Thanks SheyCroix for the lovely image! You may find the Sign Up thread (along with more information about this challenge) here! Discussion is not required for completing the challenge. Use this thread to: - Ask question related to the challenge. - Ask for or give recommendations for items of the challenge list. - Post your impressions about titles you’ve read for the challenge, if you wish to. - Post badges donations for the challenge (you’re invited to!). Avoid posting unrelated stuff to the challenge, i.e. unrelated manga to the challenge, chatting between users with unrelated purposes and so on. Avoid posting spoilers when talking about a specific manga. Use spoiler tags and @username mentions to keep things tidy and please edit your post instead of double-posting! Frequently Asked Questions 1. "If I started reading something in late-December, can I use if for this challenge?" -- No. Only manga you started reading during the challenge period (January 1, 2016 - December 31, 2016). 2. "Can I use light novels for the challenge?" -- No. It only counts towards the bonus "Read a Light Novel" item. 3. "Can I use manhua/manwha/oneshots instead of serialized manga for regular items too?" -- Yes, you can. 4. "Can I use webtoons and/or ongoing manga?" -- Sure, just remember that if they are ongoing, you must be up-to-date with the latest chapter (either raws, released through scanlation or print depending on what you are using) when you declare your challenge complete. 5. "If I'm caught up with an on-going before starting the challenge and then just read a new chapter, does that count?" -- Ongoing manga that you're caught up to and read just one new chapter of does not count unless you re-read all of it. 6. "Is re-reading allowed?" -- Yes, you may re-read a manga you previously read but we invite you to use that time to read something you haven't read yet. Re-reading is mandatory if you want to pick up something again that you started last year or before and didn't finish. 7. "Can I use spin-offs/sequels towards a different challenge item?" -- Sure. If it's a separate database entry in MAL, it counts as a different manga. 8. "Can I use the same manga for various entries in the challenge?" -- No. It's one different manga per one item in your list. 9. "Can I use the genre tags in batoto/kissanime/manga-updates/etc?" -- Of course. Sometimes the genre tags vary among these websites. If you use a tag that is not listed in MAL database, please make a note of it and link to the site where it was tagged with the tag you're using. 10. "For the years, if I start a manga in 1998 and finish in 2010, it counts?" -- It wouldn't count. The years should be considered as follows: the work does not have to span the whole decade (for 1990-2000 or 2000-2010), but it should be contained within it as much as possible with just one or two years limit before or after. If it started in 87 and it finished in 91, it would be better as manga started before 1990. 11. "What counts as a cast of children?" -- Three or more main characters under the age of 12. 12. "For a non-human MC, does it have to be the narrator/focus?" -- If it's tagged as "main" in the character database, it'll count. 13. "I'm X years old, does X demographics count?" -- Shounen is intended for male audience from 8 to 18 years old. Seinen is intended for male audience in their early 20s up to their 50s. Shoujo is intended for female audience from 8 to 17 years old. Josei is intended for female audience from 16 to 45 years old. If you're in a gray area like 18 to 21 or 16 to 20, you may choose either one in the male or female audience demographics. 14. "Where can I find manga that was serialized from a one-shot?" -- Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a nifty tag in any website that can be used to search this. Here in the challenge we have compiled a list that is meant to be helpful. If you know of any other title that can be added, please suggest it on the discussion. Also, you're supposed to read the serialized manga for the challenge item, not the one shot. Note: Some of these links take you to DB entries where the one-shot is compiled.
15. You can edit your form whenever you want after posting. A basic explanation on how to use Baka-Updates courtesy of @AudioTsunami: If you are having trouble finding manga that meets the criteria for different challenges, you can use the database at mangaupdates.com, also known as baka-updates. The easiest way to search different tags is to use the categories tab located on the sidebar. It takes you to a page with a bunch of different tags. If you click on one of the tags, it gives you all the manga tagged under that category. Some examples of the categories that are relevant to the challenge are as follows: Award-Winning Work, Male Demographic with Female Lead, Female Demographic with Male Lead, the various "Based On" tags, Collection of Stories, various "Child" tags, and various "Adapted from" tags. You can also use the site to find out if a series has been completely translated and what the latest chapter released of an ongoing translation is (available for English Translation only). |

