(TV Series) It's been one I've had an interest in for a long time, but the episode count of 113 is pretty intimidating for me as someone who doesn't typically watch long running anime. Come to think of it, maybe that's changing. I'm currently watching Maison Ikkoku, which has 90-something episodes. I'm also rewatching Dragon Ball Z, which has nearly 300. Huh. |

| Finished Maison Ikkoku. 7/10 on my list, so not bad. Went on too long for its own good and too many misunderstandings due to Godai's pathetic inability to say what he wants to say. Still, 7/10 is good for me, being that my average right now is like 5.2 Was thinking of starting Kimagure Orange Road, but I'm kind of romance'd out now. Might try to find something more action based and fast paced. |

I'm not sure how best to approach or appraise the film, because of that. Normally, one either wouldn't have such a character be the protagonist (example: that guy in Shirobako [Tarou, incompetent jerk meant to represent Shirobako's director when he was younger]), or would have them go through some sort of redemptive growth arc. Thinking about WWII films, most would probably agree that Schindler's List's subject matter is a technically worse atrocity, but that film is uplifting... and I will always prefer that, a preference which inescapably tarnishes my ability to appreciate good storytelling. :P I liked Barefoot Gen much more, simply because the MC was an alright kid and did his best in the situation. Every single character could have died by the end and I still would have liked it more, because of that. Considering Grave of the Fireflies as a portrait of the tragic consequences of human nature, Admiral Holdo vs. Poe in The Last Jedi seems comparable in terms of audience receptivity. I liked that movie overall (only seen it once), but I can't see myself ever seeing Holdo's leadership decisions as justifiable. | Recent sequence of events: I asked for classics with great soundtracks, was recommended https://myanimelist.net/anime/1285/Soukihei_MD_Geist (which does have good music), I read this: busterbeam said: they used to not license generic crap back then, so when a show that was just bland and forgettable came out in the West, among all the Akiras, Yamatos and Robot Carnivals it just seemed irredeemably shitty. So I watched Robot Carnival. https://myanimelist.net/anime/2182/Robot_Carnival It's an anthology of short films, most of them dialog-free, and it's well worth watching. It is, as one review describes, comparable to Disney's Fantasia, but with original music, some of it by Joe Hisaishi. It mainly alternates between action and slow, thoughtful pieces. Now that I'm back into anime after a little hiatus I was delighted to see all the episodes have now been subbed, so I've started that over. Enjoying it so far. |

| Conjecturally, if one in ten serious modern anime fans use MAL, maybe one in fifty classic anime fans use it? | Ashita no Joe and Ranma 1/2 are two old school shows I'm currently watching. Very different types of shows - with about a decade or so between each I believe - but they both rock so far. Only about a dozen or so episodes into each. Ranma I've know about for many years yet only now am getting around to it (thanks to watching a few eps on Hulu and liking what I saw). Have not read the manga but anything based off Rumiko Takahashi's work is usually amazing. Ashita no Joe is also one I've heard good things about before but it took watching the new series Megalobox to really convince me to give it a shot. Glad I did! |
