Seriously, I saw this anime when I was a little kid. And as I grow older, I suppose I did have some sneaking suspicions that my distant memories of it might have been a little anime-ish. But otherwise had no clue until today that this movie which I saw was made in Japan. Woah. I honestly feel quite a bit bewildered every time this happens to me, and it happens quite a lot! A lot of my children's movies I watched as a little kid, were, in fact, Japanese. One has to wonder if there were subliminal things there that led to me becoming an anime fan. Anyone else here discover this was an anime thanks to MyAnimeList? |

Not that, but I did discover Tokyo Mew Mew. It comes on this weird little girly TV channel my younger cousins watch; the names were all different (like Zoey instead of Ichigo) and it was called Mew Mew Power on the channel. If it had the Tokyo in it, I'd've known, but it didn't. |

Wow. Yeah, this one totally threw me off, too. I loved this movie as a kid and had no clue that it wasn't originally American. Gotta love the randomness. Now I'm wondering about Seabert the seal... |

I totally did not know that this was anime until I was able to read the credits and have some knowledge of what anime is. But I was totally surprised when I found out along with a couple other movies such as Serendipity the Pink Dragon and Magical Princess Gigi (Minky Momo). and I read that Seabert originated in France but it does remind of Japanese anime. |

Ahh, France, you say? Wow, that's kind of even more surprising to me. I can't really think of anything that I watched when young that I know now/knew then came from France (barring Seabert now, of course). There were a couple of movies when little that I knew at the time were anime, but a french cartoon? That's a new one. =D |

Mwa-ha-ha! I understands your doubts, but this cartoon were made in... USSR! Yes, soviet artist made this film with help of Japan producers. Director was not Japanese, he was russian)). And cartoon was made by famous soviet cartoon company - SoyuzMultfilm (СоюзМультфильм), which made "Cheburashka and crocodile Gena", "Hedgehog in the Hog", "The Mystery of the Third Planet". Japan made music for cartoon, some landscapes an distribute it in america, Britain... USSR made animation, voices, and distribute it in German, France, east Europe Half-maded in USSR and half-maded ion Japan... American version has many deleted scenes (such as killing penguins by poachers and heat Lolo by bird). I recommend you to see russian or japan version - its more logic and more dramatic. P.S. Yes, I am russian. I sow this cartoon at three year. "Приключения пингвиненка Лоло" is showed on our federal TV sometimes. And "The First Squad" is not first Japan-Russian anime. Lolo was the first ;)) P.S.S Sorry for my bad English Language |

Oh wow. You know, for some reason, the USSR's involvement makes total sense to me. Something about how the people are drawn and portrayed in the film definitely rings more true to the Russian aesthetic rather than that of the Japanese. Good info to have. That's very cool that people from two different countries collaborated to make the project. Team building success! =D I'm really intrigued about these deleted scenes now. I'll have to try and dig them up. Thanks for chiming in, Gligarr. And your English isn't so bad. Could use some work, yes, but it's clear what all your sentences mean to say, which is the most important part. I personally have always wanted to learn Russian. Hopefully, I can find some way to do that soon, and then I can be the one apologizing for my terrible Russian. ^_0 |

Wooooow! For most of my childhood I watched only the old soviet cartoons, and this was one of my favourites! That was a revelation, and when I shared it with my mum, she was like "oh yeah... I knew it was something like that". But yeah... Makes me remember my childhood. Didn't change much, I'm still watching cartoons xD P.S. Великий и Могучий Русский Язык rocks! >.< |

This was my sister's favorite movie when we were kids. We rewatched it a few months ago, and then I looked it up on the internet, and discovered it was made by both Japan and Russia. Somehow, it didn't click to me it might be on here until tonight, when I came across it looking for something else. Now my 15-year-old anime-hating sister is sitting beside me saying "Scamper!" in a childish voice. Lol. Funny how these things happen. ^-^; |

Yeah, I'm slowly finding that more and more of my childhood was influenced by anime. It's kind of cool to learn that. |

This is an anime?! My mind is blown. But I'm very happy to have another thing to add to my list. I watched this so many times as a kid that I have every line memorized. |

Yo! I remember watching this when I was like 4 years old. And now watching this 13 years later, OMG that is insane. Anyways, I’m a huge anime fan, and I’ve been looking for a Japanese version to watch, and I could never find it. |

I am from a post-soviet country and i legit thought it was some USSR/Russian cartoon. I was maybe 4-5 years old and i loved it. Maybe my first anime wasn't Naruto or Howl's Moving Castle... It's all messed up in my memories anyway, so i'll have this one now listed as the possible first edit: I've found out, that it is actually both Japanese and Soviet Union film |
