From the start I've felt like Oberstein was this cold bastard who just hated everything, and the thought of him having ill motives also crossed my mind several times... But now, it begins to feel more like he's the Mr. Snape of LOGH. The guy that noone understands, that has a tragic backstory or something, that cares deeply for everyone but expresses it in weird ways (or hides it)... He's a very interesting character to say the least.

Loved this episode, it showed some interesting parts of Reinhard. At first, the more symphatic side of him got to show, as he pretty much lost his mind thinking of the innocent lives he indirectly killed... And then him on Hilda... Finally! Can't wait to see how this progresses.

As for Hilda and Reinhard, GOLD. PURE GOLD. I've been waiting for something to finally kick off between them, but what a place to set the starting line. The inexperience on both sides is painstakingly clear and that makes it all the more awkwardly adorable. Hilda is a woman who hasn't thought about her maiden heart before whilst Reinhard never got to develop any sense of intimacy with a person beyond war camaraderie. Hilda's dad is a good man too, very understanding and didn't reject nor attempt to abuse this situation. And yes, super LOL @ his comment about their performance.

Me too I was waiting for that :p . I loled at Reinhard the most powerful man in the New Galatic Empire, for being this shy xD .
But it's ep 89 and we know that only 21 eps remain, not a lot :/

Someone has to take the blame, someone has to make statement that no one else dare to. Kudos to Oberstein for this one , no matter how much hatred is thrown at him, he won't be hesitant nor defend for himself, he's probably one of the strongest backbone that supports Reinhard.

Reinhard's having lot of trouble getting through the past, it was not entirely his fault anyway, Obersteins did a rather crazy move before Reinhard even knew it. Just as i thought this was gona be a very depressing episode, the rest of the show blew me away with laughter lol. You can be good at war and politics but when it comes to women hardly any man can triump, even the most powerful being in the universe XD.

BTW i think the show needs to be rated as R+ - Mild Nudity since "what happened" in this episode lol.

Oberstein pretty much spelled out his motivation in early episodes. He is basically one of the people who would have been executed for being "inferior" back when Goldenbaum dynasty was massacring billions, he seems to identify himself with the victims of the Goldenbaum dynasty and wants revenge for all of them, and to prevent something like that happening again, much like Reinhard does over a more personal grievance. He is someone who would fundamentally disagree with Stalin's "One death is a tragedy, million is a statistic." This is my view of Oberstein's motivations.

Now, it is interesting that, in this episode, his arguments regarding why he let Westerland happen are pretty similar to the usual central argument of the nuke use apologists IRL.

Interesting to get quoted more than a year after I wrote that, thanks :-)

Your thoughts were very interesting, it makes a lot of sense - although I don't remember the details of the series all that much. Also slightly off-topic, what's so bad with the saying "One death is a tragedy, million is a statistic." I'm not sure what Stalin meant with that, but as of how I interpret it... It sounds like a reasonable portrait of how we as a society look at death. Looking deep into a single death you see much tragedy, but looking at it from a bigger scale... deaths are just numbers in the statistics. I guess it depends on how you look at it. If you use such a saying to justify murder/homocide it's not very good of course... I might be floating way off without anyone/you getting my point but, whatever. Hope you're having fun rewatching LOGH :-)

I definitely forgot about Westerland...I reacted the same way as Reinhard when he heard that. Shocked that I'd forgotten that tragedy. It really hit the Kaiser hard to be reminded of Westerland, but he's not a coldhearted person who doesn't feel guilt and remorse from something he had the power to prevent. As for the "you will be punished" part, Reinhard had already acknowledged that earlier in the series iirc? Nevertheless, it was interesting to see Kesler notice that Reinhard's shoulders were slacking :( Makes you realize that even someone so "perfect" and powerful could have moments of weakness like this.

As for the rest of the episode. LMAOOOOO I really couldn't stop grinning and laughing after the one night stand. I honestly didn't expect them to do anything when Reinhard wanted Fraulein to keep him company. It did kinda of feel like it came out nowhere because Reinhard seems like someone who would never be sexually intimate with someone, but it did allow for one of the best comedy scene of all time, in a non-comedy series, lol. Who knew watching Reinhard being shy and awkward would be so hilarious. Also, Count Mariendorf's comment to himself wondering if the two did it well was uncalled for hhahhahahah

Great call back to Westerland. It him so strong because his best friend was against him for it.

I get the feeling Reinhard is incapable of being in love with anybody. Glad the proposal was postponed.

Kesler did a good job, good to have him back.

MVP: Oberstein was taking the blame.

