Definitely Planetes. The setting is plausible and can happen in the near future.

I like the setting in Planetes too. It's not too futuristic & it feels like seeing the real future.

None. The world and setting is inextricably attached to the story.

Not always. I am sure you will see how both of them are two separate things overtime.

Nope. For all the series I've watched, if the story didn't interest me, the world couldn't interest me either. The world as an individual factor can pull some consideration, but not much if the story doesn't work accordingly.

Fate/Zero, I was far more interested in how magic and its users affected the world than I was in the holy grail war.

Shinsekai Yori, didn't care much for the characters, but I wanted to learn about mankinds faye outside of their little plot of land.

Obviously Pokemon.

Mahouka.

The world-building is glorious, and while the story itself is rather weak, the concepts introduced in the Mahouka universe are really interesting. and the girls

Okay so i have a question about this. When i was watching mahouka, i was confused on how much time and exposition they spent on explaining how the magic in it works.
But to me it always seemed absolutely goofy and unintentionally funny.
Kinda like a explanation in star trek it just sounded like gibberish "the flux compensator creates a anti gravitanional hyperdrive that alters the tine continuum in a crossdimenional blablabla"
Then when i read the episode discussion threads the people who read the light novel were always shaming the anime for its poor representation of how the magic works.
Is the world in mahouka really that interesting? To me it appeared more like a "this works because overpowered main character wants it to"

I really like magic-systems that go into detail and make sense within their own rules, like for example the force in star wars.
Should i read the light novels?
Yes you should try the light novels. They are superior in every aspect and you won't be disappointed with the explanations of the magic-science system. If anything you might feel a lil overwhelmed with how detailed and complicated the system really is.

As much as I loved it's story, I'd really like to know how humanity and the human society evolved to become what it was..
the manga says it was through genetic engineering

The various game "worlds" of the two Sword Art Online shows.

Too bad, the world building on that show is atrocious.

Though, Log Horizon gave me that game "world" fix I need months after...

(Thanks for nothing, SAO!)
where'd you find the katawa shoujo gif?
Also, i think the world-building wasn't as atrocious,as much as it was just copying other caught-in-game series, except maybe the few fantasuy-elements
It's okay to smirk

Psycho-Pass - loved the cyber-punk setting, although the storyline was entertaining enough.
Claymore - wanted to learn more about the world outside the continent.
Fate/series - couldn't care less about the Holy Grail War, but I was interested in the idea of an urban-fantasy world.

Shinsekai Yori. I found the main girl quite obnoxious and I can't say any character grew on me. Anyway the setting was definitely interesting and the reason I kept watching.

There are just too many mysterious and creepy things in Pokémon. For example: "Shedinja's hard body doesn't move - not even a twitch. In fact, its body appears to be merely a hollow shell. It is believed that this Pokémon will steal the spirit of anyone peering into its hollow body from its back."

Full Metal Alchemist.
It's probably because i'm watching Brotherhood for the first time but the attention the creators have given to the world is quite impressive.
But i hate the humour and dislike most of the characters so something needs to keep the show interesting.

Mushishi, which is a problem because it means the characters didn't get developed.

If I care more about the setting, it's probably a sign the story or the characters don't work.

So Ra No Wo To defenntly, shame they went o the route of CGDCT rather than explaining well how the war was or how that world worked, it would have been such a cool anime if they did that...

Shinsekai Yori. The story is good, but the world is very interesting especially the events that transpired from now to when the anime takes place. Which is about 1,000 years from now.

An anime that would fit the criteria for me would probably be Spice and Wolf. I really loved the medieval setting and atmosphere but didn't really care much for the story. It's more of getting engrossed in the setting rather than the story that takes place in it.

Charlotte

Also Attack on Titan to an extent (*don't shoot me*)...although I really like the series, both the story and characters aren't particularly unique. We have the formulaic "angry-protagonist-seeks-revenge-against-enemy-who-ruined-his-family-and/or- life-and-luckily-has-some-weird-power-to-help-him-achieve-his-goal". Really, it's the world of AoT itself that makes the anime stand out against others of its genre.

I would like to be in a world where the only way to survive is to master 3 dimensional gear and become a badass person that is trapped in the walls full of monsters.

Yesh, I am a bit of a masochist. But, the world of attack on titan was just so beautiful.

Sakasama no Patema

The story is actually set between two worlds one of which is upside down.
And it's quite fascinating setting, just watch trailers by the link I've posted.

Well, i just wanted to post this, i agree. The world is really Bizarre and beautiful. The whole upside down aspect really caught my attention and not gonna lie i even felt dizzy just by looking and imagining at the 'height' scenes when they fall to sky and such.

Another one maybe the upper world at Texhnolyze. Looks really like a truly peaceful world but human race actually suffer and moving closer toward extinction.
