Hello guys,

I'm pretty sure that there is already a subject about this, but I couldn't find one. So I was wondering if I should really watch Gintama, because it is the second time that I drop the show (in just 5 episodes) each time I fall asleep watching it. I heard the show is suppose to make you laugh your ass off, but yet it didn't and I find the jokes very childish. Can someone tell me if it changes in the near episodes or I really should drop it once and for good?

Thanks a lot, and don't hate me please :'(

Have a nice day :D

Yeah but I'm afraid that I will pass onto something really good, since it seems everybody is watching and enjoying it :/

I liked it from episode 1 but even I found it boring at some times for like first 20 episodes. 25 is the first ep that really stands out from the rest, first 20 are for character introductions mainly since there are many relevant characters in this anime.

It starts of slow with the first 20 episodes being meh, gets better for some after that. I recommend watching it until ep 30, and if you are still bored, just drop it.

Yeah that's what I thought, thanks a lot again. I'll stick to it and if I still don't like it around the episode 30 I will drop it for good, I hope I'll like tho! :)

In the 20s is where it starts being a bit funny. Episode 25 in particular is a fan favorite from the beginning episodes.

Don't force yourself to watch it if you don't like it just drop it.
Gintama is a semi-episodic anime so you can skip some episodes to see if the comedy improve.

Starts being better in episode 30. If you arrive there and isn't great enough, wait for episode 58. There's were the first serious arc starts. Take in mind that serious Gintama is not as good, though. But it gets better. Once you arrive to the 300th episode.

Any Gintama fan, ever

I've heard a lot of people saying episode 25 and other saying 30, so I guess it's around that, but it's still long to be good, why can't it be good at the beginning x)

I don't know to be honest, it's just the inconsistent stuff I always end reading in all the threads regarding this issue.
And you always have the option to watch tons of other anime first.

If you don't really find it funny, maybe Japanese tsukkomi and slapstick humor just isn't for you.

If you can't stand it, then why bother? If you're going to slug your way and sleep your way through a show just to get to the good parts, then the show obviously isn't for you. Gintama's not all about the comedy arcs. I enjoy Gintama for its action arcs despite there being other shows better than it in terms of action, but I like the samurai aspect of Gintama.

As others have said, Gintama is realllllyyyy slow.

Also, if you expect a 300+ ongoing anime to be great at the start, you're sadly mistaken. Bleach, Naruto, and the rest weren't that great in the beginning either. Same for One Piece.

Gintama it's slow, you need to watch a lot of episodes before it gets good, if you can't stand it just drop it, no need of wasting your time.

Don't watch Gintama from the first episode, It's the mistake that many people does.

You should watch funny arc first.

Here is my advice:
1- watch more 10 episodes to get to know some more characters, watch 1 every week if you want.
2- skip to the first movie .
3- after you finish it go to the Owee arc ( episode 98-99 ).
4- if you dont find that funny then quit the show.

IMO, Gintama gets better when it stop being 100% episodic and becomes a "short arcs based" anime (yet the standalone episodes stays). And that happens since episode 30 approx.

But if you don't like the comedy (though the first episodes are the laziest ones in that aspect, you can try any other comedy arc/episode that has been recommended here) nor the episodic structure then don't push yourself. It's simply not for you and there is nothing you can do.

Nobody will hate you for that unless you become a obnoxious idiot who bashes in almost every Gintama thread, obviously :D

Gintama has a mediocre beginning, but gets progressively better.

Watch episode 188 (it's a stand alone episode). If it bores you, then Gintama is probably not your cup of tea.

Watch the first 10-20 episodes first, you don't have to marathon it though because like every other users said the first part is quite slow and boring and no one deny that. Just watch it one by one, slowly until you get firm grasp about the main characters background. Though Gintama has some serious/action arcs and even plotline however it is more well known for its comedy so then go watch some of its best comedic episodes/arcs.

Well if you still find it boring then I think it is wiser to drop it maybe this anime is just not for you, rather than wasting your time for something you frankly don't enjoy. Better use it to find any other great shows out there that suit more with your taste (I'll do the same thing if i were you).

Because it's funny, everyone can easily get hooked. Me myself like Gintama because I watched episode 1 of enchosen 'Kintama'. And it works on many of my friends. They didn't even watch 50 early episodes. You can recognize characters like Gintoki, Katsura, Hijikata, Kondo, and Hasegawa without their background.

Thanks for your suggestion but I think i'll like it more if I start from the beginning, so I won't miss any of the character presentation :/

I've started Gintama recently as well, currently on ep 116, and had the same problem as you did. I was bored of it when i started, at around ep 15 i wasn't having that much fun with it, then i came here and read members comments and fast forward a bit to ep 25, had a blast with it, returned to where i was and didn't stopped til now.

It has it's down moments, some episodes are boring, some are awesome (ep 28 is still my favorite), my take is that is worth to watch for those priceless moments, and also the first episodes are nice to get the little background of the characters, i'd say don't drop them, fast forward a bit to see if the more funny eps are your taste, if they are, resume where you were, if they aren't, this anime really isn't for you.

Yeah I'll do that, because I've watch a bit more recently and it is still boring, but sometimes it cracks me a smile.

If you want to like it, you should watch likeable episodes first, I think you were contradicting yourself when you said you will like it more if you start from the beginning.

You seriously don't want to like it if you drop it again.

If the first 20 episode even makes you smile, you'll love the later episodes. The thing about Gintama is that it just gets better and better. The quality of the anime improves at the 25-ish episode. Then the quality jumps again at 50-ish mark. Then it jumps again at 75, then again at 100. I was in the same position at you. The early episodes felt like a grind, but I watched a tiny clip from Gintama a long time ago and my goal was to reach that point. By the time I reached that point, I realized that I'm already loving Gintama more than anything else.

Long story short: Give it another chance :D
