#MALKeionbu best-of compilation (2009 Second-Half)
Brought to you by #MALKeionbu (MyAnimeList Anime Music Club)
http://myanimelist.net/clubs.php?cid=11555

About this compilation: The club's most active members ranked and voted on the top winners of our weekly music taste tests and put together this list just in time for the holidays. Pass it around and share in our giggling underneath your favorite vegetation hanging inside your abode. Burn it on a CD and listen to you as you drive to and fro after the New Years. Whatever.

Track listing and notes: Please see below for track number, track title, the anime it is from, composer/lyricist/vocalist, the theme it was chosen for, and a brief comment. The mp3s are tagged as much as I can, but some info are left out for consistency. Comment fields in the id3 tags contain the original track numbers where the songs are from, where as the track number fields represent the compilation assigned track numbers. Rest of the tags refers to the original release information.

Methodology: See club page and club forum threads for more information to how this list was compiled.

Tech crap: Files are contributed by various members. Extraction and encode methods vary but everything should be stored at 160 kbps CBR or better (most are better). EAC/Lame wasn't available back in 1993 etc. No normalization applied as far as we can tell. If you want better, go buy the freaking thing and rip it yourself. Support the artists etc.

Tsuki no Mayu
Turn A Gundam
Compose: Yoko Kanno
Lyrics: Rin Iogi
Vocal: Aki Okui
Week 15: Majestic
Comments: It is a bit ironic when this song, with all the air of finality when it proceeded to end the epic Gundam franchise (in the creator's eyes, at least), begins this little compilation in a time when the metaseries is in full swing, yet again. Powerful, yet poignant and reflective, Yoko Kanno's stirring music tells a story of the long struggle of living to get to where everything is today, and Aki Okui's vocals bring a message that the struggle of life always continues.

02
The Woods of the Fatherland
V-Gundam
Compose: Akira Senjuu
Week 25: Awakening
Comments: It depicts the early morning beautifully the way it's paced. The warm feelings it offers as sleep lingers and fades into the morning is the kind of morning I'd like to wake up to!

03
SYNCHRONICITY
Appleseed Ex Machina
Compose: Tetsuya Takahashi
Week 1: Action
Comment: The intro pounds you with its intensity and grandeur and there's enough diversity within this piece to hold your attention as it moves from orchestral, electric guitars, and back again to get your adrenaline flowing.

04
Aerobatic Funk
One Outs
Compose: Akihiko Matsumoto
Week 14: Funky/Groovy
Comment: No funky con scheme is complete with a funky con theme, and Aerobatic Funk bumps the well-honored jazz tradition up a notch.

05
Yuusha Ou Tanjou! -Gathering Mythology Ver-
GaoGaiGar
Compose: Kouhei Tanaka
Lyrics: Yoshitomo Kometani
Vocal: Masaaki Endou
Week 26: Badassery
Comment: Every time I listen to this piece, it always reminds me of those super sentai shows that I watched. The action. The willingness to protect Earth from alien invaders. The "never-give-up" spirit. And those make this song quite badass.

06
Bourbon and Rock
Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto ~Natsu no Sora~
Compose: Taketa Takefumi
Week 23: Bourbon And Rock
Comment: A soulful wailing electric guitar moves through a slow rock jam, carrying along with it a bluesy feeling that justifies slamming down a hard drink after a long, hard day.

07
Groovin' Magic
Top wo Nerae 2!
Compose/Lyric: Reiko Ito
Vocal: ROUND TABLE feat. Nino
Week 5: Pop Vocals
Comment: Grooving like it's 1999, ROUND TABLE struts their stuff with sugary sounds and sweet beats.

08
Nagisa~Saka no Shita no Wakare
CLANNAD OST
Compose: Jun Maeda
Week 9: Warmth
Comment: Huddle around a miracle dango family with this piece. Watch snow fall, dreams come true, hearts warmed. The steady, dramatic movements of the piece reminds you of what's important.

09
Warei no Namida
Neon Genesis Evangelion ~Death & Rebirth~
Compose: Shiro Sagisu
Week 19: Despair
Comment: Notable in this piece is the bit of resolution at the end, it seemed to give hope in further parts unknown, yet at the same time present a cliffhanger to those who deem the glass half empty. The Rebuild movies, anyone?

10
Ashitaka Sekki
Princess Mononoke
Compose: Joe Hisaishi
Week 4: Legendary
Comment: Every story has its beginning and through this piece, you get a sense for the epic scope of Ashitaka's adventures. This was my first introduction to Hisaishi, and even after all these years, it remains an unforgettable experience.

11
"Libera Me" From Hell
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Compose: Taku Iwasaki
Lyrics: Tarantura, Traditional
Vocals: Yuri Kasahara, Tarantura
Week 4: Legendary
Comment: Do you hear that? It's the sound of the revolution. A rap that is a "scream from the underground" coupled with a driving instrumental behind it and an operatic solo on top of it gives a forceful message that even deliverance from Hell is possible as long as you continue to fight the power. ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWAH!!!

12
Allegro Cantabile
Nodame Cantabile
Compose/Lyrics/Vocal: SUEMITSU & THE SUEMITH
Week 13: Piano
Comment: The pounding piano plays both percussion at times and melody during others, weaving together with the other sounds. The result is an uplifting piece that almost pierces into the sublime, but nonetheless a perfect, one-shot, cheer-you-up magic trick.

13
Saigo no Mameshiba
Earth Girl Arjuna
Compose: Yoko Kanno
Lyrics/Vocal: Maaya Sakamoto
Week 11: Discovery
Comment: Melding two arrangements of the same melody, this piece combines the wide-eyed Maaya Sakamoto run with a beautiful introduction and a lingeringly sweet outro as a vintage Yoko Kanno alchemy.

14
Call Me Call Me
Cowboy Bebop
Compose: Yoko Kanno
Lyrics: Time Jensen
Vocal: Steve Conte
Week 16: Yoko Kanno
Comment: Pop vocals, tribal sounding instruments, a distinct base, and a voice that lifts the soul into the air alongside the crashing and raising strings. What is this song? It is a movement. It is a journey of the soul from one man to the woman he lost long ago. And it is a journey without an end except for death.

15
Sin From Genesis
Rebuild of Evangelion: 2.0 - You May (Not) Advance
Compose: Shiro Sagisu
Week 17: Danger!!!
Comment: It's the command room, it's dark and flashing red, you know something big is about to happen and you don't know why you are on the edge of your seat. Look out!

16
In Memories "KO・TO・WA・RI"
Rurouni Kenshin Tsuiokuhen
Compose: Taku Iwasaki
Week 2: Love
Comment: One could feel the sadness and melancholy from this piece. Fitting for this tragedic anime OVA.

17
Heroic Age
Heroic Age
Compose: Naoki Sato
Week 4: Legendary
Comment: Naoki Sato's majestic piece is filled with grand sentiments. Starting softly, the piece's crescendo halfway through sets your heart alight and allowing your spirit to roam free to explore all that this beautiful world has to offer.

18
Blue
Cowboy Bebop
Compose: Yoko Kanno
Lyrics: Tim Jensen
Vocal: Mai Yamane
Week 8: Freedom
Comment: Between bursts of aural euphoria released from Yamane's voice, Yoko Kanno threads in an unforgettable melody, regardless if it was married to an unforgettable anime series or not.