Not Westerland, I knew that problem will have repercussion in the future
But not this far away

Oberstein kinda earned my respect, he knew fully well that it's going to bring him bad luck in the future, he just have so much hate from the others
But still the one really at fault is not them, but Braunschweig
He's the one launched the "nukes" afterall.. because the people "rebel" against him

Lol Reinhard, I thought after 88 episodes I've already seen all of his "faces"
And here I got slapped pretty hard xD

I wouldn't have expected that this episode would take such a lovely direction after the grim reminder of what happened on Westerland.

Oberstein taking the bullets as always, what a guy. Also more interesting characterisation of Reinhard.

Was it implied that Reinhard proposed to Mariendorf because he didn't want to repeat the Westerland mistake, or that's just my imagination? The theme of this episode seemed to be about indecisiveness after all.

If that's the case, then perhaps he wanted to do this a long time ago but he didn't dare. Perhaps due to his guilt, not unlike Yang.

I'm probably wrong, though.

God, I'm so glad Oberstein wasn't harmed as I was afraid he would be. It was a stellar performance of him to have assumed all the culpability for Westerland in such a swift manner.

What a beautiful episode. Not only for the incident at the memorial, which showed us that few things in this series happen at random, but the change of Reinhard's personality. This episode felt too real, too organic.

Indeed, Reinhard was severely punished for his sins at Westerland. As an indirect result of that, Siegfried Kircheis was killed. Kircheis' death is an incident that still resonates deeply in this series' core and Reinhard's heart.

Indeed, the Imperial Throne stands on top of a sea of blood, that's only natural for the seat of power. That's what makes people like Oberstein completely necessary for any strong government to exist, as someone must hard press for the ruler to take the most important decisions.

Regarding Oberstein, I hated him in his first appearances. I thought he was a sneaky bastard who would leech Reinhard out, and didn't trust him in the least. Nonetheless, I always acknowledged the necessity and precision of his remarks. Throughout the series, he managed to show his true genius and grew to be my favourite character, a grey eminence like no other. One could even say the weight of the Galactic Empire, at least on the political affairs, rests solely on Oberstein's shoulders. He is to politics what Reinhard is to the military.

It was very charming how did this special relationship of Hilda and Reinhard develop. When they showed him sleeping, he almost looked like a child. Talking about children, it was endearing to see Emil sleeping in the corridor. That's a show of loyalty like no other ever depicted, only surpassed by Kircheis' most noble sacrifice.

I couldn't help but loudly laugh at Reinhard's inexperience at love. That blushing face, spurring out "Count Mariendorf...". Who would think that man is the Kaiser of the Galactic Empire?

I do think Reinhard's sense of responsibility isn't the only reason he proposed to Hilda. After all, she has proven to be a capable replacement for Oberstein, and such, of Kircheis, as his top advisor. It's only natural for him to have developed some feeling of affection for her. I don't know if it's love, but he surely holds her in high esteem.

Aside from any abnormalities for the other side, I think the only person Reinhard could have truly loved was Kircheis, and that love was totally requited.

The proposal was, hands down, the funniest scene of the whole show. Both with Reinhard being such a blushing fresh non-virgin and the count calling out their provess.

More seriously though, 1) it was very endearing, 2) this episode just confirmed my previous suspicion that Reinhard is/was too busy with warmongering to fuck. What a man, what a character.

This was a wild and emotional one, certainly both ends of human emotions tend to meet each other. Both despair and grievance alongside love, be it pure and wholehearted or vain and meaningless.

This just might be what Reinhard needs, a reality check and the pursuit of his own happiness after having lost and being separate from those he cared most or respected in his life. Be it his family or his greatest rival and enemy.

one of the most weirdest episodes of reinhard lol.

first he had taken way back to what happened on westerland. which affected him immediately. though it all was oberstein's doing. in the end reinhard took advantage of that. the care he showed for that assassin was interesting enough they could make around it full episode.

but no, in the end it becomes the start of reinhard x marindof.
strange enough, i thought reinhard was pure gay lol. so it took me by surprise.
what i loved though is reinhard being totally himself in that proposal. though making me laugh hard on his blush face, it's totally fits reinhard being this "responsible" for his doing.
in the end it was confusing for marindof too, which i believe really loves reinhard. maybe not as normal women would love him, but in her own way.

with all that being said, i'm felling some quality drop since yang's death...

Well, that was an awkward ordeal, wasn’t it? Reinhard is really a man-child when it comes to everything non-related to war or administration. Hilda also seems unfamiliar with that matter. Let’s see how this relationship goes.

Liked the whole Westerland situation and Oberstein’s response to it.

Not much to say beyond that. 3/5.
