Something like Clannad where it has a happy ending and the couple actually gets somewhere with each other and a male lead would be nice.

Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora
I''s (Yes, the anime is a buthered version of the manga but it can still stand on it's own two feet)
Kanon (2006)
Midori no Hibi (has a weird premise)

Somewhat related
Itazura na Kiss (Female lead)

Those three are all good, especially Kanon.

I'll add in REC and Suzuka.

You know, the style of the '80s can't really defend itself, so, I'll just say that it was a widespread, accepted, popular look back then. You can stick to your contemporary gelatinous moe creatures if you like, but you're missing out.

Because Maison Ikkoku has a perfect ending.

I don't know if you have seen them but here is a few recs:

Ef - series (although Ef - a tale of melodies can't be said to be entirely happy, Ef a tale of memories however can be characterized as a happy ending)

Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora (in my opinion a happy ending although some might disagree)

Ocean Waves
Whisper of the Heart

REC

(animes you should stay away from at all cost if you want a happy ending are School Days and 5 cm per second)

Summer Wars
Higashi no Eden (POV is usually the guy's though it was occasionally the girl's, but he's definately the lead)
Lovely Complex (though this has a female lead)

Maison Ikkoku, old or not it's one of the very best romance anime out there. Plus the ending is very satisfying.
"Anywhere can be paradise as long as you have the will to live. After all, you are alive, so you will always have the chance to be happy. As long as the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth exist, everything will be all right."
