Overall it's a great series but I do feel that the ending leaves something to be desired. It could of just ended once the credits started rolling but continuing on to show Shichika and Hitei traveling together I think raised more questions than answers. It also doesn't help that Hitei is a much less sympathetic character than Shichika. It's not a bad ending, I was just expecting something more epic to follow up that super epic climax. --Marigolds |

Well that was one of the most distressing endings I've ever seen. While I love a harshly realistic ending and story I really hated the ending and would rank it up with Lost as one of the worst endings I've ever seen. |

I give it a 8.5/10 which is a 9 in my book. Why? Well, it's surely not because of the ending. The ending fits. The problem is, that they omitted some scenes in the anime in several episodes and in some fighting scenes some moves weren't even shown properly. Oh, and sometimes the characters would actually counter argument themselves (like they tell you their point, then they tell you the opposite of that, making you be like "What? So you want that or not?"). -0.5 for the missing scenes, -1 for the counter argumenting part. The rest is indeed epic. 9/10 is what the description say which is "great". It's not a masterpiece for the reasons I listed. Cheerio! |

I'm surprised I liked this anime so much, loved it quite frankly. Definitely one of my favorite anime and undoubtedly gets a 10/10 from me. |

Well Katanagatari was definitely 10/10 for me - till this episode. I didn't like the ending at all. Togame's death was sad and tragic, but I am into tragic endings, so I was fine with that, what's a problem for me is everything that took place after it. Whole part of fighting in a castle was for me disappointing. And I could even live with Shichika going berserk (though it was like complete ruin of a person in whom he evolved during the journey), but Shichika going berserk and not dying? And travelling with Hitei? I mean really? I almost hated this episode. Everyone who I loved during other episodes turned out to be almost heartless retards. It's ingenious story, absolute masterpiece with exception of this one episode. |

Has to go down as one of the biggest letdowns in my viewing history. I went into it expecting a highly stylised Spice & Wolf, with samurai action. What I ended up with was the worst of shounen fighting, mixed with seemingly unedited novel>animation repetitive, pointlessly rambly dialogue and stirred well with convoluted future-changing bollocks. Aside from Nanami (only character not flakey-fakey, with depth) and the look of the show, there's little I can praise. What irritates me is that the plot twists were more like half-arsed excuses, there to cover up characterisation failings. This is how I imagine the workings of the author's mind to be as he wrote this shit: "You have as much personality as an inanimate object and, since all you do is kill people/your sister when told and were constantly described as an inanimate object (need to buy a better dictionary, ffs...), why not have a plot twist that MAKES YOU into a 'sword'... without ANY explanation or logical follow-through?... God, I'm good--the fans will eat this up!" ..."Killing that #1 swordsman fella off-page, so early in the game, makes it hard to keep these talk-fights semi-interesting. Only one thing to do: make the 'swords' into armour, machines, guns etc and STILL call them swords. Going with a 'from the future' twist later on will have those stupid bitches sucking me off, anyway, so who cares! lol" "In order to appeal to my... readers, I had to have my supposedly revenge-driven heroine act like a cutesy girly-girl in love-love, with her very own word-punch. If she wasn't all moeified and without pantsu, life wouldn't be worth living. So, right when she dies, I'll have her explain her reasons for acting like a jealous high school girl in wuv, white hair aside, as thus: 'i wuvs u, yes i dose, but my heartv and mind be differ & theres a dark avenger within, contradicting everythin. plz understan. bai! Why not have the lead travel with the woman responsible for the 'love' of his life's death, I say? There was never in any point in her collecting the swords and the him going along with it was totally forced. Bitches be bitches was his logic, I guess?... |

He's gone berserk because he became the person he is, I don't really think that in the beginning of the journey he would have done the same thing (even with the feelings for Togame, which hadn't changed since leaving the island) |

