THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Colony drop = asteroid drop. Red ace = red ace. Kid(s) magically find secret super weapon = kid(s) find secret super weapon. Colony destruction = colony destruction. Let's be honest, this just screams Gundam knock off, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. The kids (or young adults, they didn't seem to childish to me) weren't annoying and whiny. They just wanted payback for unjustly having their home invaded and having missiles shot at them from giant military motorcycles.

I had to laugh at how those morons in the motorcycles kept missing Light, Tapp & Kaine with everything they had. Gunfire? Wild and inneffective. Missiles? Even worse! All they did was blow new escape routes into the colony for those guys to escape through.

Overall, the episode was pretty fast moving and intense. It would have been more so if they didn't follow the exact template laid before them by Gundam.

RIP everyone who got killed by the mass driver.

Looks like Lina might be based off of Tokyo Rose? Radio reporter working for/coerced by the empire and talks over the radio to enemy soldiers, calling for them surrender/spreading propaganda/demoralizing.

A mass driver being used as the doomsday weapon, rather than the usual Death Star/Colony Laser is interesting.

According to my research, this is effectively the first Gundam AU. It's made by Sunrise and some of the staff (for instance, script writers Hidemi Kamata and storyboarder Toshifumi Takizawa) are people who worked on Zeta Gundam and ZZ Gundam. Dragonar began airing the week after ZZ Gundam finished (which started the week after Zeta Gundam finished). The tile Metal Armor Dragonar is just Mobile Suit Gundam but with a slight tweak. It seems that Sunrise might have been testing the waters to see if people would still watch military mecha shows by them that weren't dependent on having the same characters as early UC (we wouldn't get F91, the first Gundam completely divorced from the Federation vs Zeon cast and setting, until 1991, 4 years after Dragonar's release, so this might have been scary uncharted territory for the execs). It wouldn't be for another 7 years that we would get the second (first official) Gundam AU with Mobile Fighter G Gundam.
