Grimgar of Feels...just damn. Despite its slow pacing and somewhat "boring" moments, I have actually grown to like this series a lot more than I thought I would and this episode has made quite glad that I stuck with it this far. I have actually grown to appreciate shows like this where it slows down things so that you can take in more of what the characters are doing and how they develop so overall, a very lovely episode for me.
Don't believe the hype.

Seriously, shut up about the insert songs. All of them are not only amazing as songs, but every single one of them fit the tone and mood of the scene they were played in. The insert songs make this masterpiece of an anime even better. It adds a level of excellence to every scene they used one. These scenes would have already been amazing without them but with the insert songs they are even better. It is very rare for me to ever praise the music in an anime because it isnt something i am actively looking for but this really stood out.

This anime continues to show why its the best anime this season with its strong character interactions and beautiful dialogue. The visuals as usual stand out so much and make this beautiful show even more beautiful. People complain about the slow pace but really that just allows the anime to take its time to really develop these characters and it really paid off. The best word to describe this anime is "beautiful" because every aspect of the anime is just that.
Grimgar season 2 please!!!!

This may have already been discussed (I don't have the time or patience to read every comment), but I find Haru and Yume a much better couple then Haru and Mary. Before I get any hate, yes I do know that this is not a romance anime but if there isn't any romance then why would the show highlight it in a few of the scenes? Anyway, Yume has been beside Haru from the beginning, always stuck up for him, always fought along side him, and I fail to realise just why Haru would 'pick' Mary over Yume (plus I find Yume the more likable, fun one out of the two). Mary was just kind of put in half way through and has had much less time to develop as a character when compared to Yume. Finally, and I don't know whether this is intentional or not, but they wear the same colours which could indicate their relationship growing closer or something.

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to get my opinion across.

Side note NOT RELATED TO HAI TO GENSOU NO GRIMGAR at all.
I swear that in every anime I watch the main character gets with the girl that I don't want him to, some examples off the top of my head, Strike the Blood; he should have got with the blond one. Akame ga Kill; should have gotten with Akame. Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai; the one the guy had a crush on since the beginning. Golden Time; the one he knew before he got amnesia. Nagi no Asukara; should have got with the girl that didn't go underwater and not grow up (I think she had blue hair). The list goes on.

Ok what the hell, did Mary getting shot with an arrow happen in the LN? Because I don't remember that. I don't remember being that scared for Mary in the Goblin fights, this made my heart drop thinking the anime was going with a different scenario and killing her off too :O!!!

The goblin leader hits her with a throwing knife, Haru does get pretty desperate at that moment.

Thanks for the answer, I don't legitimately remember that part in the LN, so for some reason I thought it was anime original. Good to know either way, thanks again.

As for the inset songs, I thought they fit well into this episode. In some episodes (I think one or two of them) they were misplaced or just too damn long, but they worked well in this episode. I am still loving the pacing. I knew what I was getting into when I watched this anime, since I am familiar with the LN's pacing haha, sometimes it can be boring, but most of the time I am just enjoying the ride. Also the art is still amazing to me, I love the backgound art.

And jeez, I see the same people always hating on anime in different anime discussions. Kaoshin is always hating in Grimgar and Erased episode discussion threads. If you don't like the shows don't watch them. Instead of watching every week, knowing you absolutely hate these shows to the core (from what you describe in your posts), then shit-posting how garbage the shows are every episode. If you don't like both of these shows and your in episode 8, why even watch them at this point. You honestly just sound like a hipster to me that likes to hate on shows that have decent reception in the MAL community. It seriously comes off that way. Also, just because I have a low post count Kaoshin does not mean I have not watched anime for almost my entire life (27 yrs old here). I also have been on MAL for years now, I just decided to join a while ago to keep track on my anime/manga I have read/watched, so your comment about post count correlating to knowing how to post on MAL (which anyone can do whether they been on this site for a week or yrs) or how much anime they have watched is invalid and ignorant.

My favourite episode of the series actually I'm surprised a lot of people didn't like it. I loved how you can see the group working together and avoiding mistakes that they made last time. The symbolism used with the goblins playing chess meaning they aren't as stupid as the other ones was well done.

I'm glad they finally accepted Manatos death combined with the music it made for a very emotional scene. 5/5

Good episode. I swear every few episodes has a sequence that feels exactly like the end of an anime, then you remember they'll be back tirelessly killing goblins next week and it's bittersweet. The grind never ends for them, depressing way to make a living, especially when they keep getting glimpses that these goblins aren't so different than them.

The big goblin dying was also sad, he's like Moguzo.

R.I.P. my blue brother.
He was hard on the goblins but he had to be to keep the team strong.