I saw that but I'm wondering if it's like "you can pick up a new ongoing manga and read and it's fine" or if just reading a chapter from something you're following is fine. :c |

According to the Sign-Up thread: "Ongoing manga can be used as long as you’re up to date with the latest released chapter when you turn in your challenge." Additionally, it would probably make sense to stick this thread at the top of the section like the sign-up thread as well. |

I'm here ! I was supposed to go to sleep , and then what do I see ? The challenge is here ! Right now I should be sleeping and here I am writing in the thread at 3 past night . Thank you for ruining my night Tsuyokunaru ( I wasn't able to sleep without signing in anyway , I just had to) . hahaha Well , I'm really happy to be able to start it , but allow me to just point some things that kind of bothered me when I saw the sign up formular (every important forum threads need an annoying frenchy guy that come to complain about something , that's what I believe in , so alow me to be that guy) : I see that now the challenge is official and as such was also officially planned this time . It's good that it can be made into something that is aknowledge and supported.. but I also see that a lot of the item that tsuyokunaru proposed and all of us discussed about (and we really had nice and very interesting share of views over it on the planning thread) where completely erased and dismissed , replaced with other ones that seems to come directly from the previous anime challenge of last year . without going in to much detail , I could think of several items that bother me : - " Read a manhua or manhwa " is now only present as a bonus . This challenge is an opportunity for every reader to experience other things and go in area that they are not usually familiar with , and manhua/manhwa are especially interesting regarding that point , but it is cast aside now . - "Read a Harem, Ecchi, Shoujo Ai or Shounen Ai manga" : the way it's done , it feels as if shoujo ai and shounen ai are categorised as similar to ecchi and harem.. I can't help but find it clumsy and even a little inappropriate . - "Read a manga with an archetype as a main character " : straight out from the anime challenge.. but doesn't seems as appropriate for manga (only my opinion , I know) - "Read a manga with a protagonist that shares your hair color" : ?! ... ok... will be hard for people that don't have black/grey/white hairs... I feel sorry for them (sarcastic joke , I know . I'm not directing it toward anybody but it clearly is a take from the anime challenge that didn't think enought it's subject) just one last thing : what I say are not reproach directed toward you tsuyokunaru , and beside I don't think you were the one to made the list that way but it was according with "MAL administration" . I hope you are fully in charge of the challenge and you are the "boss" though , because you really did fantastic work last year ok , enought for the annoying complains I made (I'm sorry) . Beside I know I'm going to enjoy to do the challenge very much . I look forward to ask for recommendation and discuss about all the things we will be readings . I'll look this thread very frequently I think . And now I go to sleep . I have to be ready to brainstorm all my little reading plans tomorrow and after . ^^ |

"Choose a manga from the predicitve search using a generated random word" Cause I found it to be really interesting and creative (◕‿◕✿) Kineta suggested it and I liked it! @Dullboy I hope you sleep well Dullboy! Don't worry about your comments being too harsh, I really don't mind. My feedback on the challenge items was really considered by the people involved in the planning, so I don't feel like it was unjustly taken away from me or anything. I figured that several of the decisions made by us could make some people dissatisfied, but we wanted to make them as similar as possible and I thought this was the way to go. Also, just because something is not included doesn't mean it's excluded (except for LN, that is mostly excluded). People are definitely encouraged to read manhua or manhwa for any item as long as it fits the criteria they feel. You can read The Gamer for Super Power and it's fine, it doesn't even have to be in the DB. For the grouping of certain tags we went with things that were similar or could give space to the reader to find something they could like. If someone feels extremely uncomfortable with ecchi, shonen ai and shoujo ai, they can still choose harem. I am curious to know why you find that inappropriate because I didn't find it very offensive. This kind of feedback is appreciated because, although we don't plan to change this list now, your comments can be considered if this event continues in the future. There are archetypes in manga too. Many anime are adapted from manga, so they can totally get their archetypes from there. Personally, it seems totally acceptable to me, but we have agreed to disagree before and this is just another instance of it. I respect your opinion even if I don't share it. About the hair color one, I will be honest and say that at first I wasn't entirely convinced, but since manga covers usually feature the main characters in color, it didn't seem like people was going to be guessing what the character's color was. It was just a fun thing to shake the list up a bit and have a more limiting item, even if it seems out of the left field haha. I really appreciate your kind words and I'm glad you're participating against this year even if it isn't entirely to your liking. You give awesome recs, so it's great to have you around! aqualiv said: » Choose a manga from the predicitve search using a generated random word: I got priest LOL So, do any of you know of any manga with priests? hahaha Actually what you're supposed to do is change the drop down from anime to manga on the search bar (next to the top navigator menu on the website). Then you have to write "priest" there in the search word and do not hit enter. Wait a little bit and the list will expand with some titles and you have to choose something from there. It doesn't even need to have the word priest on the title! |

