This show really got the ball rolling pretty quickly, i cant wait to see where this goes, i just hope angelo doesnt cop his way out of this and the show will have him in between the conflicts of 2 families out to get him and eachother. That said he probably will find a way to regain their trust back.

As an asian who has never been out of her continent, can someone tell me if Italian names were really that popular and commonplace during the Prohibition era in the United States or is that just for the sake of storytelling in the anime. Or the story just happens to focus on an Italian descent community in the States?

This episode was simply amazing. I wasn't expecting that kind of plot twist at all!
Also, Serpente's body disappearing from the scene like that is quite the cliffhanger. Can't wait to watch the next episode.

No, Italians were largely discriminated against for a long time so you would mostly only see those kinds of names in Italian dominated communities where they stuck together. I think the anime takes place in some area of Chicago if I remeber correctly.

I really like this anime but I can't bear how the names of the characters are just random italian words, it's making it almost impossible for me to watch it.

I agree with you about the names of characters. I don't speak Italian (idk if music counts) but they did sound a bit off to me, and a little weird/made-up and now that you mentioned it I can't help but feel like I can't take this seriously lol

But I'll still watch. I'll forget I ever used google translate XD

I have no symphaty for Vanno after rewatching the night of the murder. He and Nero are the ones who shot at Elena(mother) and Luce (brother) and ganged up on Testa with Vincente Vannetti. Poor Angelo. Nero was also the one who shot at Angelo when he was escaping to the forest.

Overall, this episode sold me to the series. The opening and the Italian opera singing classic Italian song was really great and the humor is kept to a suitable amount. Angelo looks good and hoping Corteo plays a bigger role.

I'm curious who sent the letter though.

Isn't it because the setting is at Italy? I mean, all those mafias and the word "family" gives it away...also, churches and bar are abundant...

There are a few things I wanted to say after watching episodes 1 and 2 for a second time. Other than I'm completely engrossed in it and can't wait for the next episode, after reading through reddit, I've been pulled into the series even more.

First off, it's a pretty easy find, but everyone should search up the OP lyrics. Signal - TK from Ling Tosite Sigure. It's giving us hints on how 91 Days might turn out.
http://www.lyrical-nonsense.com/lyrics/tk-from-ling-tosite-sigure/signal/

Jump straight to the 3rd and 4th line of the English translation, it reflects what Angelo might really feel about his revenge. Before he loses his raison d'être (his hatefulness), despite what Vincente Vanetti says in the first episode on the night of the murder (~"he'll never forget us [killing his parents, that's why he can't be spared]"~), he needs to follow through with his goal or else he won't be able to. That's only a part of the lyrics, keep reading through and you'll definitely see how interconnected the OP song is with the storyline.

Next, I wanted to talk about Fango. In the first episode, we see him be engulfed in an explosion of flames, caused by the mixture of paraffin and water. I don't quite know the science behind it, but could the reason of why we see Fango in the next episode "unscathed" (haha, yep, I'm sure he loved being burned, that sado-masochist) be because it was one the paraffin that burned? Like how pure alcohol burns but nothing else it's doused in? The heat might have caused some damage, but I'm just guessing. If anyone knows, be sure to tell me.

Thirdly, I've in my head that Angelo and Corteo are around 18~19. Corteo mentions saving up for school (uni or college), and judging by the night of the murder 7 years prior to their present, the two looked 11~12-ish. There's also to consider (based off past conventions) that a lot of kids their age, particularly young men, get involved in the mafia for quick (and dirty) cash because they're bored, need the money for other reasons, or get involved some way or another whether they like it or not. Like Tronco, who seemed to be in it for getting a car, it wouldn't be strange if Angelo tried to join the family. Most newcomers become sacrificial pawn if they don't prove useful (though controversial, because killing anyone from any family becomes an issue. Once again, like Tronco).

I wanted to mention how easily information can be gathered. It could be because Nero and Vanno are awfully loose-lipped, or how well Angelo gained the trust of those two. Reddit has some in-depth discussion so check that out.

Lastly,
smackells said:
Was I the only one who thought the wedding music sounded like "pop goes the weasel"?

Nope. Sounded it pretty familiar when I heard it. Could be, in a way, foreshadowing Angelo's sudden "betrayal" or the surprises to come.

