According to the official web diary, the President of ufotable Kondo Hikaru said the Blu-ray box sets of Kara no Kyoukai have sold out in the US. Before the release, one of the local distributers asserted that the more than $300 price was ridiculously high in the US and that nobody would purchase it. Kondo didn't disclose how many sets have been sold, but he had a toast with the local buyers, who were also astonished at the sales. Kondo is visiting San Francisco to attend the screening of Kara no Kyoukai.

If only that were true. A lot of people don't have enough for this box set.

I would have bought it but I'm one that lacks $300 to blow on a box set. :( And too bad it's not dubbed. Oh well. :P

I'm very happy that it sold out! :) It's always nice to hear that there are still people willing to support the industry. :)

I don't want to see anime fans complain about DVDs being expensive after this. If you can afford a $300 boxset, you can surely afford $30 for a series you like!

We will complain as much as we want, just because there are rich people who can afford it doesn't mean we can all afford it.

No they aren't. Money isn't the reason why it's the super power, otherwise it wouldn't be right now.

not really. The U.S.A right now is in a huge debt. The rich just gets richer and the poor gets poorer.

Iunno man. They are nearly 600 trillion dollars in debt to China. And China is now fucking around with the exchange rate because of it.

Wow dude, are you wrong. America is 17 trillion dollars in debt right now. In fact, our country practically belongs to China, LOL.

But anyways, back to the topic. Whoa am I surprised that those box sets actually sold, let alone sold out! :O

I wonder how many of them were from people who pre-ordered it and then couldn't back out when they realized they were terrible Q-TEC upscales?

Good thing I didn't buy this...I would be incredibly disappointed in purchasing over 300 dollars worth of lousy upscales.

This is a rare case of me being happy I DID not like the movies as much as everyone else. If I had I'd be beating myself up over not buying this.

Oh, and it's more than $300 to everyone who keeps saying $300. If I remember correctly the retail price is actually $600.

One wonders what the Kara no Kyoukai print run was. If they printed like 150 sets, it wouldn't have been that hard to sell out.

Except most anime is not priced like that for comparable amounts of runtime. Considering that the going rate for new TV series releases these days is ~$60 (MSRP, before typical retailer markdowns) for 13 eps, the KnK set is roughly 3 times more expensive than the norm -- a clear outlier.

All your country are belong to us.

Anyway, that disproved many theories of anime industry dying because of piracy in NA. I bet more than 95% of the buyers have actually watched the movies as subtitled torrents firsthand.

If it wasn't this expensive and if I actually owned a Blu-ray...

Let me put up a manifesto

The fact that some Americans can afford to blow $300 on a bunch of DVDs while the rest of the population live in squalor just goes to show that the rich-poor divide is widening. Can we stand for this? Should we stand for this?

*cue fiery rhetoric about uprisings and a Marxist utopia*

But seriously, it's a serious problem when a rich-poor gap grows too wide. The Marxists would call for a revolution, the optimists would work harder in hopes to get richer and I would buy the damned DVD, create loads of bootleg copies and sell them for $150 each to widen the rich-poor gap

I thought this was priced at around $500 last time I checked? But $300 is still a bit much...There's got to be a gajillion extra content in order for that to be worth it.
