what the heck happened to the animation? did they just stop caring? did the artists go on strike? was their budget slashed to nothing? it was like something underfunded middle schoolers would put together in their spare time :(

I know! :( It's disapointing to see such pretty animation be reduced to drawing on sticks. They did so many odd and cheap animation changes within the last few episodes... I just completed the series today so... I was very disapointed.

Just watched this episode today... I was really shocked with the sudden change and found the paper cutout/drawing on sticks stuff really irritating! I almost decided against watching the rest of the series... it was a relief to see ep.20 was back on the normal side.
But in general I must say I'm a bit thrown off by the way the animation style changes and stuff are handled. Experimenting with the medium is fine, but there are times when Kare Kano looks way cheap... and it's a pity, as it kinds of disturbs the attention from what is otherwise a touching, finely written story.
Ah, it's frustrating. I feel like I could love these series so much more, were the production different! Still, I'm going to finish it. :)

"Restrictions breed creativity." - some wise old dude -

From everything I've heard concerning the production of the show, they simply ran out of money to animate anything at even moderate standards. Not surprising, considering Gainax's storied history of poor budget management (Gun Buster's finale in black and white, Eva's final two TV episodes).

But I for one liked that they weren't afraid to try something new. Anime would be pretty boring for me if everything looked exactly the same as everything else. With a shoe-string budget, they were still able to come up with some inventive methods of storytelling. It was fun for one episode, charming even.

Eh? It wasn't so bad. Gainax has always had a history of experimenting with animation. Often you can't even call some of the stuff they do animation. I don't mind. I actually thought it was funny. The way people were warning me about this upcoming arc I thought my eyes were going to melt or something.

Wow. They either had huge arguements in the staffroom, seriously blew all their money or just gave up. Interesting (could be even regarded as original and good) result though.

I got used to it after 10 min, and I actually liked it. Although, haven't they used a different animation style in EVERY episode? Because that's what annoys me the most. I wish they would stay consistent.

Never mind the (awesome) budget cut workarounds...

The scene where Yukino says to Arima how she can tell how much he cares about her by his touch and wants to return the favour ends with a close up of Arima looking down at something and smiling. Am I just reading too much into this or...?

yeah...that looked like penance. I think i would have preferred this style to be more evenly spaced through the show (except for the sticks...grr) if it's a budget issue the grown up thing to do is save a little at a time to make sure the money lasts all the way through.

I liked this episode.
as badly animated as this episode is, i think it was a smart move to animate the episode this way instead of using repeated animations, flashbacks, and frame stills.
Or even worse, a recap episode.

The animation doesn't bother me as much as the constant recaps. Since this series ends rather abruptly, I'll be going on to read the manga. I really loved the first 13 episodes--since then it has fallen a bit.

Absolutely hated the way the episode was presented. Crudely draw, barely animated pictures just doesn't work. Something like that is fine for little parts here and there but the entire episode? Give me a break. Getting a new character like that is pretty sad, too. Would have liked him in the shows style instead of drawings colored by crayon.

That said what was going on was still great. Still love the characters and their interactions so I lived through the horrible animation. Just really, really hope it isn't done like that again.

An innocuous return of the pre- mid 90s Gainax spirit spearing throughout the entire episode (that, or the animators really wanted to do something artistic), helped by the quirkiness of Anno's direction not showing any fatigue. Nonetheless, it was a sign (almost admitting a problem of sorts) that the balance of sympathetic drama and artistic comedy that defined the show will not be the same after the episode is finished. Or, at least, won't be returning at a frequent pace anymore.

The art style sure changed a take on real life visuals animated with some fast drawn stuff on paper and then cut out, it was rather unexpected to result to this but well it was funny in a way :p but I do hope this is an one episode only thing as it might get annoying in the long run!

The episode it self was pretty random, with them going back to school and she being totally insane again to become first!

Also a new character that might be interesting to see in the future story...

The relation between those two sure got serious real fast...

Lets see what happens next!

Drastic change in animation... not to mention, the Osts, are belch.
Oh, so it's true they apparently 'did it' the other rainy day, because Arima was asking how her body is.

Yes. they had intercourse. You probably saw the censored version of episode 18.
And yes, it was unprotected as Arima asks Miyazawa how "her body is" indirectly implying to ask if she's got her normal period.

Then again this is a 2 year old reply.. well it'll help clarify future generations.

The animation wasn't that bad to make me turned off the episode and ran away with a cry of terror. Actually there were some scenes which spoke to me.

Definitely something bad (or dunno) going on with Arima. I mean scene when he asked her how's her body. He looked down with sweat drop and then darkness began to absorb him. Plus then - photos of cracked walkway...

Wandering what ending was supposed to mean.

Those harsh 90's where Gainax runs out of budget at the best shows they make. I mean not only Gainax many other studious too. Considering how difficult it was with the limited technology and low budget they still managed to do something "different".

So STFU and continue watching!!!

It wasn't so much that it was "badly" animated, but just that there was almost no painted cel animation, instead it was pen and pencil drawings on paper cutouts combined with some stock backgrounds. The animation was there for the most part, it was just done in a much cheaper way. Additionally this was the first episode where Hideaki Anno was not the head director, owing to the rather famous disagreement with the creator over the series focusing too heavily on comedy. So really I think budget concerns plus a change behind the production contributed to how remarkably different this episode is.

Certainly creative, but too jarring and frankly made it hard to focus for 20 minutes. I don't mind when they do this sort of thing occasionally, but an entire episode of it got really hard to stomach. It's a shame because this show has had some really fantastic moments, I don't want my clearest memory of this to be how hard the budget got nuked.

Also those narrative recaps are getting really annoying now. I do like when they add new info, such as the economic depression. It compliments the (usual) art style's dreariness. But dedicating 2-3 minutes to say "Yukino was a model student. Yukino was just doing it for blah blah. Arima is a model student. Arima has blah blah. They became friends, then a couple, then blah blah."