Edit:
Forgot to mention, watching through the OP, there's this particular scene where Angelo's grasping his gun, almost as if his embracing it. Could it be he's holding onto it because he's got no family to hold onto? Because it's the source of his hate and vengeance? Either way, this scene in particular is my favourite. There's something he doesn't want slipping away.

Not awful, but globally unimpressed. Presentation is pretty listless as it's mostly about expotalk with panning over the scenes. As for the plot it works together, yet it's in a shoestring as it devours whatever potential characters could have in terms of depth. There's little chemistry to feel in their interactions, because the events are moving forward too quickly. Indeed, episode 2 sees the death of Tronco, Vanno's outburst at the party and the execution of his plan, all along. This looks so conveniently staged it breaks the immersion for me overall. Something as serious as a revenge gotta soak and be delayed all the more by exterior factors before the optimal conditions are met. That, to capture maximally the frustration of protagonists like Angelo or Vanno. And before you counter my point, I say no, time skips never count in the process of development. It must exist only to have plotline disregard irrelevant moments.

Talking about the contract on Fango's head, Vanno doesn't even offer basic support like learning to Angelo the basics of firearm wielding. He comes off as amateurish, even more so he's not even able to determine the reliability of a recruit after so much time in the mafia. That's lame as it makes his potentially moving relation with his slain friend worthless, reduced to the state of a plot device created for the benefit of Angelo.

The confrontation with Fango is easily the biggest highlight. I'd normally say an anime with a cast full of the likes of Fango is edgelord, but in this case he represents an added value coloring the show positively. In fact, he reminds me Nicholas Santoro in Scorsese's Casino: a batshit crazy character very short in temper, to the point it creates all sort of problems around him. I like to hate him. As for the others, due to the points I raised above, I hardly care, to be honest.

tl dr;
Fango is a great antagonist, the characterization is poorly exploited and plot staging is dull.

That cliffhanger caught me off guard, I didn't expect that.
I liked OP and ED. They were great.
The episode however, despite that it's better than the first episode, didn't really satisfy me. There were a few plot holes in my opinion. For example, like how Vanno ran away from Serpente in the beginning of the episode. It should be impossible for Vanno to be out of Serpente's sight. He didn't push Serpente that far. Even if, let's say, he couldn't see where he went, Vanno literally stomped on the ground, how couldn't he heard his footsteps?
Also, Avilio stood there for at least 3-4 seconds before firing his gun. Let's say that it was his first time shooting a gun, so he tried to steady his aim. But there is no excuse why he didn't shoot Fango when he tried to ran away from the balcony. Even I could've shot him at least two times.
I know that I'm being nitpicky here, but I just find these sort of things pretty weird. And please, don't come up with excuses like "Everything is permitted, as long as it serves the plot" or something. If they're making a mafia themed anime with shootouts, they shouldn't leave any space for other possibilities.

Aaah, the opening...Honestly, this is the first time ever that I tear up okay I cried, don't judge me while watching/listening to an OP. The visuals with the song and his singing are just perfect together. Best OP of the season in my opinion all right.

The ending though ! But isn't it weird that Angelo believes what an unknown person send him...? Didn't it cross his mind that it might be false information/ someone using him and his revenge ? Feel like he might be killing the wrong people.

Pretty solid episode even though his way to get into the family depended almost on pure luck, he had no real plan, just improved.

But they manage to build up pretty good atmosphere of twenties and I really like it, animes like these are very rare.

And the end really didn't go as planned for him, it seems he either managed to survive or someone saw him.
I really wonder if it has to do with his mysterious benefactor who is probably member of one of another families. And now I really want to know how he who sent the letter even knew he was him when he is going by false need (even though they could presume he ran).

Mmm, I like the whole ambiguity as to who we are supposed to root. It makes it harder to watch. Main problem is Angelo is very flat beyond the revenge motivation. He even brought his only friend to danger.

Well.. The dudes did have a death flag on them when he said "If both of us are alive." Not surprised the driver got killed.
Glad we get to hear the opening now though, it's actually kinda good. It has the same singer as Tokyo Ghoul's theme song and reminds me a lot of Tokyo Ghoul's theme song.
But oh great, slow episode and then he goes to kill the dude and he's being whipped.. Glad to see that the driver and Bruno's father got avenged though. Wonder how he's gonna take out the other two men who killed his family though..
