I'm a huge fan of funny but emotional shows and from what I've heard of clannad I think I'd love it, here's the problem. Before I was into watching anime, me and my friend where talking about forms of media (movies, TV shows, games, ext) that have made us cry, and he brought up clannad. I was interested to see what it was that made him cry so I asked him to explain the show for me, so he did, he told me the big things that happen. Thing is, now that I'm into anime, I feel like I can't watch and enjoy it as much as everyone else because I already know what happens, is it still worth watching?

Since you like drama anime then I'll say yes. You have no idea about how many dramatic and sad situations that anime offers to you.

And well, don't worry about it. I've met people who have cried with Clannad (and After Story) everytime they rewatch it, so knowing what will happen isn't really a problem in my opinion.

Angel Beats is in your favorites. Clannad is written by the same person. What do you think?

I would still highly recommend it even if you do the know gist of what's going to happen. You should still be able to enjoy it.

The first season of Clannad starts and finishes (more-or-less) like a standard school romcom.

The main emotional parts and when Clannad goes from being 'good' to being a 'masterpiece' is when you get to 'After Story'.

I don't think it matters too much if you know what's going on. I knew spoilers and stuff before going in (YouTube and it's stupid video recommendations spoiled it) and I still loved it. I'd say give it a go... Just don't give up on the first season. After Story is where all the good shits at XD. It's one of the few shows to make me cry both in and out of anime.

The most emotional part of Clannad, at least for me, isn't the events that happen, but how the characters, especially the main character Tomoya, deals with these events. Even with knowing the key events, I'd still say it would be a worthwhile watch.

Watching Tomoya (MC) live day to day and how he has no one other than a few friends whom he cherishes is very sad as they are all leave after the first season, leaving him on his own with Nagisa.

It is a sad anime because you get attached to Tomoya (Not so much Nagisa, at least in my opinion) and watching him struggle in life is very saddening. I think you should watch it

So you asked him to talk about why he liked the show, he started to spoil a ton of shit, and you just sat there and didn't stop him. Wtf lol

Cant tell based on your list. If you like SoL Drama then sure give it a try.

Try clannad if you like it then proceed to after story. Its one of the best anime here .

Clannad is average , After Story is a masterpiece that actually deserves #1 rank here .

I'm a big romcom watcher but Clannad was a bust for me. Really. Over. Rated.

Six episodes of wooden starfish. I mean, if someone were tasked to sit down and come up with the boring-ist thing possible for 6 episodes they couldn't, cannot possibly do better (or rather, worse). Well, short of repeating something 8 times (Endless Eight arc of Suzumiya Haruhi S2 which was by the same studio... hmmmm....)

To be fair, I did like the Kotomi arc (specifically her background story). And actually Starfish Girl (Fuuko) was my favorite character despite her horridly boring arc. It's a pity she was so ill-served. Maybe Okabe from Steins;Gate can rescue her from that horrible show...

Another thing is the soft pastel colors put you to sleep (not joking).

Then there are the EYES.

Most people like Clannad because of Afterstory. First season was mostly familiarizing you with the characters to set up for the drama in the second.

That is true. For myself I looked very carefully at AF (read many, many reviews) and much of what was said in the negative ones resonated enough with me that I'm afraid it's going to be a long, long time before I'll even consider adding AF to my PTW -- even if it IS relatively better than its predecessor.

There were a couple of memorable episodes in clannad but mostly it was pretty boring with terrible art and it did not have a strong emotional impact on me at all, the worst episodes were without doubt the last ten or so in the second season. I think it's one of the most overrated anime out there.

I think it's worth considering/trying. I don't know what you got spoiled, but I think of Clannad as an experience. If you got spoiled a lot then you might only want to watch it if you don't mind rewatching things.

Actually after visiting your profile, I don't recommend you to watch it. If you're going to watch it dubbed, you're probably better off not watching it at all. I mean I haven't seen all of it dubbed but once you are able to translate "Why not, I've got nothing to lose from it." into "Why not, they're not going get any bigger." or something similar I fear for the quality.
