Like I said I would watch it again tonight and I did. I still stand by my 10/10. I think the main strength of this movie lies in how every story overlaps each other perfectly, to even the littlest detail comes into play. (See that blurry person in the background? Later you find out it is someone involved) This is easily a watch a 2nd time movie. I picked up a whole lot of things I didn't even think about when watching it the 2nd time. Its hard for me to find a flaw in the storytelling; a part where the character overlap didn't flow so nicely or accurate. But also, in the tradition of the Pang brothers, there is a specific meaning behind it...hence the "If" during the credits. This really makes me think of the animes Noein or Bokurano, where there are alternate realities based of of even the most minute action of one individual. In this we get to see one reality played out in it's entirety. Through the If it hits to another possible outcome. Realistically there are so many different outcomes. What if Ling would have sold herself like it seemed like her boyfriend was suggesting? What if Crissie would have not been bundling money at the exact moment when Pak-ho came in? What if Carolyn wasn't such a ho and went for everyone..mainly guys since she obviously had a thing for her roommate? It can be just a sea of endless what ifs, and that is what I love about it. But I am curious for those that watched it. Put yourself in the situation of any of the characters, and what would you have done differently? |

I have no idea why you said Bokurano instead of Baccano! But yeah, these type of stories are great, the act of showing you the end and then starting from the beginning keeps the viewer paying attention for details that will lead them to what they already saw happen. Scenes also change meaning as more details are added, the girl in the background that you payed no attention to the first time seeing the attack is suddenly more important after following her into the store and see the events unfold from her eyes. Thus, a 5 minute scene can be reused over and over but it's never boring or annoying because each time you are seeing it from a different perspective and mindset. The other great thing is it's pretty much entirely based on the characters, and when you can relate yourself to what is going on, you in turn care more. And they did a great job in this movie of giving these characters lives. Though I will say, it took a moment for me to realize that the perverted manager was in fact the hostess girl's patron. The "if.." part during the credits was a nice touch, but I'm not certain it was really necessary and I feel it conflicts with what we had been told about some of these characters. In the end it felt more like they are different people, instead of simply making a different choice. Anyways, it was a good movie, much better than I had anticipated going in. But I can't say it's a favorite, I can't root for many of the characters in the end. Though it does get an extra point for having two girls making out at the end. 8/10 |

First off I just noticed I put May and not March. My bad. The reason why I chose Bokurano is related directly to the "If". Basically both focus on seperate realities that branched off from choices made to from anyone, and how everyone is affected. Honestly there are infinite possibilities here. How would it have differed if one of them didn't show up inside the store? Maybe no one would have died that way. Now this movie does give credit to Vantage Point, even up to ripping off the cover, but like you said it focuses on characters more so then VP, which I like a lot better. :) |