To be honest and speaking strictly personally, I'm sad some challenges like "re-read a manga" or "read a manga by Tezuka" were replaced by something like the TV tropes (I don't even know what it is...) and the generated random word challenges... They sounded like a hassle to me, that I decided to sign up for the medium level and deleted them. Well, whatever. Good luck to everyone for this year too :D |

@Shinster400 I want to rec Eden: It's an Endless World, but it's kind of on the medium-length side. @Kella I took those two out because I personally don't like re-reading (people can still do it for the challenge, really. It's up to them as long as it fits an item) and the Tezuka one was because people who chose that sometimes read manga that was not by Tezuka and wanted to include it and it was a bit of an issue and I also decided it was best not to force authors. @JOAOAA Hmm, well I won't be super strict about it, but you can make a note of how many entries there were when you chose it? Like the name of the magazines and the number of titles in included in DB between parenthesis. |

@FlameWingman21 I think it certainly counts. @Stark700 Well, from the summary I think it should count, yeah. The central topic of the manga is romance, now I guess it should depend if it centers on one couple or not. I won't be too strict about that though. @delija9091 Maybe Hoshi no Samidare? @Brand Just one volume in the series would count. |

@tsuyokunaru Glad to hear that. I'm just afraid there's too little story about her time as a mangaka. I mean that if in the manga, most of the time, telling about her time before she became a mangaka and then ended right after she became one, I don't think it's eligible to use for that challenge. |

Tsuyokunaru about the "Read a Harem, Ecchi, Shoujo Ai or Shounen Ai manga" : tsuyokunaru said: I think I didn't used the good word to say what I had in mind . What I wanted to say is that , even if I know I didn't read that much in the departement (between 15/30 things I guess , so I'm clearly not an expert , I won't argue with that) , I think ecchi and harem are really different and don't recover the same things as shoujo ai and shounen ai . While "shounen/shoujo ai" could be view as a type of romance , and the vast majority of the time is about feelings and how to confess (the fluffy stuff if I might say) , it's really not "sexualised" and when there is sex it is always completely off sceen and just impliyed or with a skip . On the other hand , Ecchi is about flirting with sexual imply and all the like , it's about "perverted stuff" and "hot topic" . I am curious to know why you find that inappropriate because I didn't find it very offensive. So in the end , to me they really don't recover the same aspect . it would make more sens to have yuri/yaoi/ecchi together... but even like that it wouldn't be satisfacting and too distinct . that's jut my two cent ^^ delija9091 said: I know it doesn't really fit exactly what you ask for , but please , consider reading Ashita no Joe . @Dullboy Thanks for explaining. I can see why you disagree with those being grouped. @SupremeMuggage I'd say it doesn't count because a game is an adaptation, even if they don't really include all the story. @ExTamplier Novels cannot be included as regular items, since it's a manga challenge. Last year a few people asked about it because they are also included in the manga database but I really don't see them as the same. I decided to include the Light Novel bonus challenge this time around in case someone wanted to give it a shot. |

tsuyokunaru said: Ok, thank you for reply.@ExTamplier Novels cannot be included as regular items, since it's a manga challenge. Last year a few people asked about it because they are also included in the manga database but I really don't see them as the same. I decided to include the Light Novel bonus challenge this time around in case someone wanted to give it a shot. |
