Oh, the wait will be unbearable! I loved this episode to bits, probably the one I liked the most so far... well, apart from the Kei x Zakuro cute scenes in the previous ones. I felt really emotional during the scene when Enaga is killed right in front of Zakuro's mother's eyes. It was just too much for her to bear. And seeing her son treat her like the next second? And then having to give herself back to the village to protect her child? How sadder could it get? She became when of my favourite characters from this show with just this episode.

I hope shanimebib isn't right... I don't want the next episode to be the last one. Unless it's a really, really great one... or unless the 13th will focus on Kei x Zakuro as an item. I really want to see them together and I won't be happy with just one kiss.

I don't wait to wait another week! Good thing there's "my" Kuragehime on Thursday, otherwise the week would just be plain dull.

Yeah the flashback was done really well. I have to agree with another poster that the stabbing Enaga in front of her increased the emotions there. Convenient that they grabbed that scrape of paper and just so happened to be carrying it in the room XD

This episode was brilliant, it was sad and beautiful at the same time. The story of Zakuro's mother is finally revealed and didn't disappoint one bit. Tsukahane was so lovely. Omodaka is indeed a creepy bastard, betraying his own mother and even killing her.

Great episode! I really liked how they shook down everything and made the show much easier to understand while maintaining a certain depth of emotion! Characters were very beautifully illustrated and outgoing. (In terms of output) Now I can finally see some dramatic sparse in the show! Looking forward to the next!

Glad to finally good a good detailed explanation that explains the plot :D

Uber excited for next week, another quality show from J.C. Staff (with another Tsundere to add to the growing list of Tsundere characters they have). It'll be nice to see how the decrease in work load affects the quality of the remaining series (finish Zakuro + Milky Holmes, Continue Index 2 + Bakuman, Start only 1 new series: Can't remember name).

Loved every inch of this episode. It was perfect. Romance & tragedy were very well executed. *muah* overall.

TsukuhaneXEnaga were so cute <3 + T_T
So is that Tsukuhane's corpse or something?... didn't get that part.
KeiXZakuro is ahem..ahem...sort of sexy enough though Kei is really creepy....really how dark can a child get?

I wondered why Tsukuhane's voice sounded so lovely and guess what I found! She is none other than Ohara Sayaka a.k.a as the Ara~ Ara~ Queen. <3

I was thinking the same thing, so when I went to check who Tsukuhane's voice actor was, I was like ohhhhhh that makes a lot a sense :)

On another note I love this episode and this show for that matter. It's probably my favorite this season. It makes me sad that there are only two episodes left.

Well I think Omodaka is running away with the D-Bag of the season award at this point.

He's been a jerk to Zakuro, yeah. But I think Shouko Inari from Kuragehime definitely beat him for that award. And if not her, than Kirino definitely should get it. :P

Shouko is nasty, yes, but... She did not actually rape Shu. It's despicable and I would never try to justify it, let alone say that it isn't bad, but it isn't as bad as Omodaka. And although I hate Kirino, she isn't nearly this bad.

However, Omodaka is planning on getting it on with his half sister (Most likely raping her like his father did to Tsukuhane if she doesn't agree), getting Zakuro's father killed and practically telling his mother to drop dead as well. I mean, this guy is a grade A scumbag.

I agree completely. Just cause I said it could happen, did not mean I wanted it to. I really like series where the bad guy is just that, the bad guy. Not all of them are hurting emos, they're just... Bad. And that's what I want now.

I love the way they expressed the emotions in this episode, but at the same time I don't like the direction the plot is taking. Omadaka wanting to marry and make a powerful heir by impregnating his sister sounds like something out of a Hentai to me. I really liked the laid back storyline we had up till now so I'm a little disappointed it went generic on me.

Just curious, to anyone that's read the manga, is this how the story plays out there as well?

I don't read the manga, but I think it does not, since after episode 10, i.e last week, I entered a discussion on IRC channel and read that it will most likely have an anime only ending without any sequels. everything after episode 9 is based on the director Kon Chiaki and not the mangaka Hoshino Lily (although Tsukuhane's story comes from the manga, but excluding Omodaka being her son as what the preview showed). There are only 5 volumes out and episode 9 (Kokkori-san) was volume 5 material which never revealed Hanadate being Omodaka. There is only first 3 chapters of first volume translated though. I wish I could find the raws to confirm.

Could anyone confirm? This is why I hate reading stuff online. edit: and with random people in IRC :|

That would make sense because around episode 9 is when I noticed the style of the story telling change. Thanx for the info, I rarely read manga, but I might make an exception for this.

Hopefully in the future when this great story is completed by Hoshino Lily there will be a proper remake of the series.

I doubt there will be. Name an anime that had a remake (minus Fullmetal Alchemist, which had like exceptionally insane demand and I completely understand why). Even Rurouni Kenshin didn't get to see a remake. So it is easy to rule out. But I will remain hopeful. If the manga never revealed Hanadate being an evil character (as far as I read, Hanadate is shown only as Zakuro's love interest, more like a rival in romance for Kei) and making the OP/EDs such that Hanadate will definitely become the evil character (yes, those artworks during the end scenes are not from the manga in case you're wondering) it does seem obvious that they decided to go to anime-only storyline since the author was nowhere near the ending.

