Hi all.

I was curious as to in what order I should watch Ghost in the Shell.

Thanks.

Watchig something in the release order is never a bad choise. So start wih the pre 2000 movie.

Yeah, I was thinking about that, but I thought I'd see if there was a chronological order people recommend so as to understand the story more easily.

There's a remake version of the original movie called ''2.0'' and then go for Stand Alone Complex.

Personally, I found the original movie much better looking than the remake. I would just skip 2.0 altogether.
Afaik there isn't much of a chronological order regarding GitS. The movies, Stand Alone Complex and Arise have stories unrelated to each other expect for having the same characters and be in the same universe.
I would go with the release order myself if you are completely new to the franchise.

There are three separate continuities for Ghost in the Shell (GitS):

Oshii films:
Ghost in the Shell (1995) > GitS 2: Innocence (2004)

Stand Alone Complex (SAC): (2002-2006)
Ghost in the Shell: SAC (TV) > GitS: SAC 2nd GiG (TV) > [url=GitS SAC: Solid State Society (film)[/url]

Arise: (2013-2015)
Arise: Border (films #1, 2, 3, 4 ) => GitS Arise: Alternative Architecture (TV) [Eps 9 & 10 are new content - eps 1-8 are the Border films cut up and reordered.] > Ghost in the Shell (2015 film)

All make homage to the original 1995 Oshii film (though the manga actually precedes all that,) so it makes sense to at least start there.

Arise seemed to derive a lot of things from all the previous works too, but it 'takes place' while the team is still new, unlike the films and SAC. I haven't seen the 2015 film yet, I'm not sure if it actually ends up connecting back to the original film the way MAL has it listed.

Unless someone who's seen the film can confirm that, it's probably best to leave Arise till last.

There are also a bunch of recaps and minor shorts that I've neglected to list.

I think this covers it. You can go with any continuity, really, but because they seem to derive from and pay homage to their predecessors, release-order will let you catch those small nods and similarities easier.

Or you might want to save the more acclaimed/polished entries for later.

You can start with the 1995 movie or Stand Alone Complex (2002). The 1995 movie and GitS 2: Innocence are on a slightly different timeline to the SAC series, being more based on the manga.

Since this question has been asked a multitude of times already, I'm gonna lock this thread and refer to this post which was pretty comprehensive and hopefully answers questions regarding the Ghost in the Shell universe chronology.
