The WWII/atomic bomb metaphor definitely works here, but the episode is best explained by the hallucination theory. Although we don't actually see Fuu eat any mushrooms, I think it's safe to assume that she in fact did, considering she is the first to fall through the pit (like falling down the rabbit hole) AND considering her ceaseless obsession with food throughout the anime and how she eats at every opportunity.

I didn't like this at all.
The ending song being interrupted to continue this zombie thing sucked too lol.

The only clever thing was the reference to WWII at the end like others have pointed out. But, that's it.

obviously a hallucination, i mean, the freakin episode was called cosmic hallucinations. oh, and the whole WW2 allegory seems kind of far-fetched to me

Wait what? The episode was called Cosmic Collisions, not hallucinations. Anyways, it was weird but I liked it.

Hey guys, read this:

http://www.spookhouse.net/angelynx/comics/characters-episode-22.html

Pay special attention to the commentary section at the end. It might not be what the creator of the episode wanted o convey, but it certainly is an interesting perspective.

If you don't read into this stuff and see these small details, it just seems like an unsettling homage to zombie movies. So, I'm glad this was here.

I like how Champloo is indeed a "champuru" of different elements, but kind of off putting to have this episode after Sara's death.

Wow that was really poorly placed in the series. Its episode fucking 22 and this comes directly after a really important seeming part of the series.

I could have done completely without that episode, and it kind of has an impact on how I feel about the show overall - Shinichiro Watanabe likes to be outside the box, but that felt like a slap in the face to the audience more than any sort of creative diversion from the plot.

It wasnt even that interesting by itself, like nothing happened the were just mining and seeing some zombies? Why was this even made? I understand its supposed to be a mushroom trip, but let me tell you, tripping isnt nearly as boring as that was. Shinichiro Watanabe (I just love to say his full name) also had a shrooms moment in Cowboy Bebop - maybe he just wants everyone to know how groovy and hip he is, but nobody gives a shit

Thriller, thriller night~

Well... pretty terrible episode tbh, it sucks because I'm still doubting between a 6 and a 7 score and with this episode so close to the end it really gives me a hard time to increase the rating.

What the nuts was that about?

A load of zombies who don't realise they've been dead for 500 years, trying to find treasure :/

Ermmm okay then.

Considering it's so close to the end I expected important episodes to the story, not filler like this that's just random as hell.

Awful episode even worse than the Graffiti episode. As others have said I could have done without this whole episode tbh. It offered nothing, it wasn't funny or interesting. It's also an odd place in the series especially after such an awesome arc.

This episode had no place in the series. Allegories and episodic nature aside by 22 episodes there is a very specific definition as to what is, and is not something to expect in Samurai Champloo. Including this episode was a terrible idea. No clue what they were thinking.

Actually. It's believed mushroom spores can withstand the vacuum of space. It's also theorized that a meteor might have brought mushroom spores to earth long ago. So I believe the episode is hinting at the power of the mushroom. In being able to withstand space. To bring creation to earth. To be able to be food/life. To be able to cause hallucinations/visions. And finally to be able to cause death. Whether by eating a poisonous one. Or the mushroom cloud after a nuclear explosion/meteor crash. A weird episode nonetheless. But I think this is the ode to the almighty mushroom.

The song's ending was a surprise :p

Nice episode, I quite enjoyed it.. was kept in mystery the entire time.. you keep wondering "what's going on" the entire time and, maybe it's a hallucination, or a dream, or may be a super-dimension like the episode said.

Who would've thought that shooting stars were once considered bad omen?

This episode is just trash.
The hole series kept this vibe of ending of samurai era plus hiphop and then, out of the blue, zombies. I got that was reference to second WW, but this episode is random and out of the context. SC is a episodic anime, and episodic and random are two diferent things. There is a theme than hold the other subplots, and most of then add to the main plot, but this one don't add anything at all. Is just a out of pace joke. I was totally hyped to watch the rest of the series after episode 21, but 22 breaks the hype.
I really think that this stupid joke takes down some points of this amazing anime. Just wished that it didn't exist at all.

It's 4 am and right after I watched the episode with Sara's death which I found amazing, I was like "Hey, time to watch one more episode and sleep!" and god did I regret that cuz this episode is LITERALLY GARBAGE. Gah, why did they think this was a good idea? It was so boring and unfunny and pointless and out of place, literally a waste of time tbh. Like, zombies of all things? Seriously? Yall say it's something about WWII and has deeper meaning or whatever but it sure as hell was handled poorly.

I closed the tab right when the music started changing in the ending. Idk what they were gonna do, I'll see whatever it is at daytime at least lol.

I'm surprised by the response to this episode. While it was certainly jarring, I still appreciate how experimental it is when compared to the rest of this show. In particular, I enjoyed the desaturated colour palette and dreary musical score, since both really contributed to the bleak themes of this episode. That creepypasta moment in the ed was also pretty great too.

The 'twist' (if you could even call it that) was apparent from the get-go, though I enjoyed watching it develop. The art and animation was also pretty gorgeous too, since it was one of the only times where it remained consistent. While this isn't the best episode by a long shot, it's certainly the most memorable.

With regards to the 'why is Fuu hallucinating with Jin and Mugen' question, I'm pretty sure some hallucinogenic mushrooms can impact people through their spores. That would explain why Mugen and Jin were significantly worse off then Fuu. It's also possible that this is set in either Jin or Mugen's mind, since it's impossible for them to all share the same hallucination.

I think your straight on with the spores, Jhin does remark how they spread, !7:07 you can see the body being a tree. I liked the different take it had. It did give me the ok boomer meme thought watching it.

The ending at first seemed rushed, but looking back in the episode made more sense to me. The strum of his biwa can summon stars, and its the stars that are supposedly granting them immortality. The crew doesn't actually die, but the star dying means the dead can't exist. The story he sings explains his pool of bodies to use. they were followers of his ancestor. Ironically its his remarks of generations makes the 5 years of digging impossible. The one thing that confused me was why Wasabi? They'd need to have a watery area, but the place seemed dry like a desert.
