This is my 3rd time watching Samurai Champloo. I didn't recall this episode before this rewatch, maybe I was scared,
but this is definitely one of those "you get something new every time you rewatch."
That's how classics stand the test of time.

Many cultural references have been pointed out above, including Kotsure Oogami and the nuclear bomb to Nagazaki, another one I wish to add is the Chinese fable "The Peach Blossoming Spring".

The fable describes a utopia where the residents have zero knowledge of outside world or the political regime/ dynasty change, because their ancestors moved in here 500 years ago (coincidence?) to avoid civil wars.

Glad I insisted not to skip the opening and ending. Checked the normal ending visuals to make sure those Shige scenes are exclusive to this episode.

Fun and intense episode to see Watanabe's mix of 1-episode story between utopia, dystopia, treasure hunt and zombie, constantly swinging between humour and error. Not an appealing episode for most of us (including myself) but definitely not a forgettable one as you gain more experiences.

I don't usually participate in episode discussions - especially ones for older anime - but... what in the hell happened here?

Things just got weirder and weirder the more I kept watching, and the whole time I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. This wasn't like Cowboy Bebop's acid trip episode - that one was actually really funny. This one felt like a pointless waste of time.

Definitely the worst episode of the series by far. I hope the next one is better - to be honest, my expectations are low after this.
NOW WATCHING: Blue Exorcist (Season 3), Bucchigiri?!, Bungou Stray Dogs (Season 2), Delicious in Dungeon, and Mashle (Season 2)

You can't just have the whole show be about samurais and hip-hop and then throw in some alien and zombie subplot towards the end of the show! Although everything we've seen before this episode was weird and definitely not historically accurate, this is the first straight-up impossible, stupid thing we've seen. Horrible episode, felt like filler.

This show is actually beginning to grow on me. Last two episodes were great and this one is my favourite up till now. It was so bizarre and interesting. I really like those kinds of episodes. It reminded me of the fridge alien episode in Cowboy Bebop.

Wait people don’t like this episode? I thought it was one of the best yet. It created a brilliantly creepy atmosphere and it all felt extremely weird in a good ways.

This episode was weird but it's so good and probably one of my favourite eps so far. I mean, meteors AND zombies!?Shige was making his workers work for 500 fucking years and it was all for nothing lol.I LOVED the eerie atmosphere, takes the show down a whole new turn!

And the ED stopping near the end for Shige to say To be continued was scary and hilarious XD.Can't wait to see more of this trippy stuff!

Maybe this was just me, but I was pretty sure that the entire episode was an allegory for Japan's involvement in World War 2.

A crazed ruler from a long-dead, long-obsolete generation battling for hopeless ideals? His oblivious supporters, who gladly KILL THEMSELVES for him? His empty promises? A goddamn MUSHROOM CLOUD, identified as such?

Ogami Itto and Daigoro standing and watching it, shaking their heads?

It wasn't a great episode, but it had a deeper meaning than simply being a zombie parody.
Agreed. That mushroom cloud scene especially hinted a WW2 reference.

There were random episodes before but this.. zombies.. seriously? Don't really care if it was a metaphor or reference as this particular episode doesn't add anything new to overall story. Random as hell.

Randomness is the whole point of the damn show omg, y'all fucking lame complaining and crying about crap like "oh it doesn't relate to the story", IT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF THE FUCKING SHOW, and it works perfectly
Ya lol. There's a reason it's called SAMURAI CHAMPLOO. It's mixed bag of pop culture references and genres and thus ep has lived up to that by its randomness

Honestly, I didn't understand practically anything that happened in that episode. Was it all a dream or a hallucination, or did it really happen?

I am also of the opinion that this show wanted to have an episode like "Toys in the Attic" from Cowboy Bebop, but the reason why this one falls flatter is that it doesn't have any deeper meaning behind it. In CB there was still the lesson that you can't fridge your past forever as it will eventually come back to haunt you, that comes back at the end of the show.

It was an amusing episode, but it ruined the mood set by previous one. Should've placed it better or removed it entirely in my opinion.

Ok... This ep was something else, it was like that ep from cowboy bebop with that alien thing or whatever. I'm sure that's a deep meaning for this but this was actually my least favorite ep. But I still enjoyed. That's actually zombies in Samurai Champloo ha

Not only is this a below average episode, but it also doesn't fit the rest of the show or reveal anything about the greater story.

This episode reminds me of that mold fridge monster episode from Cowboy Bebop lol, both are unique, weird, and odly terrifying and make me thank god the show is episodic. The use of coloring and directing are surreal and flat which provokes an indescribable feeling, Shinichiro Watanabe sure likes to mess up things

How come so many people were hating on this episode? This was the most fun and experimentally creative one, sure the filler element is there but this anime hasn't been shying away from its gag humour at all, so I don't understand people's confusion, like are we really watching the same show? Lmao anyway this was one of my favorite episodes this series.

Ehhhh, do I even need to explain why this is a bad episode?

Breaks tension and pace, introduces absolutely absurd and irrelevant concept of zombies to the series and worst of all - is that protagonists had no intention of participating in the shit.

Absolutely THE worst episode so far.

It is a somewhat out of place chapter due to its tone, Watabe has the need to include themes and references in his series but they do not always contribute something to the plot due to the episodic format. If the mushrooms were a reference to what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki I don't know how it ties in with the "Treasure" of the guy's "family". I would just say that the episode doesn't add anything and is out of place.
