According to ANN, Sasahara Hikaru, the CEO of Digital Manga Publishing (DMP) confirmed the report on Yaoi Review that DMP is preparing a "legal scanlation" site. They plan to acquire manga from Japanese publishers and provide the fan-made translations via the website. The income will be divided among DMP, Japanese publishers and the fan scanlators. The initial lineups will be hundreds of titles mainly Boys Love (Yaoi) manga.

After the release of warning by the Japan-US manga publishers' alliance, MangaHelpers announced to stop posting commercial manga and shift their activity to doujin manga. MangaFox removed VIZ Media titles from their list. OneManga hasn't reacted to the warning, but the top page has been under maintenance.

Sounds like OpenManga actually has some traction but yaoi? Really?

If they want this thing to succeed, they need to have Naruto, Bleach, One Piece and a bunch of shoujo stuff and then put it for free on the site at the same time it's in stores. Everything else will fall into place once that happens. I hope.

How come manga like Naruto and Bakuman hasn't been taken off by sites such as MangaFox if they're removing VIZ media licensed products?

Interesting news about MangaHelpers there. Also, MangaFox has recieved quite a bit of backlash for going PG-13, from what I hear. MangaHut recently had that big to-do, and so there's barely anything up, and a lot of people abandoned the site. OneManga is properly confusing me and probably everyone else by starting up 1000Manga.

same...

On a side note, it was interesting to hear about MangaHelpers and MangaFox but I'm still surprise why OneManga haven't done much yet.

Even if this affected manga I actually care about, I'd probably stick to piracy for convenience's sake. Still, official scanlations seem like a good idea.

It is up to the producers to figure out how to make money on the internet. They have to change their business model and adapt to the new technology. It is not up to consumers to know which manga is "legal" to read online in their country. Some mangas are licensed and can't be posted and read. Some are not licensed and can be posted and read. Others are licensed but not available for purchase. I buy a manga after I read some of it online. It is another form of advertising.

Sorry for the rant. I got off topic. I am just glad to see that a producer is making an effort to change and not just punish consumers.

I'm having trouble seeing how this would be profitable, except perhaps through online ad revenue. Like CrunchyRoll with anime, this is bound to fuel illegal rips also.... or maybe I'm missing something.

This. Also interesting to see the main scanlation taking action against this already. They are really serious this time.

another way the capitalists are trying to exploit the workers.... we need to share the works freely.... and allow the government to pay the authors with money they uselessly spend on the army
"Forged in darkness with wheat harvested from Hell's half acre. Baked by Beelzabub; slathered with mayonnaise beaten from the evil eggs of dark chickens, force-fed to dogs by the hands of a one-eyed madman. Cheese boiled from the rancid utters of fanged cows. Layered with 666 separate meats from an animal which has maggots for blood."

The hell are you going on about?

Just a few corrections to your post here. First would be that is was not an 'anonymous report', it was an anonymous tip that led me to confirm the details with the President of DMP, which was all reported right in my post. ANN didn't confirm the story, my site did. Also, the site is called The Yaoi Review, not Yaoi Online. It would be great if you could update your posting to something a little more accurate. Thanks :-)

lol, I love how the ecchi lovers here hate yaoi =) Homophobic peeps.

You'll get your turn of fun later.

For now, this is great news and it's DMP, of course that company licenses most BL titles.

this sounds pretty much what i thought should happen. if they go at them with force and threats, they will simply go underground or find other means. this doesn't mean there wont be any illegal sources, but at least there will be a legal avenue. unfortunately, if in the end its still not free, there will be no solution.

It will however put an end to the people who say they only read scanilations because they won't want to pay huge sums of cash for books.

I don't care much for Yaoi/Yuri and that kind of stuff but this is good news. I don't think a lot of those get licensed overseas and this is a step in the right direction for the industry to take as a whole. Hopefully this catches on.

I'm not sure about this idea yet... it depends on the price and quality control. I don't want to pay for files when I could be spending the money on other series in book form. Furthermore, it's essentially paying for scanlations, and while I'd be fine with sending the Japanese licensing company a small fee in order to read them guilt-free, I don't want to pay the scanlators or DMP (especially DMP, since it sounds like they're not doing anything for these titles but organizing and hosting things).
