These OVAs are much more interesting than the second season of DTB , story-wise. I wish they had gone with this story as the plot for the second season and had all the second season story presented in OVAs.

The production (e.i. sound, animation and etc.) is kind of shaky in these OVAs but I think the story is decent enough.

They did go with this story for season 2 considering this is the lead up for it. As for production I don't see any difference aside that watching streamed video's sucked, judged them based on a high quality downloaded release.

The OVAs follow yin and Hei as they go through the troubles before Yin is captured and is separated from Hei. The second season goes with those new characters and Hei and the whole focus is mostly on the girl and etc. If a story leads up to another story it does not make them the same thing. The story and cast of the second season did not impress me at all and the series didn't feel the same anymore.

The music is not properly done in my opinion compared to what you experience in the series and the movements at times are not as smooth as they used to be and even the drawings are a bit different at times (specially Hei's profile at times looked like a fan art than the work of the studio). These are not major flaws but still bothered me a bit.

Definitely more people would have appreciated, and accepted S2 easily if this came out first. This OVA so far has been nothing short of amazing. Though, I don't know what would make me rage harder, announcing a 3rd season at the end of this OVA, or not announcing one...

I'm impressed. This OVA has a way more fitting presentation of dtb's idea.
The first season had quite a few lines dedicated for exposition, which was awkward at times. Also, the occurence of some silly characters made the first season very shonen-like. The OVA on the other hand gives a mature image of the protagonists, something which I think was also the case in the second season, if I remember correctly. In my opinion this lends the OVA a very gripping atmosphere.
Highly anticipating the finale.

Well, the episode certainly bridged the gap between the two seasons.

But it really doesn't add anything for the relationship between hei and yin. Nor does it explain anything about the world of contractors and dolls.

The one line I did pickup was that "Contractors are humans that failed to become dolls". But that doesn't mean much without the context of what a doll is in comparison to contractors. All I know is about their ability as observers and that they can have their memories rewritten and programmed to serve a purpose(ep1s1).

It was interesting that the contractors came together to form a community though, after the syndicate fell. The fact that those two contractors rationally decided to have a child added to the possibility of a relationship between Hei and Yin. I don't understand what is holding back Hei, Yin is becoming more adorable with each episode. It's like they are trying to make up for the terrible second season with an overdose of fanservice.

But really, how old is Yin supposed to be? I would guesstimated 15 or 16 by the fact she is average height with undeveloped loli features, and Hei is mid 20s?

Oh look, there are actually good things about waking up at 5 in the morning while I've got a sleep-in to 11~ ^^;
At the end of the last episode, I really hadn't seen Amagiri coming back as an option xD.
.. : | .. Yin~ <3

Yaay, next time, Hei's evolution into Heibo starts xD

Anyway, 3 awesome things about this episode:

  • Yin : D
  • Hei : D
  • Yin&Hei : D

Well, this episode further shows how human he truly is along with some mild Yin actions.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUU H.....HE.....HEY! Damn it, I just can't say it but still WHY? WHY the hell is Hei acting like a typical shonen protagonist? He was never one so why start when someone's in the need of comforting?

It's obvious that he died standing, that man had too much pride in him to die in a clichéd way...

Anyways, Good episode but here go again, the REAL waiting game begins...

It was raining so probably the tree was wet and I think water conducts electricity or something.
About the episode...I quite liked it.I wonder if Amber predicted all these things. That makes her even more awesome.Anyway,Claude trolls like a master, but Izanami is better.

Was expecting a bit more action, since there were about 7 contractors ready to kill Hei and only 1 of them popped up IIRC. Disappointing overall, but seeing Yin doing cute poses in her ghost form was good enough for me.

Now we gotta wait 2 months for the finale...

Yeah or he might have been empowered by the lightning and charged electricity in the air that was going on as well. Either way I doubt he planned on using that much power, just a bit overkill xD

Overall very gloomy episode, especially the scene with Yin crying. And things don't get much better when you already know how everything ends.
Still this OVA kicks the living but out of S2.

Then again, that other contractor dude did something to the tree, which might've forced Hei to obliterate it completely (seeing as even though he did, he still got a quite large piece of wood in his shoulder)
Or well.. That's what I think anyway xD

This episode definitely pulled at my heartstrings. Not only because the writers have no qualms about killing anyone (and everyone) (thanks, Claude :P), but because of the looming inevitability of Yin's transformation and Hei's decision. Seeing Yin taking care of the child while Hei looks on was especially sad, offering a glimpse of what could have been, but never will be. DtB is an excellent tragedy.

I look forward to the next episode!