He went back to set up one last offense, but also to reminisce about his comrades.
He knew he was a goner, him sitting there looking at the chess board is so sad, I know people who aren't smart enough to even understand the rules.

The 2nd half was nice, much emotions.

I swear, half of this show's soundtrack is just insert songs. Overall nice episode, we slowly get to see the team develop more and more, covering each others backs and memorizing goblin patterns. Mary seems to have gotten comfortable enough with everyone so far, especially Haru, seeing how they've both been in similar situations. The mourning for Manato stretched out a little bit too much, but at least it appropriately ended this arc.
Also, the eyecatch this episode managed to give me more emotions than the entirety of the series so far.

You know... those 8 eps were just the first light novel volume, don't need to blame the light novel writer, blame A-1, usually a light novel volume is adapted in 4 eps, this one could be done in 5.... so, it's not the writer faults for it been slow, really the book could be read in a afternoon (I read it) so you don't have that slow felling.... anyway, this show is like that for several reasons already posted in other topics, it was talking about the insert songs but it explain somethings....

_
And why this show have many insert songs? because this music group is under Toho, and Toho is main investor of this show.
And some people would notice in episode 2 and 4's insert part, some character's mouth seems spoke something right? well, according to Shihoru's VA, the staff actually done the dialogue recording,
https://twitter.com/teruiharuka/status/688749847201972224
But since Toho want to push the music group, and Overlap(publisher of Grimgar LN) is very small company unlike Kadokawa, plus Grimgar LN series sales were very low(can't even break 10k before anime start airing), so staff have no choice but mute ep 2&4 scene's dialogue.

This show is a low-budget show and the directors couldn't do as they want because their investor wants to push its music group.... that's way we have so many insert songs, slow pace and poor animation.

True. Anyway, as much as I'm loving the overall feel of this series I wish they wouldn't milk silences so much and maybe, if im being greedy, dial up the action a bit but if they did that i guess it would be the same as many other shows. either way it was a good episode and they got their revenge finally so im happy. heres hoping for a second season quick with only afew episodes left

I had figured it was basically A-1 pictures being A-1 Pictures but there's delicious irony in them having done to them what their parent company has done to so many other studios shows in forcing things onto the staff for the sake of pure commercialism. Kind of like a taste of their own medicine.

This is also yet again why I can barely take modern anime seriously anymore because production committees just do this to show after show not even giving a damn about anything but their own commercial interests and directors and staff have little to no say. I've watches some Western shows like Hell On Wheels that like to have an insert song in every episode but it pretty much always fits the mood and always come at the end, never being played loudly over important dialogue or forcing it to be muted entirely. I think this is going to become a trend that becomes yet another big polarizing problem for shows considering the rampant popularity of composers like Hiroyuki Sawano who love to push the vocal songs that often drown out and distract from scenes in shows as well as the explosion of popularity in music anime that is going to lead for more of a push in vocal songs in general. Just more of that excessive commercialization of anime this decade that threatens to drown out any attempts for staff teams to run a show the way they'd hope and be creative.

This was definitely the best episode yet! The first half was amazing with all the action and seeing them have some troubles but were able to overcome them and get revenge for Manato. I got a little scared there for a moment when Mary got shot in the back but luckly everything went good for them. I liked the insert song in the second half but felt the one in the first half didn't really fit there and I didn't really like that one. The second half with the music and overall atmosphere really made for a sad yet happy scene seeing everyone getting their badges and chipping in for another one for Manato to have which really hit me in the feels. It was nice to see everyone's emotions and seeing Mary smile and omg I am now shipping Haru and Mary so hard now! But yea overall just an amazing episode that honestly looked like it could have been the last one, I cannot wait to see what they have in store for the next episodes now that this arc is done.

Easily my favorite episode yet. We had a great action scene that shows how much farther the team has come, we got a nice remembrance for manato, the two character conversations are back like what Hal (im just going to call him that now) and manato used to have, and it is winter! I am totally addicted to anime with winter settings. Please give me a list of anime with winter settings to anyone who may read this :D 5/5

worst part about the insert songs for me isn't even the song i actually like them it's just how long they go on for and how frequent they appear aka every episode this week would of been fine with just the ending instrumental into the vocal version.

still they officially are the goblin slayers ant none of them left or barely at this rate, part of me still feels bad for big blue was just playing a game a chess

This show started out so poorly, but it just gets better and better as time goes on.

This is the first time the insert songs were used correctly (even if the second one technically isn't an insert song). They both fit the tone of their respective scenes, and they were paired with scenes that had actual impact on the story. For me, they actually added rather than detracted from the scenes they were in, even though there were two of them.

The animation was a little choppy at points, but there was a lot of cool details here in the fight choreography that made the fight scene a delight. I love the part where Shihoru charges in to get a better shot at hitting her target, and a goblin notices that one of the weakest (defensively) party members has gone to the front lines and immediately goes for the backstab, only to be stopped by Haruhiro.
The way Grimgar handles the team fights are astounding really.

