Oh yes, this part is like the ending of the whole Rurouni Kenshin anime. It was really good, it shows us what happened in the anime, what happened after the end of the anime. And it gives us a closure, for some it might be sad, I can think of a happier ending than this, but this was like the end of their life, the end of Kenshin. I really liked how they made this special/OVA. And if they would really want to they could continue with the son of Kenshin, though in my opinion this was the best ending. (I still have to see Rurouni Kenshin the actual movie/not the anime movie)

I remember when I first watched this I was depressed for like a week, it really felt like I had grown with Kenshin in the 4 years I spent completing this series. The end was bittersweet in the sense that Kenshin died, but was finally rid of the guilt and suffering he shouldered when the cross-shaped scar finally left his face.

I'm going to keep this at a 9/10 and it's actually motivated to pick up on the manga and see how everything truly concludes.

I was crying so hard at the end I didn't even notice this; after I finally stopped crying I read your comment, went back to check and now I'm CRYING AGAIN.

This OVA wasn't perfect for sure. It was enjoyable, sure, but not great. But this ending was so... so... I have no words for it. I see why the mangaka refuses to accept this OVA as canon. In a sense, I'm happy it's not, because the manga's ending is so much happier and I don't think I could tolerate it if this was a canon ending...

Kenshin's words during the credits: "Goodbye, Kaoru. Thank you." That just killed me. Fuck, this is UNGODLY depressing.

And why the hell did Sanosuke stay behind in (I assume) China when he knew Kenshin was soon going to die? <_>

I wish this would be redone with the dub cast from the TV series. That would make it even more depressing, having all the same familiar voices as before.

Simply amazing, the art and direction were top notch. I understand a good amount of people dislike this ova because it doesn't follow the manga ending, and the author himself apparently disliked this ova as well.

But honestly, the way I see it is that it's merely an alternate take on Kenshin and his life, nothing more than that.

This is heartbreaking stuff, and I thought the ending was beautiful. Probably one of the most touching endings in an anime.

Damn that was just unbelievably good! These two episodes had a lot of a bigger impact than the 94 episodes combined! Damn really that ending was just way too touching, the darker atmosphere, with the heartwarming yet still sad feel in each scene was just too good.

That ending though, this is what I call a real ending of a series and I must say if they included this in the main series with this kind of tone and setting then the whole series would be a total masterpiece!

All in all two amazingly well episodes I must say!

probably from the battle with Shishiro, but who knows, this is why this OVA has been severely criticized for

Honestly this OVA is descent, continuing good things from the last one, Tsuiokihen.
But it does not compensate the fact that it is a such a great betrayal.
Regardless of the ending that is different from the original manga, where Kenshin and Kaoru and rest of people lived happily, this OVA is simply not Rurouni Kenshin at all.
Why? Because the series we are watching is called Rurouni Kenshin not Battosai Kenshin who was still in the guilt back to Bakumatsu.

Kenshin's redemption has been clearly shown in the last Jinchuu arc where he finally realized the importance of family, the importance of survival and the fact that he could no longer change the world with his own sword. At last he was a positive man who certainly understands the importance to at least protect his most beloved family, not abandoning them for goalless redemption that does not exist at all!

Kaoru is different as well, in this OVA she is literally another version of Tomoe, the one who had already died ten years ago, and whom Kenshin finally got relieved with. So, how on earth could Kaoru be such negative, if she had already become the source of positivity and the courage to survive to Kenshin?

Genuinely disappointed. Though the art and music are awesome

Sad, kind of creepy, but good. Much more realistic, in a way that somewhat distorts the original vision. It was interesting to see such a take on it.

what man! It ain't awful. Not every story has a good ending. What you think makes cowboy Bebop so amazing and rememberable? What you think makes guilty crown so sad and depressing? What you think makes tangen toppa one of the great meca anime? There endings.

Not every show has a ending like Naruto. And we know what the result we got (Baruto). I also checked the manga but I still think this is a ending I'll remember forever.

So fudging depressed right now! Some of the ost usage and directing made it all the more impactful.

Going for a Rurouni Kenshin (live action) marathon right now and watched this on a whim in between, and boy I’m sad. Kenshin having to go out and leaving peace and his family behind kind of bewildered me but the death in all honesty kind of subbed me the wrong way.

In any case, I’m still a huge fan of the series. A different ending would’ve been ideal but well, what can we do? At least this is not canon.

6.0/10 from me.

Eight years later, I've finally held true to this desire and finished the story. I definitely wept when Kenshin died in Kaoru's arms. RK was one of my gateway anime as a kid and I always admired Kenshin like a superhero, thinking he was invincible. He was probably the first major anime protagonist I'd ever seen die and it was honestly traumatizing. That said, my heart isn't as heavy towards it now that I've finished the manga and can take refuge in the notion that this is no more than an alternative epilogue.

Revisiting this OVA, my feelings towards it are much more mixed & disoriented. I feel like it does many things right:

+ Yahiko. So awesome to see him grown up.

+ Passing on the reverse blade sword to Kenji. It feels like everything finally comes full circle as Kenji accepts his father's legacy and in a way, it's almost like this is what would have happened if Kenshin hadn't become Battousai.

+ Kenshin continuing to fight to protect even without a sword. I like the idea that he tries to find a way to keep helping others, but the seeming futility of his struggle made it way too depressing.

+ I got a better sense of romance from this OVA than in most of the TV series & manga. Maybe it was in the presentation, but I got a better sense of Kaoru doing what she could to become Kenshin's sheathe and finally return him home - both in body and spirit.

+ Production is god tier.

Though with that said, the Jinchuu Arc was definitely butchered. No two ways around it. It needed at least 25 episodes and it didn't even get 20 minutes. It also altered the motivations of the characters big time and one part in particular completely undermines the main theme of the answer Kenshin found at the end of his battle with Enishi.

I also have mixed feelings about the disappearance of the cross-shaped scar. In one sense, this seemed inevitable and it's rife with symbolism about Kenshin - or rather Shinta - finally being at peace. On the other hand, I prefer the manga's approach as it feels more true to the overall growth of Kenshin and his ideals.

Overall, I'm going to lower my score to an 7.5/10. Reflection is still a wonder and has been an iconic part of my 18 year journey with this series, but it definitely feels like the overarching themes & character growth of the main story are foregone in exchange for extra drama & tragedy. I would have preferred an OVA that just adapted the final part of Jinchuu and the closing chapters.

I've seen this long ago, but back then I remember not liking it at all. I'm glad I rewatched it.

Anyway, I don't mind that this is not a canon ending. I really like it, since IMO, it's a realistic ending. His use of Hiten Mitsurugi has finally caught to him. Time and change isn't always kind. Kenshin's life has been tragic and it's sad to see him die just like that, but at least he died loved by the people around him. He also paved a good future for Kenji to live on. Hopefully, Kenji lived the rest of his life in peace, away from the Russo-Japanese war, the world wars, and the turbulent times after the atomic bombings. 9/10

Anyway, I'm looking forward for the manga to be fully adapted in the upcoming Rurouni Kenshin anime. Hopefully, I'm still alive by then. lol

It was truly a life of everything.. And at the end of the life.. Both Kaoru and Kenshin managed to live their lives in the way they wanted, in the meaningful to them ways..

idk what the heck the disease is or how they got it but i cried like a baby. it was beautifully done. i would have like a funeral scene where all of the old cast comes together but then i'd be crying for days.
