To be honest, it would have been better off dead. Lets face it. It would be a miracle if this film actually turned out decent.

"Forged in darkness with wheat harvested from Hell's half acre. Baked by Beelzabub; slathered with mayonnaise beaten from the evil eggs of dark chickens, force-fed to dogs by the hands of a one-eyed madman. Cheese boiled from the rancid utters of fanged cows. Layered with 666 separate meats from an animal which has maggots for blood."

I don't think it's gonna get off the ground out of Japan. It's a 22 year old anime flick that's still somewhat popular.

Akira's right up hollywood's ally, so here's hoping it might actually turn out decent.

Its going to be PG-13, so its massive fail, and they wanted to make the plot really simple.

I want to see this get done. There is a slim chance that it could turn out good. If it does, great!
If it doesn't, throwing popcorn at the screen while watching a bad movie is fun too

The Hughes brothers? Really? They haven't really done a lot of films. What I've seen from them has ranged from okay/mediocre to somewhat bad (to be fair I haven't seen the Book of Eli yet though).

Can they really handle Akira?

I didn't even like the anime that much. But I can see it being absolutely ruined now...
What's this obsession with re-makes and sequels? Please, come up with some original ideas...

Well, I see a bit more of a chance for this to turn out decent than most other anime realizations so far. But that's just about potential..
I probably regret this post by now.

Why is everyone just saying no? Sure, Hollywood doesn't exactly have the best track record for adapting books, comics and television shows, but those sometimes turn out great. But, there's been a lot of recent comic book movies that have come out great recently, so why not just wait until it's out? If it sucks, fine, but if it's good, won't you be glad you didn't have a pent up rage for the 3 years of its production?

Basically due to the simple fact that every anime adaptation done by hollywood fails. Sure comic books come out good "some times" but all that tells us is that comics some times work, anime has never worked so far.
It doesn't think, it doesn't feel, it doesn't laugh or cry..... All it does from dusk till dawn is make the soldiers die.

I am not here to say Hollywood past record is any indication that this might turn out good, but from what I saw on the anime the world building aspect of the title is pretty strong, and even if Hollywood as a whole fails miserably more often than not when trying to develop character centric plots, they ARE really REALLY good when creating engaging worlds with stunning visuals.

I am not saying this was ALL that Akira had going for it, but being a big part of the original, and knowing that with a little effort they can make something good, I would rather remain optimistic instead of mindless bashing them for even trying.

This stance some of you seem to share of "if it's not Japanese it sucks" should be looked trough... I am all for anime popularization worldwide, and going trough Hollywood adaptations is kinda a pre-requisite for such a feat, so any attempt (even the terrible ones) are a good indication of it going that way and I will always be optimistic about the possibilities, rather than depressed out of my own pre conceptions.

I don;t want so see a PG-13 rating on that. Akira has way to many things to go against that.

"The producers of the planned live-action film adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira science-fiction manga have hired Steve Kloves to polish the latest draft of the scripts. Kloves wrote the screenplays for all of the films based of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels except the fifth one. He also wrote the Wonder Boys film, and he wrote and directed The Fabulous Baker Boys film.

Albert Hughes (Menace II Society, From Hell, The Book of Eli) is attached to direct the project for Warner Brothers. The project's cast and release date have not been established yet."

So many great stuff have been disgraced by people throwing their cash around and making live action films, even remakes of classic film fall into the same segment, yet on the plus side, a lousy adaptation really makes you appreciate the original a lot more.

Still, I'm hoping this turns out OK and rakes in a new audience.
Yet personally, I would rather an Akira anime, covering each volume of the manga. There aren't many. ;)
