Both Sony Vegas and After Effects can be used on a Mac. If you're wanting something simple yet effective, Sony Vegas Pro is right up your alley. If you're wanting something more complicated, yet very expansive, go for After Effects. In reality though, After Effects is a program used for all those cool motion graphics and particle systems you'd see in the movies, not for simple clip cutting and timing. The workflow (if you're trying to create an AMV in it) is incredibly slow. I suggest cutting clips in a simpler program before bringing them into After Effects, such as Vegas or Premiere.

I don't think anything mentioned in this thread is going to run on a netbook.

its not free but its way cheaper and if you want it for free there's a way to hack the program

i use windows LIVE movie maker. it crashes every once and a while, so you'd have to save every so many seconds and stuff. has cool effects though, so it's worth it. it may be a little complicated at first, but not like vegas.

yes i like using video pad editor too when i don't have anything else. it doesn't really have any effects but it is great for a free software and you can crop shots and resize things if you have footage in different dimensions which is extremely useful.

When shopping for the best video editing software, you'll want to find an application that offers a variety of useful editing tools, compatibility with many file formats, an easy-to-use interface and strong support options. Some popular softwares are Corel VideoStudio Pro X5, Adobe Premiere Elements, CyberLink PowerDirector 11 Deluxe, Ulead VideoStudio 9,Final Cut Pro X, Sony Vegas Pro 11......
