Ep 1 I think this very well may be the sleeper hit of the season. I'd glad that I was sorely mistaken thinking this was some kind of reverse harem situation. I was wrong about it being edo-period though, which probably should have been obvious since it has Shouwa in the name. Yeah I did not think I would enjoy this as much as I did, the art of rakugo itself was really entertaining, although the stories did seem a bit cliche I still laughed when Yotaro was doing his first rakugo and said his cabinets were made of blue cotton linen XD The characters are really interesting IMO, I quite like Yotaro, he's not over-confident, but he's not a complete doormat. His master and the red hair girl are both really interesting too. OST is pretty great and used effectively. Also not a mistake that the first ep is 45+ mins long apparently it's just for this first episode. Yeah just good stuff with this episode, if Boku Machi doesn't live up to the hype, this could very well be AOTS. Also DAT JAZZ ED :D |

Episode 1: Oh DEEN. Trying so hard. I had to suppress some winces at the start with the off-model and jerky movements, but it got much better! :D I thoroughly enjoy rakugo, and having entire segments of it was so good. Overall, what a massively interesting show! Perfect casting. Intriguing characters. Nice atmosphere with some intrigue. I'm well up for this. Fingers crossed. |

Ep 2 What a great show. It's rare that we have something that doesn't rely on flashy action scenes or really intense melodrama. Just good ol' dialogue and character development. So we got a flashback episode this time around it was interesting to see Yakumo as a youth, although his name seems to be something different during that time same thing from Sukeroku... I guess name change is a common thing for people taking part in Rakugo. Yeah loved Sukeroku's performance, while Yakumo wasn't too great. Yeah really liking this so far, great to have a josei anime for this season, has such a different and innovative vibe. Ed from last ep was great, liking this new one too... sounds like simpler times lol. |

Episode 2: Blisssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss what a great flashback. I foresee gigantic heartbreak real soon though. Dying to know the circumstances surrounding Sukeroku/Hatsutarou's death. So impressive how with such subtlety Ishida Akira-san can portray bad!rakugo in the flashback. *v* Ahh, amazing~~ I looked up some other rakugo on youtube because now I'm really interested thanks to this show. Might've been just the ones I watched/listened to, but good grief, they talk about 37 times faster than they do in this anime lolwut. I'm glad they keep things at a moderate pace here xD;; |

Ep 3 DEM WAR-TIME STRUGGLES DAT CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT DAT BROMANCE Yeah unless Erased really nails it's ending or Dimension W get it's shit together and makes really good use of it's setting and premise, this show right here is gonna be AOTS. I'm loving this flashback and seeing Yakumo's development and progression into a pro and his bromance with Sukeroku. Looking forward to who the girl is in the future. Also glad to see the ED from the first ep is now the OP. Probably mentioned it before, but this show easily has the best OST of the season. |

Ep 4 Seems like Miyokichi is going to be an important part of this flashback. Perhaps the mother of Konatsu? Which means she eventually ends up getting with Sukeroku or perhaps Yakumo was the father all a long and he lied to her for some reason? Either way I don't see this romance ending well. Also nice to see Sukeroku taking his name, I wonder when Yakumo will have his turn too. |

Ep 5 This show is really does a great job of fleshing out the characters. It was obvious Yakumo was feeling somewhat inadequate in comparison to Sukeroku both as a performer and as a man and this episode really did a great job of addressing that and having him overcome it and become more confident... I still feel like the Miyokichi romance subplot is gonna end in a tragic note, but I kind of hope I'm wrong. |

Ep 6 Yeah Kiku/Yakumo definitely is coming more into his own and finding his own style. His performance this episode was definitely his best so far. I enjoyed it even more than the one he gave in his adult years (the one where Yotaro falls asleep). We also see Miyokichi and Sukeroku getting a bit closer... Still really not looking forward to the eventual conclusion of that... As much as I'm enjoying this flashback I wonder if we're going to get back to the present timeline before the season ends. |

Episode 7: I fucking love Kiku's kitsune!face lol I SEE SO KIKU'S OFF ON A JOURNEY AND POOR MIYOKICHI'S FEELING REJECTED SO I'M GUESSING THIS IS WHERE SHE AND SUKEROKU HOOK UP. Tbh though I don't see how Kiku can have much to complain about on that count, since he's deliberately distancing himself. *le shrug* |