Great shows follow manga through and through taking hiatus when needed, and keep the quality at a level they should be. Examples are ARIA, Gintama, Spice and Wolf etc. But seriously, I would rather see an ending like Skip Beat! or Glass no Kamen (2005) than watch something pull a strange ending which seems awkward to pick from the manga/novel counterpart. Well I don't read them anyways, so I am no one to complain, just saying my preference, since they tend to have better acceptance from the fans in general. at least majority switch to the manga/novels anyways and eagerly wait for a sequel sometime in the future. :/

Edit: but regardless, i think it is okay the path they are taking the anime to. just that they could give some other reasoning than a half-sibling thingy, or even if they did, they didn't have to go to make it look as obnoxious as Hanadate having those intentions towards Zakuro. So my routes would have been

#1. someone else is the evil guy. nothing to do with Hanadate. He remains a major torment between Zakuro and Kei's romance.
#2. Hanadate is the evil guy. But he is not blood related to Zakuro. (Rather it would be awesome if he was Kei's elder brother/half-brother or something.)
#3. Hanadate is evil and is blood related to Zakuro but nothing like having it with her. (maybe making her use her power to rule over the youjin and takeover the imperial army, just saying lol, that would have been grand)
#4. Anything other than what we have right now. =_=

The flashback was pretty great. It gave some great detail and insight on Zakurao's mother, and answered questions I had. It also gave us more insight on Omodaka, giving us a hint on why he's doing what he's doing, how he came to power as chief, and what his role in all of this was. This is one of my favourite episodes yet. Can't wait to see Agemaki save Zakuro though.

This episode was intense. I always wondered why Hanadate (Omodaka) looked similar to Zakuro's mom, but now it cleared it up A LOT. Who would've thought Zakuro's mom lived such a sad life. Hate how her father was killed like that. gah~ so heart wrenching.

Zakuro's dadsy is sure one HOT guy to drool upon. Haha. Thanks to Hoshino sensei, I caught myself drooling with his men.

I hope Omodaka is not that really cruel like his dad. Probably he was just deprived of his mom's love and influenced by his dad's attitude towards his mother.

This episode is really great and just like everyone is saying here, it's getting intense. I really can't wait to see the rest. The number of episodes is 13. I am guessing this show will span till 26 which I truly wish. The art, story, animation, etc. are really something to look into.

What a crappy life for Lady Tsukuhane. Despite her gifts she was used and
neglected. Separated from one child, while desperately trying to hold onto the
one she had. And in between being allowed to enjoy only a fleeting romance with
the only man who showed her any real affection (despite her being GORGEOUS)
before he's slaughtered in her face.

It's amazing how I can love an episode while simultaneously hating almost everything that happened in it.

A very good episode and the story of Zakuro's mother was very dramatic, sad but beautiful at the same time.
Her mother was a lovely lady.
Nice to see that Zakuro was a child created from true love. I guess that's why she's powerful. She looks a lot like her father btw.

I'm happy with this episode because this was a very good set-up for the end.

Omodaka. you sick fuck. Stop trying to screw your own sister.
I guess he took after his father.

GO! Agemaki kick those stupid villagers ass and save your girl. Make sure to punch that Omodaka in the face. It would be funny seeing his bishounen look ruined.

Lovely show. I'm kind of sad is ending.

I'm a tad disappointed in this development, to be honest. Indeed, it's bittersweet and lovely, and we all know how the ending will play out and yet still enjoy it.

However, it really runs contrary to the earlier humans and . Not completely, but for all it's a really heartrending and interesting development, it simply doesn't compliment the earlier feel of this show. In fact, the two feels kind of run conflict like a rivalry.

I also don't like how so much of Japan's Youkai and Human ethnic conflict is so influenced by one little village of Occult Magicians enslaving spirits(who just happen to have that own little Gensokyo like world inside Japan, but pathetically tinier). They'd better not have this as an explanation for much more. They're making it sound like infusion is the only way you can ethnically mix between the two. And that doesn't make any sense. No being has genes so recessive that they would disappear when mating. And they almost escaped this, but then they had to go and say that Zakuro was given "the usual ritual".

Again, as beautiful as this bittersweet family affair is, it's ruining many aspects I already liked about the show. Maybe this is a misconception they've brought on themselves by heavily implying this, but that village is stupidly important to racial affairs. Or it at least seems so. If it is what it looks like, they're making one village on the border of Japan and Gensokyo far too powerful. Stupidly powerful. It's a terrible way to represent Shinto.

I'm really hoping for things to move back to normal and away from the "Oracle Village" theme. And I want to see some fourth demon children running around from demon and human breeding. And more Youkai and Japanese government ethnic politics. And that of course means a second season. Alienated by this development or not, I'm a Shinto nut. I'll be picking the manga up now.

Old avatar and sig retired for now.

Really liked the episode about the past.

But...am I over thinking things? After Zakuro's mother was captured the second time it is said they tried to create a second half-spirit with Zakuro's power but failed every time. I know they created half-spirits before the events with Tsukuhane, but now they basically mass produced them.

Does this mean they started raping Tsukuhane many many times to get her pregnant? This would be a logical assumption as only she managed to give birth to such a powerful child. Are maybe all the girls in prison her children? And all the male half-spirits that doesn't get a human body too?

This thought makes me tremble as it would add so much sorrow to an already sad story.

Man, give us remake\sequel. I hope there will be.
I'm not realy enjoying this plot twist with our cast storming the village. Aren't the girls helpless against priests magic? Riken is the only one not useless with a sword - against the whole village guard? And then they have half-spirits there as well... Oh, well.

Totaly. And I'm a guy.

The tree-scene was hilarious.
The romance was classic and so it's tragical ending.
I like how evil those priests are. Magical using nazis, basicaly. It sucks to be a miko in their village.
Omodaka was brainwashed from his childhood and easily betrayed his mother (which was a stranger to him, though) and later he seems to not doubt ideals he was raised on.
I don't understand when people complain about them being half-siblings. If Zakuro was my half-sister, I don't think that would matter to me :3
