I just started reading it, and so far, it comes off as rather homophobic and really heteronormative; i.e., that everyone should be straight, and the whole plot is a plan to straighten the heroine out and make her "normal."

What does everyone else think? Is that the way this manga is...? Does the manga redeem itself, or is it like this the whole way so far...?

(I gotta admit though, the art is amazing and it's hilarious... Please redeem yourself!)

haha I dunno, I don't think a manga as silly and utterly ridonkulous as Houou Gakuen Misoragumi can take on such a serious tone... or do we call it "lesson"? I dunno...but it just doesn't seem to fit.

Like when her mother was scolding her about her being a lesbian, she did it in such a silly and humorous way, that it's kind of hard to take her seriously.

I just think that in this specific case, you can't really take anything they say too seriously...or at least at this point in the story. I'm having a feeling that it'll take a more serious tone as the plot progresses.
"I've read so much manga that at times my mind works in comic panels and dramatically expressed chibis. I'm both ashamed and amused by this."

Oh no, why so? Is it only because her mother wishes her to be hetero? For me it's only used to place her somehow in an all-boys school with a - better or worse - reason.
(The other thing is I AGAIN see a lesbian scared of guys =_= Really, would it be less interesting if she would treat them normally?...)

But anyway, I really can't see anything homophobic about this manga~

I think it's just because it's based a 100 or so years ago. views on homosexuality were very different back then lol

Kei's mother is homophobic like shit, till the point it actually made me raging. But the rest of the manga is pretty cool (so are Kei's fantasies about her high school debut XD)

THANK YOU. Mucho agreement. Hopefully Kei'll get to stay a lesbian...? >.< But the plot's not leaning that way...

Well, I hope she does, it would be pretty weird if she turns straight all of a sudden and becomes the winpy shoujo protagenist we all know. Unfortunately, it sure doesn't look like she'll stay a lesbian, with all those feelings for the little sadist boy. I wish they'd just throw in a girl to make Kei have more high school fantasies XD (and just for the convenience throw out the mother, 'cause she's REALLY getting on my nerves.

It does get less homophobic and heteronormative as the story progresses. (spoiler) We learn that Kei used to like boys as well and some kind of trauma happened to her. I don't know what yet - though that information is in chapter 21.

When I first started reading it, I hated the tone the mangaka was taking. It came across as really ignorant and such. I'm glad I decided to keep reading (20 chapters isn't much of a waste of time) because it does get better. Although I don't know how much of that is because Kei's lesbianism stops becoming so much of an 'issue'... :/

Also, just to say to the people dismissing these claims: just because the series is silly, doesn't mean the message is wrong. Humour is a massively oppressive tool. Aside from that, you subconsciously absorb what you see and read and hear, making this kind of behaviour normal.

Finally, to the second poster, someone's sexuality should not just be a comedic plot point, ESPECIALLY if it is the extremely homophobic view that liking the same sex is wrong and is something that needs to be cured.

Good to see that I'm not the only one who got homophobic vibes from the manga. Personally I'm fine with Kei being able to be friends with boys, but if she suddenly likes them too that'd be kind of...strange. Though it looks like she will be getting together with either Yui (who looks like a girl so... ) or Kousuke. Shame. It would've been interesting to see her go through an all boy's school with her staying as a lesbian. They could've made it some comedy/ friendship thing. Think I would've liked that better.

I'm not saying it's a horrible manga though: good enough storyline, slightly shallow characters, nice art, etc. Kei's mother pisses me off though. Especially after reading chapter 21.

I doubt it was meant that way, it was an overall silly piece, so all the characters reasonings seemed simply funny.
And I think the heroine might have as well been a bisexual. :3

I'm glad someone else noticed the homophobic vibes. And it's not just homophobic, but also transphobic AND sexist. Definitely has a heteronormative tone. I think I'm going to have to drop it. On top of that, Yui's character annoys me far too much at this point.

Unfortunately, I love gender bender manga so I regularly have to put up with crap like this to get to enjoy some small fragment of what I'm interested in.

I don't think so... lol you have to keep reading. Also it says she's disgusted by guys because of some past trauma she doesn't remember. I have a feeling thats why she started looking to girls for romantic relationships (plus she looks like a good looking guy so...)
And her mother wants to have grandchildren as her reason for wanting her daughter to get married in the future and stuff... lol not saying thats a good reason to put her in an all guys school, but yeah... plot device

Theres also the guy who is a major masochist (which I think is hilarious) and wants Yui to abuse him XD

This manga is indeed pretty heteronormative. I kept thinking as I read that if they just made Kei's problem "She doesn't like men" instead of "She's a lesbian who doesn't like men" then maybe the manga would be halfway decent (though Yui would still be an asshole.) It's that little detail - that doesn't even have much of an impact on the plot - that just taints everything (especially since the whole 'lesbian' and 'doesn't like men' aspects are often treated as interchangable.) Of course, once I found out her reason for not liking men, it was so incredibly stupid (not even offensive, just stupid) that I ragequit the manga on the spot.