Ep 7 Yeah definitely seems that hes pushing her away. I like how realistic they made the breaking down of their relationship feel. It's not some big dramatic scene, it's just two people drifting away slowly. Yeah looks like Sukeroku is going to fill that gap that Kiku left. I know it's not really in Kiku's character to be more direct and straight forward, but it probably would have benefited him in this situation if he just told her he wasn't interested and wanted to pursue Rakugo more passionately. It would definitely avoid some of these hurt feelings. At the same time it's understandable that he would he would be mad at Sukeroku for being with Miyokichi since he did have some sort of pseudo-relationship with her. It's not really cool to go after your bro's ex and stuff =/ I find it hard to believe that he would react so violently and kill Sukeroku, but I guess Konatsu might have been exaggerating or extrapolating events. |

Ep 8 This show just keeps getting better. I have to say that confrontation with Miyokichi was tilting dangerously towards being a little too cliche and melodramatic, but I think they managed to pull it off. The scenes following though, just really hit home. The stuff about Sukeroku's previous mentor, the awesome jazz bar (yay for jazz!), Kiku putting Rakugo ahead of his feelings. Although it sucks, he has to give up someone he loves sometimes you have to make sacrifices to reach your goals. I just wish it wasn't being imposed on him by his master, especially when he was the one that introduced them in the first place. He should really break up with her properly though. Good to see they've both advanced too. Kiku just seems to be pushing away all the people that care about him and it's probably going to come back and bite him in the ass eventually. |

Ep 9 This show just keeps on delivering, not a single bad episode yet. This episode just hit so hard, all the buildup paying off. Even right up until the end Kiku never gave up on Sukeroku and wanted him to apologize to the Master and continue with his Rakugo. Miyokichi's relationship with Sukeroku makes so much sense now... it's just so how realistic and believable how it happened. |

Ep 10 I think this might be my favorite episode, but they've all been so good I had a hard time deciding. I feel like they paid extra attention to the backgrounds this episode, looked like oldschool paintings. Sooo yeah a lot of stuff happened Yakumo's passing was super well done, got misty eyed myself. We find out the significance of the name Sukeroku and we have Kiku meeting up with Konatsu for the first time, looks like shes taking after her father quite a bit. |

Episode 9: AKA the episode where things started hurting. ;___; Yeah, I genuinely couldn't fathom how Sukeroku and Miyokichi would end up together, but they pulled it off for sure. Superb. Episode 10: WAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH AT THE END THERE I REALLY FEARED SUKEROKU WAS ALREADY DEAD yay/boo for next episode previews lol. I'm looking forward to the next episode so much I can't even express it. Also yeah, I think they realised they have a little extra budget for the last few eps ^w^ |

Ep 11 I'm just never disappointed with this show. The reunion was amazing, Konatsu was adorable. Sukeroku was... Sukeroku lol. When they were doing the Rakugo together, performing for Konatsu it was just perfect. Miyokichi is horrible for abandoning her daughter like that especially with someone as unreliable as Sukeroku, I wonder what kind of explanation she's going to give. Only 2 more episodes left I don't want it to end T_T |

Ep 12 Dam.... Just feels I can't even with this episode. That performance by Sukeroku was just amazing. Perhaps the best in the series so far, considering the parallels with what is actually happening in the story. My opinion of Miyokichi definitely went down the drain though. Not only did she not have a good excuse for abandoning her daughter, but she tried to kill Kiku a long with herself and caused the death of Sukeroku. Looks like we're finally going back to the present story line with the finale. Can't wait to see how this wraps up. |

Ep 13 This show... AOTS it completely trumped all my expectations and came out on top. There was just so much to love about this show. The final episode gave us some closure on Kiku's arc and we moved a little into the present timeline and got teased for a second season, which is now confirmed. I gotta say the 4th wall beak (which I know happens in anime a lot, but in this case it was actually animated and directed very much towards the viewer) was brilliant. I can't wait to see more of this story. My only fear is that the next season will not be able to live up to the extraordinarily high bar set by the first As for the anime in general. The strongest part by far is the characters and it really goes to show, even if your plot is not super intricate or you don't have amazing flashy animation or fanservice, characters makes the difference between a show that is mediocre and one that is superb. The characters were handled extremely well. They felt like real people, the development was so organic. From the first episode with the long Rakugo performance the show hooks you in and just never lets go. There was not a single bad episode of this anime. Sometimes I tend to multi-task or get distracted while watching anime, but I was always fully engaged when watching this show. The emotional scenes had a strong impact, cause we actually cared about the characters, the timeskips were handled were handled well, the relationships felt real and many of the rakugo performances were very entertaining and usually helped to expand on a characters' thoughts and feelings as well. Overall I loved it. The only nitpicky complaint I have is that sometimes the animation, background etc. were not as super fluid or detailed. The production in general was not top notch, but it wasn't bad either. The music in particular was fantastic, love that Jazz OST, Op and Ed. Also the cliffhanger/sequel hook at the end. Very very small complains though. So yeah its a 9/10 for me |

