be a great replacement for Mr. Bradbury in that neither of them can write a novel worth a damn, yet both of them write excellent short stories and novellas. And I like Ray Bradbury's writing as long as he stays under 30 - 50 k-words. When he goes beyond that he tends to become repetitive and dull. Unfortunately for Mr. King's sake, Ray Bradbury is still very much alive and probably won't give up his torch until he passes away.

I'm currently working my way back through Alan Dean Foster's Commonwealth universe with "Pip & Flinx" and the rest of his cast. It's been a fun romp through the universe as seen through the eyes of an orphaned ex-slave and his flying snake. Occasionally if the going gets a little rough, I'll drop in on John Ringo's Aldenata and Erik Flint's 1632 universes for some ass-kicking fun with the occasional side trip into either David Weber's Honor-verse or John Maxim's Bannerman series. After I get done with the Commonwealth, I'm going to pick up with Kenneth Robeson's "Doc Savage" series again (someone was nice enough to torrent most of that and a whole of others in electronic format to which I can only say "Thank You, Nice Person").

Well, I'm currently reading The Complete Sherlock Holmes on my Barnes & Noble nook™ e-reader. Utterly fascinating stuff! ^_^

Orlah,

Check #ebooks on irc.irchighway.net or #bookz on irc.undernet.org if that torrent has any gaps in it.

The Windup Girl was very good. It's the first time I've read any "biopunk," whatever that is. I guess you can put "after" anything now and call it a new genre. Some nice anime themes going on in it too. It would actually make a good anime in fact. Better than most in fact since the story doesn't fall apart in the third act.

I got sidetracked before getting back to the Uplift trilogy. The Heroes by Joe Abercrombie. It's kind of like a dumbed down fantasy Bernard Cornwell novel. Manly men (and manly women) doing Manly things with swords and sorcery. Kind of fun light reading if you don't mind all the blatant fantasy tropes.

With stores like Borders closing down a bunch of their shops, I'm wondering if people are still reading books as much as they used to these days? Or are they just using Amazon and Costco?

I’m so sad that Borders is gone! (I loved shopping at Borders!) Barnes and Nobles sucks and I won’t shop there unless if I absolutely have too. From now on I will be getting my books from Amazon or the publisher itself.

Right now I’m re-reading New Moon by: Stephenie Meyer along with my college text books.

I'm currently re-reading the House of Night series. The latest book in the series was released Oct 25, but until I get my first paycheck, I don't have the money to buy it. Soooo... I'm re-reading the entire series (8 books so far) until I can afford to buy Destined, the 9th book in the series. WOOT!!

I quit reading the "Ashes" series around #14 or 15. Just couldn't take the series any more. Fixin' to do the same with the "Deathlands" series supposedly written by James Axler. I thought they were pretty good books when I first read them, but then I started shooting pistol competitively and after firing many of the calibers used in the books and now re-reading the series, have decided that the "author" has either never fired a gun in his life or has never spent any time researching the final effects of the various rounds of ammo being used. Oh well, what can you expect from one of the house names from Harlequin Enterprises (which I did not know until recently or I would have never gotten past the first book).

Currently reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls. It's a prequel to the original PP and Z as Elizabeth and the rest of the Bennet sisters learn how to become zombie slayers. It's been a hoot so far!

Nice! Do you need to know a lot about P&P to appreciate it? I haven't read that since high school.

Nahhh! I don't think so! I never read Pride and Prejudice at all. A graphic novel of PP and Z came out shortly after the novel, and rumor has it that it's been optioned by Hollywood for a movie treatment.

Finally got my first check and was able to buy the latest book in the House of Night series, "Destined." OMG, what a read. The saga continues. (I finished the book in 2 nights... after working). I LOVE THIS SERIES.

Another book I'm excited about (which will be purchased next week) is the final installment of the Christopher Paolini's Eragon series, Inheritance. It's been so long since the release of the last book, that I should probably read them all again. Unfortunately, however, I don't own those books anymore. But I'm sure it will all come back to me as I start to read Inheritance. Sooooo excited.

Jane Bites Back by Michael Thomas Ford which features THE Jane Austen as a modern day vampire who runs a bookstore in a sleepy upstate New York small town while trying to get a new novel published. So far, it's been good, goofy stuff! ^_^

I just finished re-reading Twilight and now I am re-reading New Moon. Maybe I will also start re-reading the Harry Potter series after I finish re-reading the Twilight Saga.
