Everyone really can't wait for the day IE6 is declared "dead", but when is it?

As of right now, IE6 is still clinging to its life according to w3schools stats.

Sometimes when you go to an office for an interview, a worker might pull out a 4-year-old Windows XP laptop with its default IE6 browser. If you show your portfolio site that use PNGs as part of the design, it will look crappy. And I'm sure many schools might still have IE6 right now as their default browsers thanks to the lazy installer agents.

It's great to see that YouTube has no longer supported IE6 on March 13, 2010, but it still have quite a big market share numbers in early 2010 and Microsoft still provide Service Pack support until at least July 2010.

We all know why we hate IE6 so much, but I think it will still live on for the years to come. If I had to guess, maybe it's going to be completely dead when HTML5 is ready whenever it is.

This thread itself has been dead for a while (which is a shame, since I like bitching about IE6 as well), but the browser is more-or-less dead in the West. It has less than 5% market share in Europe and the US.

Most of its users nowadays seem to come from one country - China. It's often used with a common pirated version of XP which doesn't allow any updates (so can't update to newer versions of IE). Alternatives to Microsoft software seem to be much less popular or less well advertised in most Asian countries (with some notable exceptions), which leaves the door open for IE6 to dominate where people don't update.

So it's dead here but will be popular in some countries until the people living there can afford to buy a computer capable of running Windows 7. Incidentally, this means means that Web designers have a good comeback when their clients whine about IE6 compatibility and point to its market share. Tell them that all of the browser's users live in China.

And some businesses still supporting / requiring old windows '98, and with it, it's maximum supported version of IE6 (default is 4.1 for normal win 98, 5.0 for SE)... Though most of them won't be connected to the internet anymore anyways.