Episode 2 & 3 Goddamn this was really good. I never should have written this off after one episode. The bromance is absolute greatness. I got chills after the old man and Sukeroku finally came back and reunited with the wife and Yakumo. The second episode was really solid itself, but that third was 10 out of 10 good. Really looking forward to more. |

Episode 12: ;__________________; Episode 13: You pretty much said it all battosai. Superb. I, too, am really worried the second season can't live up to this greatness, but that's a worry for another time. Honestly, the whole show was just wonderful from start to finish. DEEN had some, well, DEEN moments with the higgledy-piggeldy animation quality, but hey, overall it looked good! I can't complain. I just need Kiku/Yakumo to come to terms with Sukeroku's ghost now. I need it. ;__; That bit in the graveyard just broke my fucking heart. Urgh I don't have any more coherent words 9/10 bring on season 2 |

Episodes 4-6 I'm glad this flashback sequence is a long one. I'm definitely interested in seeing how their lives play out. The romance subplot is a nice addition as well. I loved the theatre performance as well as the most recent Rakugo performances. They are really starting to show their tremendous talent. |

Episode 7 I feel bad for Miyokichi. However, I don't really blame Kiku in any way. He has really come into his own with his performances. Dude simply has his priorities in order. Even good relationships make things messy and complicated. Episode 8 Goddamn that was good! Best episode so far. I love the relationship between Kiku and Sukeroku. I don't want to see it end. Miyokichi is even more loyal/in love with Kiku than I thought. Actually, same can be said from Kiku's end. It is going to be interesting to see what is to come in the final 1/3 of this series. |

Episode 9, 10, & 11 What is this epicnes? Fuck, I mean, I have shit to do today. Instead, I'm staying up all night because I can't stop watching this. The reunion was absolute greatness. Actually, all of Episode 11 was a masterpiece. One of the best episodes across all of anime. That dual Rakugo performance!!! Goddamn, fuck performing separately, these two should be rocking the duets. Konatsu was so precious and cute. I haven't saw such heart-warmingly epic facial expressions since Barakamon. I didn't even mention the lead up to the episode. There really is something special about the character developments, progressions, and dialogue that makes me feel as if I am actually looking into the lives of some legendary Rakugo performers. Pretty much everything is so well written and believable that I get lost in the story. The show was great until these three episodes. Now, it is just...wow! Episode 12 What...the...fuck! Damn you, Rakugo. Chills for days during this episode. Great performances, great developments, the future is looking bright and awesome. Then...such tragedy. I can't help but feel that all three of our main characters needed eachother more than they would ever know. I do have less sympathy for Miyokichi, but I still feel sorry for her at the same time. This episode was crazy. :'( |

Episode 13 Damn, that graveyard scene! A lot of emotions this episode as well. This final episode was decent enough. Unfortunately, it had to follow a fantastic early build-up and then five straight epic 10/10 quality episodes. Still, good finish to a fantastic series. So, the very first episode didn't hook me like it did you guys and gals. I didn't really know what to expect, clearly wasn't in the correct mood, and found it boring. So glad I decided to give this one another chance. The series slowly got better and better with each episode. If I had to rate individually, I'd give at least six different episodes a perfect score. The characters absolutely stole the show, even though the Rakugo performances were extremely entertaining as well. I don't have doubts for the second season. Actually, I have no doubt that it cannot live up to this one. The characters are what made the show and they are all but gone for a second season. The "new" ones are interesting enough and share ties to the old ones, but there is no way they can live up to that. It will be Garo all over again and possibly worse (depending on how much the actual performances can carry the show). I hate to be so negative on this view, but I just don't see anyway it could live up to this. So, this one gets as close as you can get to a ten. There were a couple of small things that kept it out of the top tier. The very final episode transitioning into a new series. Wish it would have just ended like this was all there was. Also, the less enjoyable first episode (for me). A couple of other small things mixed in (that every show has). Anyway, I gave it a 9/10, at 99%. |