Someone (episode director?) went really ham with their 3D camera movements this episode, which worked sometimes and didn't work others. The scene in the latter part of the episode where the camera has a birds eye view of the team and zooms down on them as a single snowflake falls into frame was a nice touch. I can't talk about every cool animation addition in this episode because we would be here all day, but there were a lot of them.

My only real flaw with this episode was that the tones of the first and second half didn't mesh at all. The sombre scene at Manato's grave, while emotionally gripping, took a while to get into because of the fast-paced fight scene that just preceded it. I saw it coming a mile away, but it kinda got to me when they placed that volunteer badge on Manato's grave.

There were some really great emotional pay-offs this episode too, including the previously mentioned one. The way the team handled Mary getting shot showed brilliantly (once again) how they have grown individually and as a party when comparing how they handled Manato's similar situation a few episodes prior. Mary 's development as well is handled really well, just because of how gradual her development is. It's only been 3 or so episodes since we have known her, but it feels like she's been there the whole time.

There is so much to talk about with just this one episode that I've barely scratched the surface and yet this has already turned into a fucking essay. Grimgar just might become my AoTS (as of what I'm watching right now, I'm not following Showa Genroku on a weekly basis).

Seriously folks, that song at the start of the battle ruins it enough to remove 1 star to 4/10. Yes, the teamwork kind of loses for a while at the middle ( I think they put some new things in the battle? idk. Already forgot what the LN write about the battle).

This week's episode was really good.
The action scenes were actually interesting, especially when you can see the element of teamwork among the party. Agree with some others who say it could've done without the insert song, or maybe with a more serious BGM, but overall I think it worked out too.

The scene at Manato's grave was just perfect. Lovely yet sad version of the song by Shihoru, and the monologue was simply touching with a hint of pain. A beautiful way to pay tribute and bid farewell to a valuable friend who played a big part in getting them to where they are now. Rest in peace Manato.

If I had anything that bugged me this episode, it'd just be the subtitles which called Haru 'Hal'. But that's not the series fault :)

Lovely scene at the end with them giving Manato his badge.

is no one infuriated how slow this anime is? had me nodding off...

do you realize they've been fighting goblins for more than 50% of the anime? what level are they and how much experience do goblins give you? wouldn't they be far experienced already by now? how much are those goddamn volunteer medals? what the fuck is grimgar? what timeline are they from before they came to grimgar? what happened to the rest of the other characters that were with them from the start? how long are they going to mourn manato? it's been 8 fucking episodes -- are they going to cry every single time with that depressing insert song in the BG for every episode? how long are we going to keep saying manato is a good guy? can we get over it already? they don't even know the guy or where he's really from. can mary use other defensive magic other than heal? who the fuck is Hal?

these questions are yet to be answered -- GOOD questions with no answers in sight. and we are already on episode 8.

what i learned from this anime for far: death sucks. well, no shit.

honestly, this should have been the last episode. i haven't read the LN, but i don't plan on reading it anytime soon if it's this excruciating.

Pretty nice episode. Interesting how the goblins were observing how humans fighting and using the information in this episode's fight.
The insert songs are not that bad, just think the episode with or without songs could've been equally good.
Don't think that there will be any romance with 4 episodes left or just with how this series goes overall but still ship Yume x Haru. Kinda surprising, but obligatory Yume's ass shots count = 0.

is no one infuriated how slow this anime is? had me nodding off...

do you realize they've been fighting goblins for more than 50% of the anime? what level are they and how much experience do goblins give you? wouldn't they be far experienced already by now? how much are those goddamn volunteer medals? what the fuck is grimgar? what timeline are they from before they came to grimgar? what happened to the rest of the other characters that were with them from the start? how long are they going to mourn manato? it's been 8 fucking episodes -- are they going to cry every single time with that depressing insert song in the BG for every episode? how long are we going to keep saying manato is a good guy? can we get over it already? they don't even know the guy or where he's really from. can mary use other defensive magic other than heal? who the fuck is Hal?

these questions are yet to be answered -- GOOD questions with no answers in sight. and we are already on episode 8.

what i learned from this anime for far: death sucks. well, no shit.

honestly, this should have been the last episode. i haven't read the LN, but i don't plan on reading it anytime soon if it's this excruciating.

Out of those 14 questions, only one of them is a "good" question.
Does priest, have any other defensive spells?

It seems like the people hating on this show are a minority. I've always assumed otherwise since half of the posts every episode is about how the insert songs ruin the whole mood.

5/5 will definitely watch till the end. This and ERASED are the winners of this season by far excluding sequels.
