Okay, so I was reading this forum from, what? 2008? And I just had to leave some sort of response. My word had to get out. So here is this noobish user speaking out. So here it is... What I, personally have to say. Gurren Lagann... In my opinion... Is underrated. There, I said it. No, I'm not gonna be some retard and not say anything after that. I'm gonna explain why. When I walk around, when I talk, when I reference, when I SING! Society is like "What are you talking about, what the fush was that?" What happens when I talk about anime? Naruto. Naruto and Bleach. It seems that I'm pulling out all these facts from my experience, I sure am! I guess I'm using the info from the eyes of a teenager (Am I gonna get haters now?). To me, this generation seems to be bloodthirsty for... whatever everyone else likes. But that doesn't stop everyone else from seeking out those anime that will be perfect for them. Everyone has their own preference. And it seemed that the preference for that one year, was Gurren Lagann. Now this is where the term overrated comes in. This is where everyone never thinks appropriately. Their anger, their hatred for Gurren Lagann... Their lust, their love for Gurren Lagann... It possesses them. The thing they overlook? What exactly makes something overrated? To me... something that is overrated, is something that a mass amount of people like, when the actual something is not as good as people say. Overrated is something that people will talk about positively, in large amounts. But this is where opinions come into place, everyone perceives things differently. Now if you were to actually look at polls and such, the only way to get the real results, would be to actually see the peoples' thoughts on it. There could be people mindlessly degrading or supporting one of the choices. So based on Gurren Lagann, it got good ratings. And, a large majority of people love it. But through the eyes of the people that did not, they perceive it as overrated. You can't fill everyone's tastes, but you can fill a large majority of it. Now why do I see it as underrated? Well, through my eyes, all those Otaku or people in anime chat rooms, don't even know what it is. Now when that original post came up, how many people actually came to give a response? How many came to actually take part in the discussion? Around 1,000 people voted, and a number of people discussed. When I think about it, 1,000 doesn't seem like a lot, considering the amount of people who COULD be Otaku in the world. Now think about, Naruto. Maybe even Bleach. How many would people would be talking about those? I keep that in my mind. Gurren Lagann maybe did have a huge hype, but it sure as hell (To me) was overrated. People always seem to try to give BS by saying, "Oh it's so childish" "It's way too over the top". But the thing is, that was the thrill of the anime. That was what made people like it. A huge amount of the population was into that stuff. They loved how over the top it was. The show was a homage, and they felt that old familiar feeling. They loved seeing all those pointless fights, all that yelling, all attack names. It was nostalgic. It was like being a child. And the young viewers? It was the heroic nature. Being able to do anything, no matter what cost. It was inspiring. It was submerging. It made you want to make a difference in life. And like all the fanboys would say, "It was manly beyond all belief." The GAR, the fanservice, the giant robots. Your typical anime, but it was done in such an extraordinary way. They had all the things that made something clichéd, but did it in such a fascinating and heartwarming way. Those fans, were the hardcore Otaku. They were the ones that were retro. All these things, just made their mind explode. It was very pleasing to them, the show, to them, was just amazing. Like I said, just seeing someone go so far to do the impossible, made you really feel for them. Seeing the development of the characters, all their wants and needs, all their dreams. Seeing it being fulfilled was heartwarming. Seeing all those fights, reminiscent of old school mecha, was nostalgic. Seeing a story, that was presented so well, was like a fresh breath of air. It was entertaining. It was an adventure. And that's why I think it's not overrated. I love this anime to death. And it would have not been right of me, to not defend it's title. So tell me, is it overrated, to you, or not? ![]() STOP FANTASIZING |

You must just hang around the wrong kind of anime fan. Gurren Lagann was a great anime... that has finished airing. Naruto, Bleach and One Piece are still currently airing, hence why they are the topic of conversation amongst a good portion of fans. Just because people don't talk about it often, that doesn't mean that they neglect it in favor of the aforementioned series. |

Hmm, I don't know if I agree with the "otaku (I hate it when people use this term -_-) don't really know about it" think. I mean, I've gone to Otafest for 2 years now. If you plop down a picture of Yoko, I'm sure most people would know exactly who she was and what series she was from. The other portion would ask. So I don't think it is as underrated as you make it seem, but it is by no means truly overrated either. I have a much harder time finding fans of Clannad, Wolf's Rain and Durarara!! then I do Gurren Lagann and supposedly, those series are "extremely overrated" as well. Just the way this site is, basing "overrated" on the rating themselves. |

Also, I guess it IS just the people I hang out with, but at those kind of places, a large amount of people go, right, so of course you're bound to find a good group of people who know about it. Anyways, the fact that they hold on to it so preciously after it still goes on bothers me, it was great at first but then it just got WAY too long, I understand that they want to finish it, but it seems that they shun any other anime and such because they have been blinded by it. I didn't literally really mean it when I said, that they were blinded by Naruto, but in some way, I am.You must just hang around the wrong kind of anime fan. I think it was pretty cool, but nog OMGFTHATSOFRIGGINAMAZING-like. I gave it an 8, because; It was sometimes just a litte too badass for me. e____e I don't mind that at all in anime, but sometimes it was just a little over the top and you could just predict what would happen. ;o The ecchi overload sometimes. I love Yoko, and I can understand guys think she's hot, but there's no need to make her undress every second. :l That was one of the minor points though. xD What I did find awesome was the Spiral arc and stuff. I've never seen an anime so focused on drills. x'DDDD I guess that's it, mostly? XD Modified by EllaMila1, 01-02-11, 1:12 PM |

Why can't people talk about Clannad or Gurren Lagann or Black Lagoon or Eureka Seven or Yu Yu Hakusho or Darker than BLACK or Highschool of the Dead... And many more. Makes me feel alone. :( ![]() |

I am on episode four and this is about as good as the first four episodes of the original Pokemon Plato is my friend — Aristotle is my friend — but my greatest friend is truth |

When things become too popular Rich douchebag companies start to use the name in order to make some extra cash, because once it gets a big enough following, everyone will buy whatever they make... sadly Death Note has fallen into this realm. I'm not sure about TTGL but I'm quite happy with its current status. |

For me, Gurren Lagann is just an alternative Gunbuster (Which I like more). Gurren Lagann is good? Yes. Original? No. |

Does it actually get better after episode 10? That's around the time I dropped it. Episode 8 was the only episode I enjoyed really... |

I don't think it's overated, although i do think some people get a bit to "vocal" about it sometimes. One of my all time favorite anime though. |
