Spotlight Manga: Tekkon Kinkreet MAL Manga Information Page: Tekkon Kinkreet Score: 8.32 (scored by 1059 users) Ranked: #303 Popularity: #1643 Original Spotlight Thread - Black & White For the next two weeks I would like to have a discussion about the manga that focuses on the key elements that we here on MAL use to critically rate a manga: Art, Characters, Story, and Enjoyment. I would like everyone to approach this thread as if you were going to write a review and structure your initial post like this: Art - insert rating Characters - insert rating Story - insert rating Enjoyment - insert rating Art - discuss any pros and cons of the art styling used in the series, try to include some specifics. Character - describe any of the things you liked or didn't care for in regards to specific characters in the series etc... If you are having trouble writing up a review or coming up with specific pros and cons, please don't worry. Just do the best you can with it and if you can only write two or three sentences about any of the 4 elements then that's OK. Not everyone here is currently at a level which will allow them to articulate their thoughts and opinions. After your initial post is made you can feel free to civilly discuss issues of contention. I am sure there will be many opinions expressed here that some of us will disagree upon and criticise and it is for that reason that this entire club exists. So I hope everyone has fun and I am really looking forward to seeing how this discussion will develop. |

| This is an easy yes for me. The primary point here for me is the art - it's gorgeous, European-influenced, sketchy and dynamic. The action scenes have a sense of motion conveyed not only by the art itself but by the arrangements of panels on the page and the composition and angles used. Panel composition bends the city around the movements of the two main characters and the design of the city itself is impressive - decaying buildings stacked on one another haphazardly, massive overhanging signs, different styles of architecture. Which is important since this urban sprawl in many ways motivates the central actions of the characters. Also interesting is the way the city is used - it's not a backdrop for the action, it's a vertical environment the leads know every level of, the city seen more from the level of the skyline than from the street. This familiarity with the city is important since the major antagonist of this work is a gangster who seeks to gentrify most of the city. Black and White resist this by attacking his men in a series of increasingly violent encounters. At the same time, Black is undergoing a major psychological disturbance as the violence and anger threaten to overwhelm him. These two major narrative threads are entwined throughout the manga and both are weighted equally. It's not tightly plotted by any means, but it does come together organically from the actions and desires of the characters. etc. If this thread gets more attention might write more about the characters and story but it's 3:30 am and I don't feel like doing that in a thread with 0 replies right now. |