Ahh it's so saddening to see Togame die like that. I wonder if she really meant it when she confessed that Shichika was nothing but a tool. And what's with Princess Hitei following him around? 7/10 or 8/10 for me CHEERIO! Modified by milkteh, 09-06-12, 11:51 AM |

I've probably missed the point of Princess Hitei killing Togome. Was it to prevent the change in history? Could someone enlighten me? |

Why do i seem like the only one who liked togame? Sure she set out to use him, but almost immediately he changed her and its obviously she loved him. All those things she said about killing him were lies to make him live his life to the fullest with no regrets(which she also ordered him to do). Even her last words prove this more. CHEERIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! ending so epic.. <img src="http://i55.tinypic.com/27xpf6b.gif" /> |

This is what I call an ending! All the emotions and perfect balance with ending the plot was really awesome to see! The begin of the episode was really sad, deep down I hoped she would survive in a way but that hope was lost when we saw her grave! But yea I think it does strengthen the whole story! After that it was just a massacre the 12 months they where on their journey was all trashed in one single evening, all the swords broken and the goal destroyed, but with such power! Looking back to the old episodes we really see how much he had held himself back to not destroy the swords or get hurt himself! In the end it was a really great journey to see the development of the characters really change over time really makes it awesome and as the length of one episode is longer it made a global episode much richer in story telling! It was a great journey in the end but with a sad ending, still this was one great Anime and a great 10 hour run! 9/10 |

I've finished this just yesterday, and believe me, I was depressed for 24+ hours because of how it turned out; but then again, it makes so much sense. The battle was definitely epic, and seriously, I burst out into tears (well, figuratively) when Shichika dressed up in similar clothing as Togame to mourn her death. That was just *sniff* so beautiful and so touching. The last conversation between Togame and Shichika was so sad... I've never cried from watching something but surprisingly, I was sniffing throughout the last 40 minutes. Although the whole happily-ever-after is cliche, I would've appreciated it more. Just my humble opinion as a girl who'd like a happy ending. (Still depressed and sad from it...) |

Are you fricking kidding me? I wanted to strangle her on the spot she laughed about killing Togame! It was a big let down but then again, I feel like it wouldn't have been as shocking had Togame not died. |

I loved the show but hated that one episode only because i hate sad stuff and death of the main character. If Togame didnt die would you think it could have been better? |

Holy fucking shit, this final episode was amazing! I really regret putting Katanagatari on hold for almost a whole entire year. My friend even called this Anime '9/12' (episode 9 being where I stopped watching at :P). Togame's death scene was very saddening. So Togame was going to kill Shichika when she had completed her sword collection journey and all her feelings were 'pawns'. Dammit, that really got me. I almost teared up too. Shichika totally changed when Togame died. His eyes looked so damn awesome. You could tell he was really pissed off. I loved it when he defeated all of the 12 swords individually. It's like a room full of boss battles. Shichika was so fucking badass. His fight with Emonzaemon was the best. I really liked how he was like 'I don't have to obey Togame's orders anymore. I came here to die'. He looked even more badass with all those wounds and bullets pierced in his body. I absolutely loved it when Shichika killed the last guy while yelling Cheerio~ I'm gonna miss that. <3 Seeing those Togame flashbacks were great. Some parts felt pretty boring but an awesome final episode to a great series. I was surprised to see Hitei-hime still alive and tagging along with Shichika though. Overall giving Katanagatari a 9/10. |

Just managed to get around to finishing this series and, it was amazing. I can see how It would be much more enjoyable watching the series as it aired though, it's not something I can marathon easily. Guess that combined with the fact that I haven't had much time to watch anime recently are the reasons why it took me so long to finish this. Anyway, I find it hard to understand the ending. Hitei had Togame killed whom the seemingly emotionless (Well after that scene hes not really emotionless) Shichika actually loved. Yet he allows her to accompany him on his journey? Even if he doesn't want revenge, surely hes got to hate her or find her company distressing. Or is he really still that emotionless? Modified by Rydako, 11-27-12, 6:36 PM |
