| Well, personally I think it a matter of how it's introduced and executed by said character. Generally, it sorta adds to the cool factor of a cool character but overall cigarettes don't equal cool. The character might be just smoking a blunt to relax, killing time. That just shows their chill, which might be cool but meh... not particularly. A good example is actually one of my favorite characters. Shizuo Heiwajima from the Durarara!! series. If you have watched Durarara!! you probably get the concept but anyway.. Not really much of a spoiler but just incase~ Basically, the cigarette was part of his signature which pretty much let fans know things were going down. Much like say seeing Goku go SSJ, which could tell fans "Ohhhh... fight about to get serious now!! Kick his ass Goku!!!" All dependant on context and the character. |

| First of all, smoking is disgusting, addictive and deadly habit, someone who has never smoked should never do so and if you do, try to quit asap. I say that as someone who does, although I always try to stop and give up after a few weeks/months. Depending on the character, smoking can look like a lot of different things. Sometimes it looks cool, yeah, but in some cases, like Satou from Welcome to the NHK, it shows how little control he has over his own life and just looking at his ashtray makes us understand what kind of personality and life this guy has. A type of smoker I haven't seen in anime is one who smokes to keep his calm, getting his thoughts together while he's enjoying some relaxing alone time smoking a cigarette. Some anime, like Gintama, while also having characters look cool while smoking, also use the habit to comedic effect, like the episode where Hijikata is forced to quit after they pass a planet wide anti smoking law. After he is unable to do so, he resorts to traveling to another planet just to get his fix. A healthier option would be to have a character hold a Pocky i his or her mouth the entire time, although I don't think getting diabetes from all that sugar is a smart idea either. |

| It simply depends on how cool the character is. Lindow from God Eater is only cooler for smoking because he does it (and everything) with such a cool and calm attitude. Mello's ally from Death Note isn't cool for smoking because he hardly has enough screen time to make much of an impression. |
