How to create an anime desktop

I want to create a custom desktop and a linkable picture to my MAL profile that encompasses my favourite shows and characters into one big image. I've seen it done on some well known users in the community but I'm not really sure how to create custom images like that. I'm not very good at this sort of artistic stuff but I do want to personalize my profile and my computer screen. Is there maybe a template I can use and insert renders into? Do I have to start from scratch? I was just wondering if someone could give me a bit of help here.

Try Gimp (which is free) or if you have them or willing to pay Paint Shop pro or Photoshop.
